Favorite Lukather ballad?

"These Chain" to me is genius. Doesn't get enough love.

Mine is “The Road Goes On,” without question. Lyrics, music, the guitar solo, the whole package. I never get tired of hearing it. A close second is “Simple Life.” I enjoy the obvious favorites (“I’ll Be Over You,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,”) but these are my picks.

As a drummer, I totally DIG this tune.....but not my fav Luke ballads, unfortunately.

Best Luke ballad for me, would be without doubt I Won't Hold You Back. The lyrics ain't exactly classic...haha. But the tune is just beautiful.

Beyond the standards - if I can pop outside of Toto for a moment - I've always found "The Letting Go" haunting. Would have loved to hear a 'younger' Luke belt that out without all of the road-worn weariness in his voice.

Inside Toto - aside from the aforementioned, I really like Anna.

Speaking of Luke ballads - interesting to have Joe on this one:

Nice take.

But Angela's not really a Luke ballad, though.....its one of those cool Toto songs where it seamlessly blends 3 vocalists into a nice little piece.

Bobby does the verses, Luke does the Angela parts....and Dave does the strange situation part....haha.

Luke's Ever Changing Times has a few tracks that would've fit right at home in TOTO. Letting Go is one of them.

That's definitely Luke on the verses, not Bobby.

"The Road Goes On" for me, I think. Maybe "Melanie" a close second.

Love Melanie - recently went back to that album - I can't seem to find any real live performances of the song though - a few lip sync television special versions, but that's it.

BTW - in case anyone missed it - Luke thinks the live DVD they recorded last night should be out by Christmas this year!

The footage online shows the band firing on all cylinders. Vocally, Luke and Joe definitely ate their Wheaties. Their past 2 DVD/CD live releases (FIB and Poland) i lent out to friends. Never got them back. This one I'm keeping for myself.

I think it was dropped pretty quickly after the Mindfields tour started, unfortunately. Although maybe the song just didn't click live, which I could easily understand. Great song though.

No shit! Joe is absolutely belting those notes. And Luke's voice actually seemed a little smoother, although hard to tell too much from these phone videos. Several parts that they had been leaving out (or letting Shem sing) are back full force. They're probably smart enough to save their voices knowing the filming was coming up - but DAMN. Excited to see this one come out.

Time to stop loaning those out TNC...

Well, no, it's definitely not him. It's clearly Luke (a young Luke, before his voice acquired the raspiness it has today). I mean no disrespect, but I honestly don't understand how anyone familiar with their voices could think otherwise.

On the studio version of Angela, I only hear Luke and Dave.

That's what I hear. Here's Luke singing it back in '92:

Also, the liner notes clearly say "Lead vocal - Steve L."

I guess it was flattering at the time...now I am a cancer carnage victim but glad to be alive!

Simple Life. One of these days I’m gonna double it up in ProTools and make the version I hear in my head. It’s too short!

Absolutely agree. That song is a perfect example of Toto capturing a feel and delivering. Another Luke ballad that does this is "Just Can't Get to You." I would probably place JCGTY over These Chains only because the song sounds more of a solo song.
