Yep, it was Journey before Perry and it's Journey after. Journey was more successful with Perry, but Van Halen was more successful with Hagar. Doesn't make it any less Van Halen without Hagar.
Rick - I guess that is logical but come on....I'd hardly compare the success of the DLR line-up of Van Halen with that of the Augeri line-up of Journey...or the 70s prog line-up...or JSS's brief stint in the band...or the current Arnel line-up.
Let's be honest...both the DLR and Hagar line-ups 'stood up on their own two feet'. Journey have never accomplished this before or after Perry...

Just like Chicago made the transition from Cetera to Scheff....truth is, these other bands who have changed the frontman, made pretty fuckin' sure they had the right replacement and gave them time to integrate. As for Toto, they seem to hold the secret to rotating band members and it works each time.

There are ALOT more people that are aware of more than the chart-topping hits than one might think.

Styxman - did the transition to Scheff really work out? I know that had some chart success after the 17 album - but nothing that has gone on to achieve classic status like the hits from the Cetera era.
As for Toto...well, I guess they've managed that by never employing an all-time legend as a frontman. All the singers - good as they were - all fit into that anonymous session guy ethos, didn't they?

Sorry Matt, I wasn't looking at it from a Hit point of view, just how well the band continued on after Cetera. Funny to hear Simon Cowell state the other night how stuck in its time... 'If you leave me....' was. I don't always agree with what comes out of his mouth but that Chicago track just can't be brought up to date, poor young girl that tried to cover went out
I no way watch AI, it just happened to be on when I flicked channels
