Hey, now. The man is in his 70's. He's gotta get in wherever he can fit in at this point. Christmas albums and old standards is right in his wheelhouse right about now.

You won't say that if you heard him at the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Benefit. His rendition of Silver Bells was FLY! As in stone.cold.off the hook GOOD!

I'll take anything that rocks!

The dude is the best to hit a Neumann, there is no doubt! It just kills me to see him go into grandpa mode. I get it but I'm not a fan. Rod Stewart has done it (it sucks, he used to be bad) but I get it.

Brad Delp had the hardest deal and dealt with it appropriately. He brought in help to hit the high notes back on the 86 Tour to keep the music in the original key. Fran did a great job, Brad acknowledged him and it was a great show. Steve and others could take note from this.

Steve's voice is the best ever, bar none! I'm just not down with the grandpa songs. I want to rock still, even if I'm old.

However, there is a band called Greta Van Fleet. They are not old, the dude is a singer, and they rock. I'll listen to them on the regular instead.

Well, Delp could still sing in the original key, just not the highest notes. He could still sing the majority of the songs in the original key, and only needed help for the really high parts.

Perry can't sing anything in the original key now...in fact, some of it might need to be tuned down 2 steps, not just one. Which is not only because of where his voice is today, but a testament of just how high some of his stuff was.

I don't know how people would describe this "mode" or this "era" but it's wonderful to hear some really good Christmas songs.
Mariah Carey put out a Christmas CD years ago when she probably was in her 20s and no one called her Grandma or Rosemary Clooney. Although it is a high compliment. I think it is one of the highest grossing Holidays CDS sold If not the best ever sold. I always think you should play or sing whatever sounds good to you and he's hearing Christmas Carols...then I'd love to hear it. I would imagine if that's what is in your heart during the Holiday season and you can sing it like it should be sung...then I will add it to my Christmas rotation of songs.

LOVE IT! Very Motown Christmas-like.

The full version of Silver Bells is even better, with a nice a cappella intro.

Brilliant version and his voice sounds so amazing. Love how up front it is. No hiding the voice at all and best of all, no f#@king AutoTune!!! It's incredible how beautiful a great voice (in this case a generational best voice) can sound alone. I was trying to think of a version of this song I like better and could not think of one. Hope this one gets lots and lots of airplay over this holiday season and for decades to come! It should become a classic version.

I always said I'd buy Perry singing the phonebook... This is 'nice' and can be played from Nov to Dec. Personally, I cannot wait until he gets back to giving us masterpieces like "You Better Wait". "Sun Shines Gray" was close, but, come on... PLEASE find your heavier side...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

In one of Steve's interviews he said John and him wrote 5 songs together.
hopefully we will get hear them.

I think we all want to hear some harder edged songs,

But when you add them up you get,

Dont Fight it
Strung Out
Don't tell me why your leaving
You Better Wait
Listen to you Heart
and Sun shines Grey.

Wish I could add Lost Angels but it never was released.

Thats 6 out of 40, 15%

So thats 1.5 per song per album.

Love the bluesy arrangement of "Silver Bells". One of the better versions out there. Can't wait for more!

Steve should do a Rockefeller Center tree ceremony appearance.

I gotta disagree with you. His rendition of "Silver Bells" was great. Not sure what people expect Perry to sound like at 70 years old. His rockin Journey days are over.

Lounge act? ....no....lounge act would be slower, less deliberate. This is a very up beat song with a lot of SOOOUUULLL in it! I mean, this reminds me of Street Talk/Traces soul. You go Steve! And that SUSTAINED high note (SSG! WSH (we're still here)...dang!

I agree on your points.

Delp's issue was larger than Perry's as his top end was higher in general. Sweet and Simple being an exception.

Street Talk: Oh Sherrie, I Believe, Its Only Love, She's Mine, You Should Be Happy, Captured By The Moment, String Out, Don't Tell Me Why You're Leavin

FTLOSM: You Better Wait, Young Hearts Forever, Stand Up, Listen to Your Heart

TRACES: No Erasin, SSG, Can We Be Somethin Again, Angel Eyes

That's WAY more than 1.5 song per album.

To me much of these songs are Mid-Tempo.
Yes they are not ballads, but they certainly dont qualify and harder edged rockers, especially Oh Sherrie, IB, Its Only Love, Shes Mine (more of a semi ballad) and Captured by the Moment.

I see. For you its different. Fair enough.
For me...a rock song can be a mid-tempo one. It is one that for 2/3 or 3/4 of the song, has a driving bass line and/or solid-rock guitar base, mid-section or throughout the song. Most of the songs that I listed qualify, including She's Mine for ME. But, everyone's ears/mind/spirit hears music differently. So he is did a lot more rocker songs in Street Talk than even FTLOSM and of course, Traces. But again, everyone hears the music differently. No one opinion is definitive.
