Video and Song - Undertow vs. Tattoo

Postby Deb » Thu Mar 01, 2012 1:40 pm

Just curious what the poll would show, although I'm pretty sure I know already. But............ Van Halen's Tattoo or Mr Big's Undertow which song and/or video do you like better and why. Bare in mind, one is raw/live and one is produced/overdubbed to the max. Of course you know which gets my vote. Saying that, I love the musicality to the VH song, always loved that VH drum/guitar sound, but I just can't stomach Dave's vocals and antics anymore. And the two syllable Ta-ttoo Ta-ttoo chorus drives me nuts.

Just got me thinking when I saw this comment under MB's Undertow vid. "After watching the new Van Halen video, I wanted to listen to this. THIS is how you do a comeback song!"

Yep, Undertow hands down. Sorry, I haven't watched the Tattoo vid you posted and
I do, very much, like ADKOT ...Tattoo just isn't my fav. Although, I don't hate it.
I do love Undertow and the entire cd on which it resides.

Now, DLR is not my favorite vocalist, but it was Ed's guitar and the "show" that
made me love this band, much like KISS.
I watched a utubey of VH's Jump live from '84 and one from this current
tour, and seriously there's not much difference in the vox ...however,
the jumps have changed a skosh!! Ed, on the other hand, is playing like
it's 1984.

Undertow by a mile. Tattoo sounds too generic for my taste and the lyrics don't really make sense either.

I'm quite surprised actually. :o I thought for sure this would go the other way, if even just for the VH name. Great to see the Big boys gettin' some love here. :D

Undertow. Gilbert is on par with EVH in my opinion, but Eric Martin outright slays DLR.
The song is played just as well, sang much better, and is simply catchier.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

I can't disagree with a single word of that. :) It's always a thrill to see EM sing live whenever I get the chance, but have to say one of the highlights for me too was seeing PG's Undertow solo performed a few feet in front of me (twice!). It's not his most technical, but I loooove his crunchy guitar work in that song.

I really liked the Mr. Big reunion album, but it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. Needs to be remastered.

Yeah, I wonder if they will go with Kevin Shirley again on the next one? I go back and forth on my thoughts on that issue. I would be curious to have heard what it would sound like all polished, but then I'really like the raw/live sound, and can't stand anything too polished and overproduced. Not a single overdub on the What If... cd. I'm with Dave Grohl on that issue. Totally agreed with what he said when he accepted his Grammy. I love that MB can sound even better than their album when you see them live, compared to so many bands that need that studio help and just can't cut it live anymore.

Undertow is far better. I don't think Tattoo was a good choice for a single, but the album rocks, though. Blood and Fire is my favorite.
