A hug is welcome.
I'm pretty healthy really. It's just that whenever a cold bug strikes it seems to go straight to my throat.
I haven't got a cough.
It's one of those colds where the catarrh drips onto the back of the throat.
I'm hoping the salt water gargling will stop it dropping down onto my larynx.
Because if it turns to laryngitis, it could take several days to clear.
I'm being silent today to try and prevent that happening.
I do feel fed up, but I am just so glad my voice was ok for the gigs we had booked last week.
I would have rested my voice well today after that many gigs anyway, but I could do without the threat of this looming over my vocal cords.

Think I'll stick to the salt water gargle, sage tea and manuka honey.
Although manuka honey costs a fortune, too.
However, if I have any more honey tea and salt gargle I think I'll throw up.

Rip Rokken wrote:Susie, sorry to hear you have the crud and that it's affecting your voice. I'm no expert, but I do relate and have come to some general conclusions.
#1... ALL "home remedies" of ANY kind are crap... if they work at all, it's psychosomatic. "The Chinese have relied on this rare herb for over 10,000 years..." don't be fooled - it's because they didn't know any fucking better.
#2... There are no quick fixes for the voice aside from taking steroid injections like you-know-who, and it's only temporary and can cause permanent damage if continued (like you-know-who).
I don't know if this helps at all, but I used to lose my voice completely every single year due to illness, and it would often take a few months, maybe 2 or 3, to get my full range back again. That sucked harder than you can imagine. What I found was that it was apparently caused more by allergies than a cold or flu, and intense allergies definitely present with flu-like symptoms. Made sense that I was confusing the two, as I've had several colds and flus that didn't take a lick off my range, even if my throat was very sore. I started taking Lortadine (Claritin) as needed when I felt a little sniffly, and haven't lost my voice completely since - it's been about 5 years now.

It DOES work, that's why. What, I guess aside from toothpaste, UK stores don't carry deodorant? Not surprising. I mean after all, you guys want the body odor to match your breath odor right?Think I'll stick to the salt water gargle, sage tea and manuka honey.
I have an idea of doing "something" with, for your old man that contains excercise, fun, and also salt; in particular, dick snot, which contains 100% pure salt from the good Lord himself. Yep, from what I have heard, a pre-show blow job works. How do I know this? Nora told me.
SusieP wrote:Grrr the only Theraflu I can seem to get here is the chest congestion one.
No others seem to be available, at any price.
I have found some Claritin though - 10mg tablets.
And I have ordered them.
I will see if I can get Theraflu from my Doctor.
Thanks all.

Theraflu is good. The Mucinex, even though it says for coughs, works to reduce mucus. And since most of my problems are also allergy related, it affects my sinus something fierce. My doc is the one who said Mucinex. I can understand if you don't think it will help you. I only suggested what helps me. Now it might not be what you need at all. Maybe ask your doc what would be most suited for your problem? And I am with Rip, it could be more allergy than anything else. I unfortunately have problems because a lot of allergy medicines are No-No's for people with high blood pressure. It reduces what I can take.
I wish you good luck and I hope your feeling back in tune again soon!![]()

SusieP wrote:I'm so fed up because you would think my immune system would be strong enough to fight colds because I eat healthy, exercise, don't smoke etc - and yet, I keep getting colds. Ive had 3 this winter. So I am - after Rips comments - thinking it may well be allergy related rather than a cold.
I know that even healthy people get at least two colds a year, and I can live with a blocked nose and a cough because I can still sing through that - but because Rip said his colds made him lose his voice and the Claritin prevented that, obviously that's the first recommendation I will try.

The benefits of ACV are a hoax. Except for the benefits to the sellers - those cannot be denied. Hate to say this because Stallone also promotes ACV and the acidic/alkaline model of health, but it's nonsense. Rambo needs to stick to killing people, not trying to heal them.

brywool wrote:Hey Susie- I was you last year, but with Bronchitus.
I had it twice. Had to cancel a gig, should've cancelled more than one.
Took a long time to get my voice back.
Steroids if taken in pill form and not ALL THE TIME won't hurt you.
And will help bring the swelling down in your chords.
Water. Water. Water.
Silence. Silence. Silence.
Steam.
Keep it out of your chest if you can.
I read last year that if you take Choral Calcium each day, it can keep you from getting that stuff.
Last year I started (after I got sick). So far, so good and my wife has been super sick
since New Year's Eve with a bad cold and I've been lucky enough to not get it. That's
been a number of weeks and normally, I get that stuff so easy.
That is the only thing I'm doing differently, so it seems to explain my luck so far.
I also juice with ginger, celery, carrots, apples on gig days.
I'm still having issues, but it seems to be allergy/reflux related as opposed to flu/cold.
Good luck. It's only a gig. Take some time off.

Oh For Fucks Sake, PM me your poste address and I'll ship some Theraflu of your choice...a couple bottles. Hell, I'll throw in some vicodin too. That shit works for any illness; from depression, to broken bones, to hangovers...anything. TRUST ME.

Just passing on what works for me with zero side effects.
It beats taking strong medication that have many side effects while lining the pharmaceutical companies with cash.

Choral Calcium?
That's a new one on me. Will google it. Thanks.
What are your thoughts on the Mucinex, Theraflu and Claritin ideas Bry?
SusieP wrote:My voice is back. Haven't tried to sing - don't need to until Friday. So will wait until nearer the time to see what I have. But I'm talking fine.
It was really the day after the last gig that my voice wasn't really normal.
Have stayed silent, inhaled steam, gargled with salt water [and cider apple vinegar/honey which I have every day] - and woke up this morning feeling good.
I'm just still a little bunged up.
I have some Claritin now. Arrived today.
My Doctor's can't get Theraflu. Seems to be a strictly American thing.
I've emailed Amazon to ask about them stocking the Theraflu range over here.
If they can't do that, I'll buy the only one that's available on the amazon UK site, which is the chest one.
You know, I did sing 8 nights in a row last week
I only usually do a max of 3 a week but it was Chinese New Year and a big venue in Nottingham booked us for their whole celebration period.
And my voice only went a wee bit croaky on the last song of the last night.
I had catarrh the day before and sang a bit nasally but the voice was all there until that next night and the last song.
So maybe all the stuff I do did make sure my cords/larynx were clear from the cold bug and maybe my voice was just plain TIRED? And maybe it wasn't laryngitis this time?
SusieP wrote:Rip,
thanks again. I checked after I read your info and saw that Claritin brand is available here without prescription and that it comes in 5mg and 10mg.
I got Lortadine 10mg without the Brand name of Claritin. Not expensive at all.
So, you take one a day as soon as you feel the warning signs?
I'm looking into the other products.
But after your comments about allergies, and Ginger's and now Bry's, I'm thinking maybe I should get my Doc to run some allergy tests.
