Need suggestions: a good home printer

Postby Ehwmatt » Mon Nov 28, 2011 2:15 am

My HP OfficeJet 6500 E709n just broke on me and I really want to get a good, reliable home printer. Seems like many other things, they make 'em all for shit these days. Anyone have any suggestions about a GOOD home printer that will be reliable and ink-efficient?

I'm willing to spend a little more than normal on a non-crap printer... I'd go up to $250.

Wireless print capability is a must, but I'm assuming that's pretty standard on printers these days.

There are soooooo many printers on the market. The best advice I could give you is to head over to Amazon.com and type in "wireless printer". You will then be able to sort printers by those ranked four stars (usually a great starting point) or higher. It's the best site on the internet for real world user reviews, even if you don't plan on buying from them.

I'm doing all that now. Just wondering if anyone here has had a particularly good experience with one. Seems like every printer I've had in the last 7 years or so just breaks within a year or so. This thing just sits on a small table next to my desk, and I only use it to print black and white docs. No colors, no scanning, no excessive opening of the print door etc. No fuckin excuse to break.

I have an HP Photosmart C5540 and haven't a problem with it. It comes with Bluetooth which is really handy, I use that instead of the usual printer cable.

I think I'm leaning towards a monochrome laser printer in the $100-$200 range. I'm tired of crappy inkjet printers. And, what I spend in the short run on a more expensive laser will come out in the wash when I don't buy ink cartridges every month or so.

That's what I was going to say....if you don't need the color print, look at laser printers, you'll save $'s on ink...they have really come down on in price from years ago.

The worst part about color inkjets is that even if you print exclusively black and white, it still wastes the other colors!

I buy my ink from this seller. Great deals on refilled cartridges. They go a long way. My computer and printer doesn't recognize it as a full cartridge, it always tells me to change it because it's not OEM.

I think I bought 5 black and 5 color cartridges for $130 or something.

I have a wireless HP Photosmart as well, model C4780. Built in scanner/copier and software and haven't had any problems with it as well. When it comes to printers, there's deals to be had all over the place. Really just what catch's your eye price-range and what you're willing to pay for additional features and print type.

My old Canon MP210 is still serviceable. Haven't seen the need to upgrade. Wish ink was cheaper though.

I ended up ordering the Brother HL2270DW Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer.

Good reviews across the board on Amazon, Newegg etc and a reasonable price. Cheaper non-OEM toner available too.

27 pages per minute, auto duplexing, etc. Not a bad deal for $90.

Was hoping to pick it up today but it was $150 at OfficeMax. So I opted for Amazon. I'll have it soon enough anyway.
