Enlighten me, Nat. I'm not in the mood to read verbose articles. Tell me why you think a pregnant woman running is a good thing for the child.

It's amazing that she ran a marathon...more amazing that she was 39 weeks pregnant and more amazing that she then gave birth on the same day she ran a marathon! I've done both and the mere thought of doing them on the same day makes me want to take a nap!

My mom exercised plenty while pregnant with me and my sisters (she was a college athlete, so she's always been very active). But, running a marathon? That really doesn't sound like the best idea to me. That seems way too intense. She could have gotten severely dehydrated, got muscle cramps (a nice charlie horse in the quad or calf plus labor contractions sounds like FUN), gotten a stress fracture, passed out and fell on the hard ground etc. Just sounds like one of those nutjobs who has an unhealthy obsession with exercise to me (and this is coming from someone who hits the gym 7 days a week).
And from what I saw on the ticker, she planned to run the entire thing and only started walking when her contractions started.

Gotta agree with Matt here...Exercising while pregnant is supposed to be a good thing but running a marathon, even for a healthy non-pregnant person is extreme exercise.

A 35 year old man - a young, presumably healthy FIREFIGHTER - died doing this marathon, 500 yeards from the end. Granted, it's not the most common or likely occurance but it does happen, so yeah, while it may be technically speaking "safe" for a pregnant woman (who is otherwise fit and healthy and capable of running/jogging/walking) do do it, it doesn't mean it's the best idea.
Plus, this is really going to get me NO sympathy at all next time I'm too tired to do laundry or take a walk to Starbucks. "Oh suck it up honey, if that woman can run a marathon and give birth the same day..." Thanks a lot lady.![]()

It's not extreme exercise at all. We've evolved into an obese, lazy society. We used to have to run around chasing our food all day long-now we drive up and order it at a window without even getting out of the car.
But I'll just take my Masters Degree in this area and shove it up my ass cuz you guys seem to have all the answers.

Again, another red herring just like the obesity argument. Presumably she needs to travel on public streets and highways to work, go to the doctor for her prenatal checkups, buy the necessities of life like groceries etc. Under no set of facts does she need to run a marathon. I think it's more of a "look at me" attention grab than anything. The point is, she could have exercised in the gym or done something less strenuous than running a marathon.
Let me ask you this. And put aside all of your science, statistics, and experience as a midwife.
INTUITIVELY, if you were her doctor, would you feel comfortable, morally and legally, telling her it's ok to run a marathon at 39 weeks pregnant?
I know if I were her doctor, I'd err on the side of caution there.

Saint John wrote:Here's what a pediatrician with 36 years of practice said about her running the race:
"Are you people familiar with the concept of a stillborn? Babies not infrequently die in utero right at the end of pregnancy, presumably at times from lack of adequate blood flow to the placenta. I think it is highly irresponsible for any physician to recommend such a long and strenuous course of action at 39 weeks, where blood clearly must be diverted from the placenta to her muscles. No one, I repeat, no one could assure her that this was a safe choice."
