No...not if they are in a 3 bill rock-n-roll show. Even though the Faithfully one is short...still.

(And that's taking nothing away from Cain's beautiful playing either.)

Good stuff! Not sure why but, I've always liked the version of Anytime from Captured the best. The double-time portion at the end of the song is just really good. And, the band is just so freakin' tight which provided for really, really crisp.... well..... everything!

Blame it on pussy fans. Blame it on Journey too, for not promoting new tunes properly.

I'm sure they'd include Eclipse songs if they thought people wanted to hear em..

Bingo no one wants to hear them because they suck.

Classic rock radio ruins everything. Def Leppard dropped All About Believin' a few weeks back because of ignorant dipshits, so I didn't get to hear that at the show last week. I'm seeing Journey this October and they won't be doing the shit I want to hear. People are fucking retards I mean seriously.

Outstanding that you didn't generalize your statement and commend you on your detailed post. ANY reader would have no trouble whatsoever understanding what the fuck you meant anywhere in your post. Kudos and welcome to the forum!

Journey can get away with this if they'd quit advertising to the audience that song X is from new album Y. They rolled right into Never Walk Away from Any Way You Want It last night seamlessly, no introduction, and everyone stayed on their feet. They didn't know the words, but I saw plenty of people singing along to the chorus when they had it figured out. It seemed like they were under the impression it was a Perry classic that they weren't familiar with: same for La Do Da and Anytime.

Hey Gid, I think the phrase for that exact situation is, "Never let the left hand know what the right hand's doing." I know what you mean though. Announcing that what they are about to hear is "new" is basically saying it's "foreign" to them and the apprehensive and nervous synapses kick in and they become disoriented and confused about what to do.

Correct. They should know by now that people are close minded and should adjust their behavior accordingly; when in doubt, deceive.

Yeah, I think they wanted COH to be seen as a sequel to DSB and ended up driving the whole damn album off a cliff in the process.

As much as it pains me to say this, at least a third of the crowd in Louisville were on their asses during the Cain solo before Open Arms. But they raised the roof when he whipped out the harmonica.

I really don't consider them to both be solos. The one right before Faithfully is more of a intro/interlude and the one before OA is close to a solo but still not a full-on "solo" per se.
Now THESE are keyboard solos....
Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) No one currently playing who is better in my opinion as a keyboardist/pianist for over 40 years.

And, of course, the one and only Rick Wakeman. Wow, just wow.... It really gets fun at about 2:38 8)

Review:
Third row, Neal's side, best seats I've ever had. Got plenty of eye contact from Neal, especially during NWA, since I was probably the only one there who knew the words; Ashley got a pick and my father got a high-five from Arnel. Arnel was on fire, on par with his 2008 performance. I'm glad they changed up the setlist and I enjoyed hearing "Anytime", but I was irritated that none of my wishlist was granted and there weren't any songs played from Eclipse. Definitely a great show all around, but I wish they'd get their balls back.

Dontcha just love the way Neal flings his picks?!  I was front row, center for the Generations tour show here in PHX with a bunch of friends from the old Journey BackTalk forum and my buddy, JourneyDean and I were directly in front of Neal at one point and he flings a pick which hit JourneyDean square in the forehead and actually cut a tiny slit in his skin - not deep enough to leave a scar but it bled nonetheless! Unbelievably, he actually found it on the ground after it ricocheted of his head and the stage monitor before finding its way to the floor.
Regarding the high-five from AP....
The first time I met him, was after we had been introduced via an online chat via a mutual friend who was also one of his hosts here in the states shortly after he semi-moved here. I was doing a series of feature articles about him and his road to stardom. We had chatted off and on for the better part of a year before we finally met and even though I had watched countless videos of him, I hadn't realized how little he actually is. In contrast, I'm a fairly hefty guy - 6'0" 240 lbs - which is a giant in his world. When they band rolled into PHX his first time, I got to the venue a little earlier than the time we were scheduled to get together. When I got backstage to where he was, he was hanging out with some of his Pinoy friends just chillin'. I walked up behind him and said, "Hey Dude, I'm JRNYMAN!" and put my hand out to shake his when he turned around. As he turned, it dawned on me just how small a pkg. 5'3" and 120 lbs. actually is. When got turned around far enough to get a look at me, I could see the shock in his eyes and I swear he did a quick glance left and right to see how far away the closest security guy was.  As we shook hands, his disappeared in mine and I actually said (and regret it to this day...) "I didn't realize you were so small!" DOH!!! What a fucking dumb thing to say! He was cool about it and laughed and shot right back at me with, "I didn't realize you were so...... BIG!" and it was clear he meant "FAT". I deserved it and it actually kinda served as an ice breaker for our first face-to-face. I'll admit, the tats actually do make his upper body look bigger than he did before he got them.

Agreed. I recently moved from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Naperville, Illinois. There is a CR station here that recently changed format/programing. Before the change and my move it was rare that I'd hear any of the "Dirty Six" as I call them from any band. For example QUEEN. I would hear, WATC and WWRY once out of every 6 Queen songs. LED ZEPPELIN: Before the move I have never heard STH on at all, but since the change I've heard it every day. Same with Journey, I never heard LTS/COTA before the move, now it's at least once every day.

That's why bands like the Grateful Dead never had that problem, radio never played them. Save for "Touch Of Grey" and maybe "Hell In A Bucket" at least I never heard them in the Detroit area.

Another example: Blue Öyster Cult. There is a new boxed set coming out "The Complete Columbia Albums Collection" on one site 90% of the comments where in regards to why a boxed set for a band with just 3, 4 songs. Blame it on CR radio.

Just my two cents.
Oww. My aching tentacles.

The thing is, at least where I live, is that there aren't any DJs. They just get greatest hits packages and put 'em on shuffle, because apparently it guarantees listeners. Album tracks and new singles are too risky I guess. It is so bad here that every "Twofer Tuesday", whenever they do Bryan Adams, it is ALWAYS Cuts Like A Knife and Summer Of '69. NEVER ANYTHING ELSE. I suppose playing Don't Stop Believin', Stairway To Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, and You Give Love A Bad Name at least once a day is what people want to hear. Lets ruin the power of songs yay cool way to go radio.

Throwing out the festivals which are money losers anyway,
2008 52 shows - 31 sellouts
2011 71 shows - 17 sellouts
2008 35 million
2011 38 million
2011 gave them an 8% increase in profit but they had to increase their performances by 26% to reach that. Was the monetary gain equal to the wear and tear of adding those additional shows?

Certainly relative to 2008 your argument is a good one. I just don't think 2011's was unsuccessful by any stretch.

Implying that a quality product is directly proportionate to its commercial success is silly. Suggesting that post-Perry Journey songs don't do well because none of them approach the quality of a Perry-led Journey is a dubious statement to make, let alone the idea that none of them are good period. A lot of it has to do with fluctuating musical climates and trends, in addition to the reluctance of fans accepting music that isn't on the greatest hits package. At Louisville and other concerts, I saw plenty of songs played that left the majority in attendance silent or scratching their heads (if they were on their feet at all) that came from the Perry era.

To the average fan, it has little to do with Perry vs. Pineda. They'd give the same amount of fucks about "Winds of March" and "La Do Da" as they would "Higher Place" or "City of Hope." It's about what they heard on the radio and they're collectively uninterested in little else.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
