Old Cowboys

I'm watching The Westerner this evening and have to say that I totally get why my grand dad loved these old films. Seeing the range of Gary Cooper, from satirical undertones in the aforementioned to somberness (High Noon) and switching it to the other side of the Spectrum with The Hanging Tree. Jimmy Stewart, Walter Brennan, even the Duke (The Shootist is one of my favorites) could really ham it up but then, they could turn around and just have you mesmerized. Chuck Connors, James Arness; Just great actors and what I would consider "a man's man" as they say.

I love old westerns. Some of my favorites are : The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Red River, The Magnificent Seven, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, & Winchester 73'. Don't even get me started on spagetti westerns! LOL

The old westerns dvds regularly get a run here too. Some favourites are, as well as the above, Big Country with Gregory Peck, Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart and a little know one Charlton Heston starred in Will Penny, in his book he said its was his favourite movie.

Don't get me wrong...Westerns were fun to watch as a kid with my pops, but the acting literally sucked ass. Those actors had as much range as Derek Jeter with no legs....Ranking just above Soap Actors/Actresses on the talent chain.

And they all had the same plot: Water rights, or oil...or someone nicked a stagecoach...

The women were too demure, the acting sucked, and you were either the worst shot ever from 10ft., or the best shot the world had ever seen while bouncing around on a horse.

Funny you say that because here in the last month or two i've also finally gotten why my dad loved them and still does to this day.I bought him True Grit for christmas last year. Here recently i sat down and watched Rio Bravo and The Alamo for the first time.Last week watched The Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood and it was a pretty good movie.
