The effect of cold/flu virus on the voice

Any other singers on here feel like having a bitch and a moan about this? Not just singers, anyone want to join me in a wallowing in self pity fest?

Or can offer sympathy to make me feel less fed up?

OK, I haven't had to cancel a gig tonight because we have booked it as a night off after playing Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the same venue. So it was a night off anyway, and our next gig isn't until next Friday - but I began sneezing last night.

I had a nasty taste in the back of my mouth.
I recognise the signs. I don't want to be ill.
So, I gargled with salt water. I used a steam inhaler.
I ate raw garlic. I used a sinus rinse to flush out anything horrid in there before it could take hold.

But today when I wake up, my sinuses etc are bunged up with catarrh.

I can feel the catarrh strangling my vocal cords. If I had a gig tonight, I would have had to cancel it. A few months ago, I caught a similar thing and DID Have to cancel a gig. No gig = no wages = very miserable SusieP.

I NEVER strain my voice. I make sure all songs covered are within my comfort range. I make sure we take breaks and I drink water throughout the day etc.
I make sure I eat fresh vegetables, I go to the gym, I don't eat sugary crap and I hardly eat any dairy products. I have never smoked.
I drink plenty of room temperature water and get plenty of sleep.

I do everything right - because I make my living from my voice. I have to be sensible and take care of it.

But STILL I get clobbered by a cold virus/bug...whatever.
I'm sick of sage tea and manuka honey.

And I feel so fed up that apart from shooting myself, I don't know what else to do.

Anyone else have any comments?

Hi Susie, I am a chronic bronchitis sufferer. Use a product called Mucinex to curb the mucus drainage. It will reduce it and make any coughs you have more productive. It kept me from going into full blown pneumonia this year!

I am sorry your feeling bad. Sorry to say it is always the old stand bys....plenty of rest, lots of fluids, healthy diet, and warm tea and honey. And a hug....definitely a hug needed from me to you!

Not sure we can get these medications in the UK, but thanks for the info.


But the virus/bacteria or whatever it is has already taken hold.

Those sinus rinse kits are good for clearing a blocked nose, but I can still sing with a blocked nose. Might not sound so wonderful but at least I can still sing.

I sinus rinsed as quick as I could, and I thought the raw garlic would kill those nasties before they took hold, but those buggers move fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Susie, sorry to hear you have the crud and that it's affecting your voice. I'm no expert, but I do relate and have come to some general conclusions.

#1... ALL "home remedies" of ANY kind are crap... if they work at all, it's psychosomatic. "The Chinese have relied on this rare herb for over 10,000 years..." don't be fooled - it's because they didn't know any fucking better.

#2... There are no quick fixes for the voice aside from taking steroid injections like you-know-who, and it's only temporary and can cause permanent damage if continued (like you-know-who).

I don't know if this helps at all, but I used to lose my voice completely every single year due to illness, and it would often take a few months, maybe 2 or 3, to get my full range back again. That sucked harder than you can imagine. What I found was that it was apparently caused more by allergies than a cold or flu, and intense allergies definitely present with flu-like symptoms. Made sense that I was confusing the two, as I've had several colds and flus that didn't take a lick off my range, even if my throat was very sore. I started taking Lortadine (Claritin) as needed when I felt a little sniffly, and haven't lost my voice completely since - it's been about 5 years now.

Its also even more expensive here than the others recommended by Ginger and Nora. I'm wondering if I can get it on prescription from my Doctor. With our NHS system, prescription meds are a set price - so I could probably get some cheaper.
But it seems to have enabled you to keep your voice.

Looking at Ginger's recommendation, that seems more suitable for coughs. I don't tend to get coughs - the cold [or allergy] seems to get to my voice. So maybe this isn't the one for me. I don't know. And could it be allergies and not a cold/flu, like it was for Rip?

I want to try and make sure my voice is always there so that I can work.

It's tricky to know which might work best isn't it?

I'm so fed up because you would think my immune system would be strong enough to fight colds because I eat healthy, exercise, don't smoke etc - and yet, I keep getting colds. Ive had 3 this winter. So I am - after Rips comments - thinking it may well be allergy related rather than a cold.

I know that even healthy people get at least two colds a year, and I can live with a blocked nose and a cough because I can still sing through that - but because Rip said his colds made him lose his voice and the Claritin prevented that, obviously that's the first recommendation I will try.

Well I hope it works. I have battled my allergies a great deal more than I want as of late. I also deal with them getting so bad it turns into walking pneumonia. I have so much drainage I feel I am drowning. I loose my voice on occasion, but mostly just an irritation of the throat. I don't cough until it gets really bad.

Anything you can do that will help you feel better do. Rip seems to be on the right track I think.

A couple of quick notes if you want to try the Claritin route - the brand name is about 5x as expensive, so I just get the generic Lortadine 10mg tabs, which cost me anywhere from $2-$3 U.S. for a pack of 10. I hope it's not too outrageous in the U.K.

Just to clarify, I believe now that losing my voice was never a result of any cold or flu, because even with a sore throat or all the stuff that goes along with colds/flus, there have been too many times that it didn't affect my voice much if at all. But I do have seasonal allergies, and the symptoms are very nearly identical in me -- a little fever, sore throat, achy body, all the sinus stuff, etc, and if I don't address it immediately it tends to become a secondary respiratory infection. In past years, what would happen is my voice would start to go out very quick, and within a few days I had laryngitis - couldn't even speak. Speaking voice would start to come back within a few days, but in the worst cases my singing voice may not fully recover for a few months. Taking 1 Lortadine tab at the first spot of trouble seems to have eradicated that issue, and I haven't lost my voice like that in several years - at least 5, maybe 6.

I was a little direct in my complaints about home remedies last night, lol - I think that comes from my frustration with those types of voice issues, but in my case at least, there have been no magic cures once it goes out - at that point, it just takes time. Hitting it hard and quick at the first sign of trouble, even if it's just getting the sniffles or coughing up less than clear mucous in the morning seems to keep me going.

Last year I started (after I got sick). So far, so good and my wife has been super sick
since New Year's Eve with a bad cold and I've been lucky enough to not get it. That's

It was really the day after the last gig that my voice wasn't really normal.

Have stayed silent, inhaled steam, gargled with salt water [and cider apple vinegar/honey which I have every day] - and woke up this morning feeling good.

I'm just still a little bunged up.

I have some Claritin now. Arrived today.
My Doctor's can't get Theraflu. Seems to be a strictly American thing.

I've emailed Amazon to ask about them stocking the Theraflu range over here.
If they can't do that, I'll buy the only one that's available on the amazon UK site, which is the chest one.

I only usually do a max of 3 a week but it was Chinese New Year and a big venue in Nottingham booked us for their whole celebration period.
And my voice only went a wee bit croaky on the last song of the last night.

I had catarrh the day before and sang a bit nasally but the voice was all there until that next night and the last song.

So maybe all the stuff I do did make sure my cords/larynx were clear from the cold bug and maybe my voice was just plain TIRED? And maybe it wasn't laryngitis this time?

I got Lortadine 10mg without the Brand name of Claritin. Not expensive at all.

So, you take one a day as soon as you feel the warning signs?

Susie, I think my allergy problem is three fold. Smoke from anything burning (the farmers here love to burn fields people burn leaves, cigarette smoke, etc), Mold (The trailer I work in for the elementary school is riddled with it!), and pollen (I live in Arkansas, things bloom half the year here ).

It pays to look into what your allergic to. Sometimes you learn yourself what triggers your allergies. In my case it is useless because it is year round wherever I go!

I am going to be singing at a charity event sometime this year and hope and pray it does not hit me hard like it did the last time I sang! I sang with near strep like throat conditions! ARGH! Indeed. Everyone said I did great, but I knew it was NOT my best.

Mucinex helped a bit with the chest. Stay away from the DM as it'll make you spacey. Theraflu also has been effective for me when not feeling well. Tastes horrible, but seems to calm some of the issues. Mostly, it just made me feel better. Haven't tried Claratin. I've been using Zyrtec off and on this year and that's been sometimes helpful and sometimes I couldn't tell

I got Lortadine 10mg without the Brand name of Claritin. Not expensive at all.

So, you take one a day as soon as you feel the warning signs?

Yes, 1 per day is supposed to last 24 hours. I take it at the first hint of trouble. Anyway, if your issue does turn out to be allergy-related, hopefully this should help.
