Need dance-songs from YOU!!!

Postby G.I.Jim » Thu Sep 12, 2013 8:36 am

Hey everyone! The band is on hiatus for a few months while we re-tool our set-list and record a promo package. We play a HUGE variety of music and I need some song ideas from you that would make you ladies get up and dance! I appreciate any help you can give me here. :D

Do you do stuff like Prince's 1999?

The Gap Band did You dropped a bomb on me. I think that was a fairly popular dance song. 1980's and 90's, right?

Good stuff so far people! Keep em coming!! And I'm not looking for "melodic", I'm looking for "get your ass on the dance floor" songs. Any genre except (c) rap and jazz.

Lots of factors here at play such as age of crowd, type of music crowd likes, place where your doing this.etc.

Speeking for me personally, I'd be out on the dance floor with the hot chicks in a heart beat dancing to songs such as:

Paula Abdul - Straight Up
En Vogue - Free Your Mind
Naughty By Nature - O.P.P
Bobby Brown - Humpin Around
Janet Jackson - That's The Way Love Goes

Again, depends on the crowd. This was the dance crowd I associate with.

We play to a pretty wide variety crowd-wise. These are some great picks, and I'm sure we could do some of these! We already do "Black Cat" from Janet.

Come on people, why hasn't anyone mentioned K.C. and the Sunshine Band? You want people to dance?

Spin:

That's the Way I like it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM7zRfHG0no

Shake Shake Shake - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3fZuW-aJsg

and it's a guarantee you'll have people dancing.

A couple more I thought of...

Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love

Warrant - Cherry Pie

Tubes - Talk to ya Later & She's a Beauty

MJ - Beat It

Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music

You did say there was a female singer in the band didn't you? If so...
Katrina & The waves - Walkin on Sunshine

Go Go's - We got the Beat

C&C Music Factory - Everybody dance Now

Pat Benatar - Heartbreaker

I misunderstood the original post. I was under the impression that while the band was on hiatus, you were going to play pre-recorded dance music - dj work in the meantime.

So what type of band do you have? Is it an electronic band where all the instruments are programmed or one with actual drummer, bassist, guitarist, etc.? I'd say if your an electronic band and you can program the music exact or if your actual band you have can play this music and the chick you have singing is good, pulling off KC and the Sunshine band tunes wouldn't be too difficult, plus a hot chick that can sing well is always a good thing.

Steve... just because they have the word "dance" in the title... that doesn't make them dance songs! Lol!! They are some great tunes though, and there's some winners in there for sure.

More great ideas! We do addicted to love. I used to play "She's A Beauty" and even recorded a demo with an old band. I'll have to upload it sometime. When we played it live, we got the deer in the headlight looks. Lol!! Some songs just don't go over in a bar. I love the song though! :D

Yeah, I did kinda notice a pattern starting there.... Funny thing is, I wasn't consciously or purposely trying to think of songs that had it in the title... they just sort of came to me. Now, in my own defense, there are a fair amount of dance songs that do have the word in the title.
And of course the mother of all dance songs with "dance" in the title is almost impossible to cover - Dancing Queen. I've only ever heard it covered live one time many years ago where the band actually nailed it!
It's kinda one of those songs that it's better just to leave it alone because if you do cover it and it's not absolutely perfect, the audience will take offense that you even dared to walk on such hallowed ground.
The only cover of the song to my knowledge that's ever been recorded and actually gives the original a run for its money is S Club 7's version of it - and they flat out NAIL it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOUf72fHi4g
They're obviously lipping it in this video which is from an episode of their TV show but it really is the kids singing it. It's uncanny how much the blond girl looks like Agnetha here!

That one falls under the umbrella of, "you either GET The Tubes, or you don't!"

Was at a Karaoke bar one night and a guy did "No Diggity." Dance floor was packed. I guarantee the Montell Jordan song has the same effect (I'm a former DJ and have seen it with my own eyes). I'll give you two more I'm sure you'll poo-poo, but they'll pack the floor. Nothing stopping you from taking the shell of the song and reworking it for your band and style, though. A friend's band used to play everything from Hendrix to Rage Against the Machine to Outkast to Metallica. They did the second song below (in their own style) and it always went over extremely well. Everything I'm giving you were huge songs on Top 40 radio, so I'm confident you're not going to alienate the audience. To quote Pacino, "Hah! Are you listenin' to me, son? I'm givin' ya pearls here."
