Lou Gramm-like singers discographies

Postby Maro » Mon Oct 20, 2008 1:39 am

As promised in my older topic "Chalfant/Hugo/Augeri/other Perrylike singers discographies"...

http://forums.melodicrock.com/phpBB/vie ... hp?t=36828

...I'm starting this new topic with continuation of my research of discographies of great melodic rock singers.
This time, I'm presenting singers with vocal range and singing style with more or less simmilarities to Lou Gramm (ex Foreigner).
As with my old topic, there would be some obvious choices and some controversial choices which might provoke discussion.
I'm posting this in Journey forum instead of Foreigner forum because this is place where most people hang around, and it would propably go unnoticed in Foreigner forum. It's not like it's uncommon practice to post stuff unrelated to Journey here.

For now, I'm planning to cover following singers, in alphabetic order:

JEFF ADAMS (Under Suspicion)
PHILIP BARDOWELL (Places Of Power)
ROBERT BERRY (Alliance)
STAN BUSH
JAMES CHRISTIAN (House Of Lords)
ALAN CLARK (Change Of Heart)
GORAN EDMAN (Street Talk)
JOHNNY EDWARDS (ex Foreigner)
MARK FREE (ex Signal)
AL FRITSCH (Drive, She Said)
PETER GOALBY (ex Uriah Heep)
THOM GRIFFIN (Ambition)
GREGORY LYNN HALL (101 South)
KELLY HANSEN (Foreigner, ex Hurricane)
ROBERT HART (Jones Gang, ex Bad Company)
TERRY HATTY (ex Guess Who)
DAVID HENDRICKS (Bonrud)
BRIAN HOWE (ex Bad Company)
DANN HUFF (Giant)
ROBBIE LA BLANC (Blanc Faces)
JIMMY LAWRENCE (Skin Tag, solo)
MICHELE LUPPI (Los Angeles)
MITCH MALLOY
DANNY MALONE (Diving For Pearls)
ROBIN MCAULEY (Survivor, ex MSG)
KEITH MITCHELL (ex Shooting Star)
KEITH MURRELL (ex Airrace)
STEVE NEWMAN (Newman)
BENJAMIN ORR (ex The Cars)
CHRIS OUSEY (Heartland)
STEVE OVERLAND (FM)
JEFF PARIS
JOHN PARR
GLENN PIERSON (Norway)
DAVID POLEMENI (Boystown)
FRANKE PREVITE (Franke & The Knockouts)
DAVID REECE (Bangalore Choir)
TROY REID (Stranded)
KEN TAMPLIN (Shout)
ROBERT TEPPER
PATRIK TIBELL (T'Bell)
BRUCE TURGON
JOE LYNN TURNER
NICK VAN EEDE (Cutting Crew)
JOE VANA (Mecca)
DENNIS WARD (Khymera)
DARREN WHARTON (Dare)

BRIAN HOWE:

Shy - Girl (It's All I Have) - rare single, unreleased on cd; this wasn't the same band as Tony Mills' Shy
Ted Nugent - Penetrator
Bad Company - Fame and Fortune
Bad Company - Dangerous Age
Bad Company - Holy Water
Bad Company - Here Comes Trouble
Bad Company - What You Hear Is What You Get: The Best of Bad Company Live
Brian Howe - Tangled In Blue (later rereleased as Touch)
unreleased second Brian Howe, recorded in late 90's, apparently exists somewhere in vaults
there was a talk about harder rocking new solo album being recorded couple of years ago

Notice:
Ted Nugent is singing lead vocals on couple Penetrator songs.
Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke is singing one song on Holy Water and same goes for Here Comes Trouble album.

TERRY HATTY:

The Guess Who - Lonely One (also released as Liberty)

Notice:
There was also live album The Spirit Lives On: Greatest Hits Live recorded by Terry Hatty-lead line-up of The Guess Who, but it's most likely of small interest for most melodic rock fans.
In early 80's, Terry Hatty sung in band named Ram which recorded one rare album for label which was soon busted for record piracy so it went out of stores and apparently never resurfaced again.
As far as I know, Terry Hatty went in theatrical business after The Guess Who, so I doubt we'll see another melodic rock cd with his vocals.

BRUCE TURGON:

Bruce Turgon - Outside Looking In

Notice:
Bruce Turgon, long time collaborator of Lou Gramm, played bass in Lou Gramm's bands Black Sheep, Shadow King, Foreigner and on Lou Gramm's two solo albums from 80's.
As heard on his solo album, his vocals have strong simmilarities with Lou Gramm's.
Last news from him are that he's been working with another Lou Gramm-soundlike, Philip Bardowell, in project named Places Of Power which has recorded album Now Is The Hour, awaiting release on Frontiers Records.

Good list but imo, no one can touch Gramm.

Might be... anyway, purpose of this list isn't to start a debate about who's the best, or better than Lou Gramm... I'm simply trying to give comprehensive guide to discographies of singers who might be of interest to more open-minded Lou Gramm & Foreigner fans... the same as I was trying to do with Steve Perry & Journey fans in Perrylike vocalists topic... 8)

Robin McAuley a Lou Gramm like singer..? Hardly! In fact that's an insulting comparison.

One of "controversial" choices in this topic... The same as Danny Vaughn as Steve Perry-like singer in my old topic...
Good singer nevertheless... I'd cover his discography later on here, for people who want it... Who disagrees with my comparison, sorry for that...

Appreciate the guides but doesn't matter if you don't intend to start debates. Debates will happen. My expressing that Gramm has no equal doesn't mean I"m close minded. IMO = its my opinion, TIOLI

I'm a supporter of these indexes so keep it going. I'll be checking out the other singers. Anyone that sounds like Gramm is in good company. I enjoy what Johnny Edwards recorded with F more than KH.

I'm sorry if You got the impression that I was implying that You're close minded.
I hope You and all other people hanging here would find something of interest in this topic while I'm doing it... It takes some time for me to make satisfactory research so I'll be updating this topic for days, one by one...
Also, I have another topic in planning for afterwards, but I won't give details now... 8)

No sweat, thanks Maro.

I don't know how you find the time to do these but hope you continue. I found Jim Jidhed through you Perry list. Some of the intonations on Revelation are reminiscent of Jidhed's "Full Circle".

But what was recorded by this amazing group, would stand the test of time.

I haven't read over these lists, so I'm no doubt going to be naming several that have already been named.

I would say that a few of the most similar voices to Gramm's are...

Jimi Jamison
Joe Lynn Turner
Johnny Edwards
Paul Rodgers
Dan Huff

And to a much lesser extent, John Waite.

OK, now that I've skimmed through the lists....

I should have remembered John Parr. I have heard some similarity between them in the past.

And Brian Howe was another good one.
