Wow, interesting. I think I need to reread this and think some of my initial reactions through a little before I say anything else.

Interesting read. Am I correct in assuming that English is not the writer's first language? There are several errors throughout the piece. Grammar and punctuation aside, it was interesting to get Ross' take on things. His comments about a few fans were surprising.

He mentioned the DL tour in counjunction with AvatarGate. Here we KNOW it was in cunjunction w/ the Gens. tour. But will most numbskulled fans who read it make the distinction? Honest mistake or a Clintion-esque bit of Q&A there?
Put it this way. In answering the question about the DL tour the way he did, Ross didn't lie.

First, Jeff denies being buds with Deano and now Ross practically calls him insane.
Amazingly, just earlier in the year both Neal and Ross were begging Andrew to relay to Dean the message of please take down the blog.
I'd choose my words carefully, Ross.
Dean may have taken down the blog, but he certainly didn't destroy the evidence.

Er, yea I guess Valory went a little further down that road than Neal did in HIS interview. :o

Again, though, as I hypothesized, RV can just say "He asked about the DL tour not 2005." :D

Loved "Second Wind." They must have had a lot of fun doing that album.

That has got to be the best interview, from any band member in Journey, for some time.

Interesting points. Safe responses??? I would never expect to hear any band member admit to the use of tapes publicly- for theirs and Augeri's sake. However, what has been said privately.... well..... won't ever really be known publicly

Funny how instead of clearing up some things, this interview confuses even more. However, the casual fan who reads this has no idea of the nuances or of the huge amount of details that we,the die-hards know,so I guess it doesn't make such a difference in the fanbase big picture.

First thing I've noticed tho was this:"The band split up entirely after that for approximately 10 years and reformed briefly in 1996 for the album 'Arrival'." Wonder if it was Ross's mistake,or the author's.

Shania, I think they went into TBF thinking it would be called Arrival according to Herbie's original album title plan and it was changed during the recording of it.

It's an obvious mistake. Who cares. Let's not blow this up just for the hell of it.

It's all water under the bridge, we have a new direction, the band is kicking ass now. Let's enjoy it.

I think that it was an error in print. Ross said that TBF was his favorite as did Jon, at one time. I think that Smitty also stated this.

Two things I want to comment on.....

"In that setting, Steve Smith and I left, we'd had enough
and I think it was probably a good time to do so.

I think I would have done the same.

"It turns out the person who stirred up the tape issue is not a journalist
and didn't have the correct information. It appears to me some people
have too much time on their hands, sometimes fans can be over-obsessed
with the band of their dreams and they can get to be too imaginative
or creative in order to provoke a response. It's like they're clutching
at straws, and even inventing those straws! I don't, of course, wish
to disparage the bulk of our fans."

Though Ross may feel that way and his say holds
more hands than mine, I respectfully disagree.
The one that he refers to is a die hard fan who has sunk
loads of cash into this band and took a stand for what he
felt unjustified with.
Yes it was harsh, yes it was over the top but in THAT fans
eye's it was correct and I personally am glad he did so.
It does not appeal to me in spending 70+ bucks to see a
band that was lip'n.
I just wanted it to be known at the start so I could be given
the option of live or Memorex before I shelled out the dough.

My feelings here...........
Mr Valory, as bad as I want to see you and the Scarab Sir's
I am not willing to spend what my Hubby breaks his back to earn
on a show that is not live from every musician's standpoint.

Looking forward to checking out the new front man, live
and in person.

Well, I've always felt Ross was a jerk-off anyway. Imo, If Neal wasn't his long time friend, he would be playing bars somewhere in the bay area. On the couple of occasions I've met him, he was dick head..I'll never forget how he was an asshole to my son, NEVER!

We don't know the circumstances of the interview either. It was at Mardi Gras, so it could have been loud and confusing for anyone. I think when Ross and as said above, Jon, stated that TBF as their favorite, it had more to do with the band getting back together after 10 years, and how much fun it was to have the gang all there with Smitty and Ross back in their respective saddles. Like the good old days.

Please elaborate what he did to your son....IF you so desire. Mentioning that and not elaborating is a bit unfair to the reader. As far as Ross's playing goes, NOTHING could be further from the truth. He's an outstanding bass player and the catalog MORE than proves that.

Well, I'd rather not get into it, but he was rude to my son (Who was only eight at the time) at the Hard Rock in SF when the band got their star on the walk of fame. Lets just say he is not my favorite person. With that being said, I'll always be a fan.

As far as his playing, I thought TBF was really good, but other than that sub-par.

Interesting, his facts differ from others....

However I found this rather amusing......

"There were reports in the press and on the internet that Journey used backing tapes on the Leppard tour?

This is another urban myth! It just didn't happen. The rumour got prominence because we were changing singers - Steve Augieri's voice did give out. It's a very difficult setlist. Not even Steve Perry could hold up very long, I believe, because these songs are very demanding of any singer. "

So is Ross giving us fair warning that this fiasco will happen again in another year or so? His words " because these songs are very demanding of any singer. "

Well they didn't use backing tapes on the Leppard tour, it was before that, so by saying that, he was correct.

It's one thing to deny it and another thing to start insulting fans, calling them obsessed and grabbing at straws. Plenty of people who were supporting the band with cold hard cash at multiple concerts, heard the evidence of tapegate. It wasn't enough to be ripped off...and then lied to about it.? Now we're gonna get insulted by the band for knowing what we know?
If you buy what Ross is saying about what's to come, then it sounds like there will be more digging into the back catalog, plus the obligatory dirty dozen...nothing more LIVE.
Sometimes it's better for the band not to do any interviews than come out and insult fans.
