conversationpc wrote:No, I prefer Bruford. He's a much better drummer overall though White is certainly no slouch. He filled in when Bruford quit for the "Close to the Edge" tour with very short notice and basically picked right up where Bruford left off. Anyway, I prefer Bruford's jazzier more intricate technique to White's rock style. "Fragile", which is one my favorite albums overall, is one of the few albums that I will specifically try to listen to the drum track on occasion. Great stuff there!

It's true - it would be hard to argue that White was more gifted than Bruford - and I couldn't think of a White drum track I'd specifically listen to (although White and Squire work so brilliantly together on Gates of Delrium and I've listened to that song hundreds of times for this combination alone....more for Squire than White though).

But as a group Yes seemed to sound bigger and grander after White joined...less fiddly or jazzy, as you say...and more epic and stadium-sized instead....but how much this is due to the arrival of White or the group's burgeoning egomania it's hard to tell.

Without looking, I believe you're right about his first Savatage production being HOTMK, but I'm not 100% sure on that. His influence is more clearly seen starting on "Dead Winter Dead" (1995). A lot of that album could very well have been on a TSO album if you removed the lyrics. In fact "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo)" by TSO, which has been the most requested Christmas song on radio for several years running now, first appeared on DWD. It is the exact same version as the TSO one, actually.

I think Fight For The Rock came after Power of the Night - so there must have been a producer hired in between Norman and O'Neil...for that period when Savatage tried to go 'commercial'. My memory is that O'Neil got them totally back on track.

I haven't heard much TSO stuff...and I'd forgotten there was a Savatage connection. What's the best song to start with?

Hey Melissa...congratulations on ten years!

I'm getting married in two weeks time...and me and future wife are debating about which Journey song to choose for the dreaded first dance....I say Faithfully...but she wants WYLAW....and she thinks all the "road ain't no place to start a family" lines aren't 'quite right'. How do I get what I want in this situation? Or should I just humour her?

OMG!!! We had that same discussion about that VERY line too! LOL!!! But he's a cop & was (& still is) "on the road" at the time, so it kinda fit I guess somehow? lol :)

WYLAW is great though! TOUGH choice. And we did "start a family", awesome little boy & little girl! :)

Congrats to you! You'll have to update when you choose a song! lol :)

"Fight for the Rock" was dreadful, though there are a couple of good tracks, "Edge of Midnight" comes to mind. I love the Gothic-sounding organ intro in that one. I tried looking up O'Neill on that album online and it mentions him being on the album. Whether he produced it or not, I can't recall right off but he does play guitar, so perhaps he lent some rhythm playing to that album.

 How funny....well, I'm never on the road...in fact, I need to get out a bit more often...so I can't use that argument....but maybe I should concede on this debate...because I have persuaded her to have Don't Stop Believin' played at the actual ceremony itself...not that I'm obsessed with Journey or anything...

Congrats again on your anniversary, Melissa. Actually, me and future wife have been together - on and off - for a decade now too...so it's not exactly been a whirlwind romance...but we got there in the end. :)

Try "Madrigal" from "A Farewell to Kings". Great little track...

When the dragons grow too mighty
To slay with pen or sword
I grow weary of the battle
And the storm I walk toward
When all around is madness
And there's no safe port in view
I long to turn my path homeward
To stop a while with you

When life becomes as barren
And as cold as winter skies
There's a beacon in the darkness
In a distant pair of eyes
In vain to search for honor
In vain to search for truth
But these things can still be given
Your love has shown me proof
