So you go from being gay to Satanic? That's actually one of the more listenable songs I've heard from them. The intro is actually pretty cool.

 Your Anthrax video killed off my gay mood this morning....

Yes - that is one of the better Slayer songs isn't it? The album version has an even longer intro...with flutes.

Are you a fan of this one? Even though St Anger was a low point in Metallica's career I almost get high off this song:

Frantic - Metallica

I can't take Hetfield's vocals anymore. The last good Metallica album was "Metallica". "Load" had a few good tracks on it but they basically went in the tank from there on out. Popularity did them in, in my opinion. They haven't captured the intensity they had, especially from "Kill 'Em All" through "...And Justice for All".

Yes - I agree - and in fact I'd go further and say that they lost their magic and intensity when Cliff Burton died. Even "And Justice For All" was a let down for me. But as you say...there are a few great tracks here and there from all the albums after MOP.

Did you see the "Some Kind of Monster" documentary? Now THAT was a classic.

For me, the "...And Justice for All" album sounds pretty much the same as the previous albums and retains their intensity. That was the first Metallica album I ever owned but not my favorite. I prefer "Master of Puppets" and "Ride the Lightning".

No, haven't seen it.

I thought the production - especially the drums - were a bit flat. But to be honest...I was one of those fans who was uncomfortable with the band moving on so quickly after Burton died...and I was never convinced by Newsted...so I bought that abum wanting not to like it in some weird way.

I saw Metallica in concert a week before Burton died and he did this breathtaking, melancholy solo which genuinely moved the entire crowd of metalheads. I reckon he was so much more than 'just the bass player' - and Metallica have never seemed complete without him.

Having said that...the new bass player is great...and many Metallica fans - including myself - have great hopes for the new album. Interesting too that Metallica have just done a European tour playing Master of Puppets from start to finish...so this return to the classic era combined with Rick Rubin (and not Bob Rock) producing the new record is reason - I think - to be excited again.

No, haven't seen it.

I can't recommend "Some Kind of Monster" highly enough. It's even funnier than Spinal Tap...

I find that hard to believe, but perhaps I'll pick it up sometime. "This Is Spinal Tap" is one of my favorite all-time movies.

Yes - mine too. But Metallica are just as ludicrous in this documentary...and of course it's all real. :)

I must agree with you Dave, that This Is Spinal Tap is one of the alltime masterpieces of moviemaking 8) Incredible that they are able to go through it straight-faced.

I don't know if Some Kind of Monster is equally funny though :) Although the alpha and beta male run ins certainly are there. The slapstick humor is missing that's for sure, you don't see Lars falling off his drumkit chair

I did enjoy the scene from the DVD extras though when Lars throws a diva tantrum because no-one told him about the Hawaian shirt theme for Kirk's 40th birthday party.

And as for Lars' dad...you couldn't make that guy up....

But yes...maybe it is over-selling it to say that Some Kind of Monster is as funny as Spinal Tap....but I'd say it's up there with other metal classics such as The Decline and Fall of Western Civilsation Part Two...and Heavy Metal Parking Lot.... :)

Yes it is :) Very much comparable to those two. Isn't it in The Decline... that Chris Holmes downs two full bottles of vodka in his swimming pool, in front of his mother?

Haven't watched the DVD sadly, only the version shown on Danish TV. You are right about Lars' dad, Torben. He is a real character. He used to be a tennis pro (I don't know if you know this). Actually my late grandmother and he were peripheral friends when they were teenagers, and she used to say that he changed...a lot!

 That's the one LF. The director Penelope Spheeris has said that she'd thought at the time that the interview had been a total disaster...that they'd left Holmes' house thinking they'd wasted a day's filming. Now of course it's the one scene everyone remembers.

How funny! I wonder if he gew that stange beard after Lars became a successful rock star?

It's worth seeing the DVD extras...some great moments...such as Lars' son going on stage to throw a Spiderman web out on the audience and the crowd getting the wrong idea thinking he was doing the devil sign...plus there's an extended clip of that TRAGIC therapy session with Dave Mustaine...and the collaboration between Metallica and Jah Rule the rap star when Bob Rock embarrasses himself by trying to be 'street'....

Talking of great rock documentaries...have you seen Dig?

Embarrasingly, I've never heard that one before...

Anyway, great tune. The only thing I don't like is the Gibson Thunderbird. Don't like the looks of those. Sounds okay, though.

Dave - glad you like it - it's off an album called "Obsession" - which is full of tracks just as good if not better than that one...a true late 70s hard rock classic. That album was a huge influence on Metallica, strangely enough...

Do you mean the lead guitar in that video? That was Paul Chapman miming to Michael Schenker's parts (he'd just left the band at that point)...so the guitar used on the record was actually a Flying V.

Or is a Flying V a Gibson Thunderbird?

Okay - thanks - it was definitely the Flying V on the record...and the Thunderbird on the video.

I agree - the Thunderbird isn't an attractive guitar for lead...although it looks okay as a bass...
