Bullcrap...As long as they can take care of them, it's no one's business to tell them otherwise. By all accounts, their children are all pretty well adjusted, well-behaved, and educated and they are not taking government assistance to accomplish it. They're a good example of what an American family should be doing to raise their own children.

ScaryGirl makes great points, and I've seen a special on TV describing how young ladies in their movement find mates. They don't really date - they do something called "courting", where they are basically chaperoned and can't even hold hands or kiss until the wedding day.
Also, there is also that whole issue about letting God decide how many kids they'll have. Is a miscarriage his rough way of telling people to stop, and will they even accept that as a sign?
donnaplease wrote:Have you never heard that expression... courting... before this situation? My mom used it often as a synonym for dating. I think it's an older term for the same thing, it's just that the rules were a little (or a lot, depending on the couple) different back in the 40's when she was doing it.

Now I can see if it is Octomom who is expecting the world to pay for her children, but a happy family who can afford it? No, we have to make fun and run them down.

I thought they said it was for God to decide. Now they've lost two, and my prediction is within a few months they'll be eagerly announcing to the press that she's pregnant again. They are obviously addicted to this...artist4perry wrote:Seriously who died and made us the family size police?![]()

First, it's out of concern that they are raising Stepford kids - and that seems to be the case. If this was mainstream practice, especially in Christian circles, that might be different. But their Quiver Full movement is just another odd offshoot of the faith, and it isolates them. The 'celebrity' aspect gives them some social viability, which goes for Octomom, too. Both families pay for their huge families by exploiting the spectacle of them with reality shows, etc. Is that a healthy environment for kids to be raised in, with cameras in front of their faces all the time? If anything, it just helps them become better actors.

And quite pathetic. Most places aren't saying no one can't say 'Chrsitmas'...they just aren't sanctioning it. Like the government not financing(sanctioning) abortions. You can STILL get one, but you must pay for your own.
Christmas has been corporate/commercial for 40 years....according to the constellations that were referenced in The Greatest Fairy Tale never Told, 'Jesus' wasn't born anywhere near December.
In a related story, I can't make fart noises with my hand/armpit anymore - I guess 'god' thought it was time that skill was taken from me....

I was not aware at the time it was a family that had a show. I first think that is bad for any family, I have not seen one who has not been affected by the constant scrutiny of the public. People are cruel and say mean things all the time because it has become the pass time of our nation.
I thought you were just talking about a large family. So you can see what I was saying about it not really mattering to us how large a family is.
I don't watch crap like that because it is crap and it does harm the families involved. But we do these kids no kindness by tearing their family apart like we were speculating on a sports team.
Turn off the show, and let the ratings drop so the family can go back to real reality.

Rip Rokken wrote:Of course, but like you mention, things were different back in the 40's. I think people who force such an out of date lifestyle only set their children up for failure in the real world. They won't be able to relate to anyone outside their tight-knit little sect. And not holding hands or kissing is sexual repression to the extreme. There is NO WAY those boys aren't jacking off somewhere... I don't think the body can handle the build up of reproductive fluids without some kind of regular release.

Rip Rokken wrote:The name of the show is "19 Kids (and Counting)", and just the name seems to be a set-up for popping out more kids. Her last live one was in Children's Hospital for a long time, and they made the cover of a major mag over her statement that they'd consider trying again. It's a sickness.

Way to attempt to turn this into a political discussion...if you are even being remotely serious...I'll just say that there's no need to have that many children...I would question the sanity of a couple that had any more than 5 kids in this day in age..You know the saying don't be greedy? I think that applies here.
