Concert setlists from 2011 (8 years ago) actually featured new material.
Monker wrote:I told you they were at this point a very long time ago...and you insisted that Journey would have an album out before Styx. Well, "The Mission" came out and there should another Styx album out next year....and a DeYoung album.
The evidence of Journey just going through the motions has been there a very, very long time.

The Mission was only Styx's second album of original material since replacing DDY. Journey has done four albums + an EP since SP was replaced. At one point, it looked like Styx may never record new material. Styx has openly acknowledged the failure of Cyclorama and has only recently embraced the idea of creating more albums.
As Shaw said "We’re working on music for a new album. We went for 14 years without creating a new album because we didn’t think there was a place for it."
Once again, you are just engaging in dishonest revisionist history. But what else is new?

The people coming to see Journey in Vegas will be tourists, not fans. They're the same people who will see Celine the night before, and Wayne Newton the night after. For such an audience, I'm sure Journey is inclined - if not directed - to play the hits, and nothing but the hits. Def Leppard just finished its residency and with perhaps one or two exceptions, they played their own dirty dozen. Go look at the set list. By all accounts, that residency was considered a big hit.

Respectfully, that is not what Def Lep did during their recent residency.
Did they play their "Dirty Dozen" in the later third of the show? Absolutely! But, prior to that they played some songs that made the die-hards lose their minds; notably some songs that they hadn't played in decades...if ever! Plus, when you consider that they added a significant acoustic set to the middle of the show (like they've only done on one tour before) & the fact that they changed the early part of the show nightly, I find it, once again, respectfully, inaccurate to say they did what Journey is likely to do.

Monker wrote:Oh, please, you went on a triggered rampage in June of 2016 about why Journey would release a new album, and that Styx is still waiting. You were wrong. Period.
Monker wrote:As for Styx, "it looked like Styx may never record new material". That is NOT TRUE, and is frankly either a rabid display of ignorance on your part, or a blatant lie.
Monker wrote:In the few years prior to "The Mission" being released, Gowan had gone on several interviews saying they were working on a new album. In fact, just prior to your 2016 rampage, there was more news about it. So, yes, there was always hope that Styx would record a new album, and was doing so. It was becoming a bit frustrating waiting for it, but it was there - if you were paying attention...in fact, I said something like "yeah, when Steve Perry records a new album with Journey", or whatever. But, the HOPE was always there.
Monker wrote:It is also untrue that there was NO new material. JY is on record in several interviews where he stated that the era of albums was over and it was a singles market now...and that is what they were trying to address. The CYO concert not only had "Walrus" but also, "Just Be", "Everything All the Time", and on the DVD the Christmas songs, "Ring the Bells" and "All I Want" (not covers, new songs). In addition, with their live CD they were releasing new songs for each CD. So, to say they were not recording new material is a flat out fallacy.
Monker wrote:This also addresses Tommy's comment. Yes, they were taking the approach of not releasing an album. However, Tommy brought in the idea for "The Mission". They recorded and released it and it was well received. So they changed their approach to new music. It is that simple. Styx is a band where all the members get along and accommodate each other. There is no obvious conflict or ego clashing, etc. They do what they want to do.
Monker wrote:On the other hand, Journey is a train wreck...and has been for years, decades really. Their is a HUGE divide between what Cain wants and what Schon wants. Schon going on Twitter assaults and starting rival versions of the band doesn't help any. ANYBODY with any common sense should be able to look at the unstable situation in Journey and KNOW there is little hope for any artistic output.
Monker wrote:Who is doing better with new music, or how prolific they are, is not my point. My point was, and is, that Styx finds ways of being creative. Journey hasn't...not since the release of Eclipse.
