Imagine if Jereremy gets the job and Journey release a DVD of him singing the old hits. Why would this be any more or less a tribute performance than the one we saw in 2001?

Here's my beef with the whole tribute-band-thing. A band can do covers -- playing songs that were made famous by someone else. But a band can also do tribute performance -- and for me that means dressing in costumes with (in this case) '80s hair-do's and imitations of all the mannerisms. I'm not sure if Jeremey's band went that far, but some obviously do, and that's definitely where I draw the line.

Also, back in 2001, there was at least a pretense of moving forward with new music, new CDs, etc. If circumstances intervened (including decline of AOR, rise of Napster/downloads, maturation of CD market and accompanying record labels) and made that impossible, so be it -- but at least there was an effort.

But now I'm hearing that "preserving the legacy" is the focus (read: "new music and CDs? fuhgedaboutit ...."). That is the difference, and that's why I thought the move to JSS was a bold, encouraging move. It was a conscious attempt to put a talented frontman/singer/songwriter at the helm of the band, with no veneer about imitating a sound from 20+ years ago, although the band would still perform the dirty-dozen hits that fans wanted to hear in the big venues (15-25,000-seat amphitheatres).
