not hearing him

That aside, I believe I read somewhere that he attended her LA concert in support recently
"In Journey, all the hit songs we had were based around Steve Perry's vocals."

It seems to me that Tommy says here that it's painful for him to sing - something about a muscle in his neck or perhaps a back/hip problem. I believe Andrew said a while back that it 'hurt' him to sing also. Maybe we were barking up the wrong tree, and it wasn't emotionally painful for him but a physical thing that's not even related to his vocal ability. IDK, just a slightly different perspective based on the comments from these 2 guys.

Any thoughts on this theory? Andrew??? Anyone???

Well, since you asked, I do have my own theory on this, so here goes.

Way back when Steve first joined Journey he was 29, and though the years touring, we have all seen live footage of Journey shows on Youtube with Steve running around and dancing and throwing his head back and forth to the beat of the music.
Now think about doing that for days, months and years on tour with all that wear and tear on a body and maybe health issues that could be inheriated from family members.Yeah sure at 62 he looks great but maybe he has serious pain that makes it hard for him to enjoy singing like he used too. After all, "Uncle Steve isn't a spring chicken any more."
I think I remembering him saying that not too long ago.

Anyway, that's my two cents for today.

Peace.

Yes, I agree with you on this. The hip problem he had was supposed to be a genetic deteriorating condition (IIRC), so it probably wasn't just limited to the one issue. Time has a way of catching up with us.

"[I] didn’t want to be held back by genre boundaries. Like The Doobie Brothers: If 'Takin' It to the Streets' is all you’ve ever heard, you have a distinct impression—but ‘Black Water’ is different. The point is to listen to all of it and come to an understanding based on all the information."
