How can anyone's answer to this not have the name Steve Perry. Arrival was good. Red and Gen pretty lackluster. WAFTE was good too. Escape and Frontiers are 2 of the best melodic rock albums ever. Personally, I prefer Escape.
Augeri's voice flamed out quickly. They should have went with Chalfant. SA sounds good on the recordings.

Arrival is such a diverse, interesting album. Barely any filler. Escape is about 50% filler.

Probably the best post Perry album.
Rolie-Perry era +1

Plenty of filler. Arrival is too ballad heavy. NCC, WWMA, and at least another I can't think of. Escape is hardly 50% filler. LID, WDOA, KOR. That's it. Most of the rest are classics and some of the best material Journey ever wrote. Not one song on Arrival is strong as what is left after the 3 filler tracks I just wrote. More importantly, Escape and Frontiers sounded original at the time. Arrival sounds like Journey trying to be Journey. I know it doesn't sound like it but I like Arrival. It just isn't on the same level musically as Escape or Frontiers- with or without filler.

It is very surprising to me the love so many people on this forum have for the Augeri era. Yeah, Arrival was good, but it gradually went down hill from there, before hitting an embarrassing bottom.
