Augeri Solo Album Out Today

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Sun Dec 25, 2022 1:20 am

While Journey is greedily at each others throats, this ex-Journey member released a labor of love. In interviews, Augeri said he has been offered to do cookie-cutter Journey-style albums (prolly Frontiers) but turned it down. What he has finally put out is true to himself and his eclectic influences.

Give it a listen.

Of the tracks, there's a Schon co-write (Desert Moon) and a Cain co-write (Never Far From Home).

Steve has always struck me as a very down to earth, sincere type of guy. Hope his new record does well.

SA mentioned CDs and possibly vinyl for the new year.

I am surprised that none of his previously released singles (riverside, hours in the day, faces, tin soldier etc.) are on here.

I heard he doesn't want to do them no more, of course that was 2 years ago in an interview , I guess anyone can change their minds. I'm pretty sure he is in between Arnel and Auggie age wise. It would be nice to hear at least one more cd from him.

It would be cool if those tracks are included in the physical releases as bonus tracks, crossing my fingers.

The violin on "Never Far From Home" indicates early on that the album isn't going to be business as usual.
That said - it's all very melodic and catchy.
Adam's guitar playing is incredible.
Looking forward to Andrew's review!

Listening to the album now...pretty darned decent!

I wonder, are these two songs new co-writes, or holdouts from his time with Journey?

They are holdouts. Augeri said he hoped to get Jon or Neal to play on a song or two. Obviously didn't happen.

Yeah, Schon said he couldn't recall the track.

I'd love to get Augeri's Lose Myself on an official package of his greatest hits. It might be my favorite song of his: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qThjr6XHAWE
(Just listened again as I typed this - God its gorgeous)

Interesting. And because of this, he couldn't play on it?

As good as it is, I think he is just a hired gun for that Bad Penny project. BP have released other singles featuring Rob Halford and Todd La Torre.

As much as I love Steve Augeri's singing I haven't paid super close attention to what songs or albums he has released outside of Journey.

I have the Tall Stories CD, but that's it outside of him with Journey.

Can one of you please fill me in on any of Steve Augeri's releases outside of Journey and the Tall Stories album, be it full albums or singles?

Thanks!

Since being fired from Journey, he has released a variety of singles. Most are available on YT or can be found on his website. Some are quite good. Some are half-baked or suffer from too many ideas.

As for non-Journey albums, you have:

Tall Stores (prolly a top 10 MR release for me)
Tyketto - Shine
Tyketto - Take Out and Served Up Live
Tall Stores 2 - Skyscraper (more diverse than 1, but sort of all over the place)
Seven Ways Til Sunday - his first official solo release out now. Fantastic!

A more extensive list can be found on Wikipedia.

A fan said Steve A showed up at his house to deliver the CD in person. Not a joke. More details on social media.

late for this---
Heard Augeri's interview on the Rock Solid podcast. Great interview. Had forgotten about his album release. It's a really good album. Bought it and his singles after the podcast. I remember being a bit letdown after the 2nd Tall Stories album so I kind of lost track of Augeri. I really like the new album. Nice to have new music from him. A little variety on there, too. 4/5.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I've always appreciated your vocal insights. Curious on your take on some of these tracks. Some songs like Baited Breath or Never Far From Home sound like pristine SA in full voice. Other tracks like Desert Moon or Drive have that falsetto zipped up voice sound that he uses when he tours. Did you notice this?

Yeah, honestly, I look at vocals closely, but if he's able to do what he's doing, considering where he was and his age, then I'm not going to complain. Especially after going through my own vocal bs- I'm not gonna complain. His voice works well in these songs- which are made for him. Just like the Tall Stories stuff- those songs were made for his voice (I mean, Sister of Mercy, c'mon, killer track). The pre-Arrival Journey stuff was made for SP. Augeri's recorded stuff with Journey worked great for him. I remember u loving 'Arrival'. Great sounding album and he sang well on it.

I was hard on SA here about his live singing - but sometimes, you just have to get through the gig- and, like AP, SP, and JSS- they were/are singing the hardest songs in the biz. I was hard on JSS, too. Great singer, I just heard those really early Journey shows he did, and that formed an opinion, but he fixed whatever was going on and ended up doing really well at the end.

I know that Drive isn't a favorite track of peeps. I like that one quite a bit, actually. But I also didn't fault him for Butterfly and Believe, which peeps hated. There are moments here where he does sound pristine. I find that he sounds like Hugo on some of em, too. Like he's using the same vocal approach (voodoo?) that Hugo did. I swear, it sounds like that guy is just whispering the words and yet these f'ng incredible high notes just flop out. I don't know the album well enough to remember which is which and where he does what. Missing album covers and artwork... But I like the album as a whole. I like the variety of the songs, too.
