With today's economy and people being more educated when it comes to buying vehicles , it IS the buyers market and they will shop you till they find the best deal. Just like you suggest that if they don't buy it someone else will , the customer can also get the deal at another dealership if you don't give them what they want. That's the way it is all over the country. Well minus where you're at of course where customer fight over vehicles with cash in hand and pushing the price up auction style ;)

But I also haven't tried it on an item under a grand, so perhaps those talking about cheaper/lower margin products might be right. But it's worth a try. You ain't buying a couch from your friend. The North Olmsted, Brooklyn and Strongsville Best Buy's are all fairly close to me. And there's the hhgregg right next to the Brooklyn Best Buy.

hhgregg has a guarantee that they price match and beat it by 10% of the difference. So if you DID get yourself a deal at best buy, and can show proof of that to hhgregg, you could try that. Or we have done it the other way around. Go to best buy, get a price, find that same item at hhgregg, get their lower price, and then go back to best buy with that, and try to get Best Buy to match hhgregg's price. I prefer to get things at best buy in the end, because of their great 0% financing with their credit card. We put a tv and stand and paid on it for 18 months interest free. I'm about to pay it off next month. We have found you can haggle to a degree with our best buy here. But sometimes it's just getting them to throw in something else you need with the item discounted. Like a tv stand or maybe wires? Anything extra you get can make you feel like you got SOMETHING. :lol:

We're sort of in an economic cocoon here. We are already 47% ahead of our entire last year's sales. Yes, there are two other dealers within 100 miles, but they are POS's and don't sell much, nor do they ever seem to get allocated much inventory, I suppose, since they don't sell much. You of all people should know that when people get a great, value building presentation, by a knowlegeable sales person, whom they like and trust, price is less of an issue. It's a relationship business. Of, course, you're back of book. :lol: :wink:

One of the Best Buy's that is closest to my house is right across the street from an hhgregg. So it's really easy to tell one of the places that your going across the street to talk to the other.

If all things are even, I would prefer to buy from Best Buy. I could also use my Rewards Zone card there.

Floor models, maybe- if you want to haggle, try going to your small, locally owned electronics store (if you even have one close), and talk to the owner of the business- he/she would probably offer you a deal to get your business.

Dude, this ain't the third world. If you want to haggle you're gonna have to go Crazy Gideon's and barter over last year's models. If you can't afford to pay in full at the moment, then go to WalMart of Kmart and put one on layaway.

My kid works at BestBuy and business is booming. If you don't want to buy something because of the price, there's gonna be someone right behind you who will.

It's not like your spending $3,000 on a 3D 70 inch LED. Just buy something that you have the money in hand for, don't try to jew the associates over a 500 dollar television.

This one example proved it works. The instructor's wife told him she wanted a new washer and dryer - I think it might have been her birthday. Anyway, the guy goes into the store with $900 cash on him seeing what deals he could get. She led him directly to the what she wanted - which was a $1200 top of the line model. Mind you, the negotiation usually winds up having the department manager involved, but after he negotiated with the sales person and the manager, he wound up getting the washer/dryer for $935. You have to follow some guidelines: The deal has to be good for both parties. Don't expect to get a $4000 TV for $1000. Secondly, you have to have the power to "walk away". Next, you HAVE to know everything about that product. You can't expect to get a bargain on a product that you don't know anything about. Lastly, you need to be willing to pay in cash. As the instructor said, there is some emotional attachment to cash. When sales people see you have actually cash in your hand, they will bend over backwards trying to sell you something. Credit cards just don't seem to have that same affect.

Again, it doesn't work everywhere and may not work with every product (as Behshad's example with Apple) but it most certainly works as long as one knows how to negotiate the right way.

I do know a lot about the model that I want.
I will be paying cash.
And I will be willing to walk out of the store without buying, if I'm not happy with the deal.

Should I just ask for a manager as soon as I go in to the store?

I'd start with the associate and when he (likely) tells you he doesn't have the authority to do that, then ask for a manager.

Also, as a general rule, don't walk in there and say "I have X in cash and won't go a dollar over" or couch things in terms of a "final offer." You'll look awfully silly when they come back and, for example (as in Yoda's example above), offer you the TV for $35 more than the cash amount you say constitutes your "final offer." You can still walk if you don't get the number you're looking for. But no one ever takes "final offer" ultimatums seriously.
