Dave Grohl - Phil Collins

Two drummers who stepped up behind well known frontmen and really forged their own identities.
Phil with Genesis and as a solo artist; Dave with Foo Fighters and side projects like Them Crooked Vultures.

Note: Foo Fighters new record debuted at #1 this week on both the US and UK album charts.

I was thinking of another analogy with Genesis and Nirvana. What would have happened if Kurt was still alive - I think Dave would have likely exerted his sound on the band overtime...Kurt probably wasn't long for this world though even if he didn't kill himself directly... Still if Dave had left, Nirvana probably would have continued and Dave would have done his own thing.

I was never into Nirvana. When I first heard Learn to Fly, I couldn't believe that it came from a guy who had been part of that group. If Cobain had lived, I do think Dave would have left the band eventually. Learn To Fly seemed like a song that finally washed away some of the angst and darkness of the grunge era without having to totally bring a 180° change to the overall sound of that music.

I'm not quite sure what I just said.

Great song. Foos are a pretty solid band overall. Not a band I listen to every day by any means, but they have written some great songs, not the least of which being Learn to Fly.

Debuted at #1 in 12 countries, not bad at all.

And they did it without any exposure from this show.

"It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do fucking Glee...And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his fucking show… fuck that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee."
