If you're looking for classic-rock/metal vocalists, hands down, Freddie Mercury, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford... and Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. I love Ian Gillan.

When I think of "Great" vocalists, I usually consider those who put alot of feeling into their notes rather than just those who have a broad vocal range. But, at times, those 2 characteristics can combine. Sticking just with the "rockers"

Dudes

Paul Stanley
Steve Perry
Paul Rodgers
David Coverdale
JSS
Brad Delp
Dennis DeYoung
Freddie Mercury
Sebastian Bach
David Readman

Chicks

Ann Wilson
Doro
Stevie Nicks (possibly the sexiest voice in rock music)
Fiona
Alannah Miles
Pat Benetar
Robin Beck
Carly Simon

Here's a great list of male and female Rock vocalists

Males

Females

In Rock, my favorite would have to be Freddie with JSS coming in a close second, but I'm suprised not one has yet mentioned Brian Johnson or Mike Matijevic. Brian is very recognizable, and Mike has alot of range and one of the best screams in the biz. Lots of good choices on here, though.

Perry's not even the best vocalist of the genre for godssakes.

What I'm wondering now is could Jeff be the premier vocalist in the business today? :|

David Pack from Ambrosia is a great vocalist. I read somewhere that he was tone deaf. Pretty impressive that he sings and writes such great melodies considering that.

I don't think anyone is really tone deaf. I remember Yngwie Malmsteen talking about this in a guitar mag interview back in the 90s. It's basically just a matter of training the ear. Some people are better than others but no one is really tone deaf unless they're actually deaf.

Well forgetting stage presence, appearance or the kinda show they put on and solely on voice id say the following spring to mind:

Geoff Tate
JSS
Sammy Hagar
Joe Lynn Turner
Ronnie James Dio
David Coverdale
Glenn Hughes
James Labrie (Sometimes..not always a fan live)
Steve Perry
Lou Gramm
Bruce Dickinson
Steve Tyler
Jeff Keith (Tesla)
Robert Plant (during the 70's)
Sebastian Bach

They're the first that spring to mind.

cheers,

Nick

Great list - covers a lot of area -

First time I have seen Linda Perry on anyone's list - she was excellent in 4 non-blondes .... now she is
mostly writing and producing some nice young talent!!

Cat

Yes, Linda Perry is mostly behind the scenes these days, but if you ever get the chance to see her live, don't miss out!
Along with 4-Non Blondes, her solo albums are fantastic as well.

I guess he is as I think 'Drew has written some pretty solid things about him as a singer. But I couldn't resist the Melrose Place/Golf joke, and not being familiar w/ his work outside of All I Need I'm like the music fans who only know Journey for Open Arms.

7 days and each day gets better, can't say I'm never gonna take another drop but I had to do something as I was very much fucking up my business and family life.....can't keep drinkin' like a teenager at 40+ and I've realised that now. I'm planning a new start with the business as that was part of the problem but don't want to bore you all with that.

Anybody have non alcoholic drink suggestions please pm me as I'm fed up with diet coke  Don't post them here as it'll mess the thread up.
