If you trust a guy who derails John Edwards regularly for his wealth, and then turns around and signs a new radio contract for 50 million dolars, you are worse than ignorant. You are a lumbering catatonic GOP sapsucker.

But I live in the Bay Area. If you think I don't have the liberal POV shoved down my throat during every local news cast, you're insane. :D

The media aren't liberal. Most local stations are owned by multi-billion conglomorates like GE or Disney. Content choices are made top down and hinge on the bottom line, not ideology.

Glenn doesn't have a problem with ANYONE in America being wealthy. In fact, he'll actually sing out loud "God Bless America...." He calls out Edwards on his hypocrisy and his "two Americas" rhetoric. Yes, the great John Edwards can become wealthy and successful, but you cannot is basically his message. He deserves to be called out on that.

The media is most definitely liberal, but we can agree to disagree on that. I'm not going to stoop to calling you names because I disagree with your political POV.

Most of what Olbermann has railed against since taking the gloves off has revolved around issues that conservatives and liberals should share common cause (i.e. the abuses of the Executive Branch, civil liberties etc)

I wasn't meaning to get political...but I liked him on SC with Dan Patrick. They were funny together. That's all I meant. :-)

The_Noble_Cause wrote:I do know Beck. Well enough to know that nearly everything he says is interspersed with dunce-hat sarcasm, and rubber faced contortions (he actually used to broadcast right out of my city of Philadelphia). It's his fail safe. He can claim to be a "serious thinker" when he so desires, and when he finds himself actually held accountable for his incendiary asshattery, he can just as quickly retreat to "I was only making a joke."

He has done it time and time again.

Until recently, even though I knew you were a liberal, I was beginning to think that you were at least fair. However, this exchange seems to indicate that you're not even being rational. This whole thing started on his radio show. Again, it is obvious, both from context and from the tone of voice that was used that it was a joke. Don't give me that "He meant it seriously but does it in a joking manner so he can get away with it" crap.

There are conservative talk show hosts who are not always genuine, trustworthy people, in my opinion. People like Hannity, Limbaugh, and Savage come to mind in that vein. Beck isn't one of them. There are lots on the liberal side as well. I could just as well use the same kind of arguments you've done here about the genuine liberals in talk radio if I wanted to be an overbearing ass but I'm fair enough to admit there are some who aren't all about money and making publicity for themselves.

Ignorance be not proud.
A study came out that revealed over 12% of Americans get their news from talk radio. Given that you listen to Beck's show in it's 3-hour entiriety (something that defies the statistical listening average of the adult radio listener) I take it you are one of these poor misguided fools.
I'd like to think most people have higher standards for their news than a ex-drug addict who never went to college.

If this isn't an elitist snob kind of comment, I don't know what is. Who gives a flying monkey crap if he never went to college and making fun of someone for straightening out their lives when they were slowly killing themselves is beyond the pale. Everyone has had their vices. Glenn's was drugs and alcohol. Please enlighten us as to your vice so that we can belittle you publicly, here on the forum.

Media Matters posted the full audio, video, as well as the transcript. They didn't "make it" look like anything. They didn't have to.
As with Rush's "phony soldiers" swipe, his actions speak for themselves.

Again, if you heard his radio show, he actually engages in a conversation with his coworkers on the show, saying that people like Media Matters and Olbermann will try to make it look he is taking the antichrist thing seriously. I even had my wife watch the video from the Media Matters site (she hates talk radio and could not care less about Glenn...) and even she thought it was ridiculous that anyone would come anywhere close to thinking he was serious.

Come on people...If you want to poke fun at right-wing talk radio, there are plenty of examples from other hosts like Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, and others that provide that kind of fodder on a daily basis. This isn't one of them.

If he would stick to the issues instead of making up news stories, you might have a point there. This one's an example where he either flat out lied or just didn't bother doing his homework.

Nader has had a great idea for some time called "Draft at the Top." If and when Congress and the President decide to take the country to war, all politicians with children of age will be automatically conscripted into the military. Sounds good to me.

Say, where is the outcry from the Right on Matt Druge revealing Prince Harry's undisclosed confidential location in Afghanistan and jeopardising his unit?

I like the way that the Israelis do it. Mandatory service at age 18. Three years for men, Two for women. It is not as practical in this country. But I'd settle for Nader's plan.

I heard plenty about it when it was first disclosed. I don't remember for sure but I heard it at least two places, Beck's show and "Hannity & Colmes", if I remember correctly.

Kiss my ass. Beck and his wife adopted a special needs child, you moron. So did my wife and I. Regardless, I've been a regular listener to his show for about four years now and he doesn't even often mention the abortion issue. That's not very self-righteous, is it?

Beck is a tool. You blast Olberman. But look the other way when Beck rips off gems like this one at the time of the Southern California wildfires.

On the October 22 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, host Glenn Beck stated, “I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today.”

Classy. Or was he joing then as well.

Just like any talk show host, everyone is bound to say something stupid and that was one. I'm a member of Beck's site and he was roundly scolded by most of the Insiders that morning. He got what he deserved on that one.

He also apologized for that statement on the air, but I don't suppose you have that quote, do you?

That was one of the times that Glenn really pissed me off. I know where he was coming from, but it was a very callous remark. It certainly was NOT just the Hollywood idiots losing their homes.

At least Glenn comes right and tells you that his commentary is coming from a conservative POV. Olbermann carries on as though he's some kind of journalist and refuses to admit what is the obvious - that he's a hard core lefty.

I think he has a LOT of those stupid on air moments. Asking someone if Obama is the anti Christ is one of them.

Frankly I am glad that there are resources such as Media Matters to provide some accountability for the talking heads.

Once again...It was a joke. It was prefaced on Glenn's radio program by him saying that he receives TONS of letters from weirdos about how Obama is the antichrist and how some of the same types of weirdos thought that Clinton was the antichrist. THE WHOLE THING WAS A JOKE, PEOPLE. Just man up and admit you were wrong, for crying out loud.

For the record, I remember you posting your disapproval of those remarks on the Insider board during the broadcast and I remember a ton of other Insiders being upset about it as well.

FYI, here's the part of the show from March 7th where he predicts that Media Matters will pick up the Antichrist joke discussion as serious...

Glenn: By the way, this is all gonna be transcribed by Media Matters today as a completely dead serious conversation.

Guest: I know, I know.

Glenn: it's gonna be great. There are gonna be media alerts..."Glenn Beck announces Obama is the Antichrist." You watch. {laughter} It'll be everywhere.

Also, on his February 20th radio show, Glenn talked with his guest at the time about how he gets all these weird emails from listeners claiming that Obama is the Antichrist and also about how he used to get them about Bill Clinton as well. He joked with his guest on that show that he was stocking up on silver bullets in case Obama really was the Antichrist. The guest pointed out that silver bullets were really for werewolves. Glenn jokingly acted disappointed and asked if there was any chance that Obama was a vampire or werewolf. Maybe he was serious about that one, too?

FYI, about Obama being the Antichrist (also on the Feb. 20th show), Glenn said "The devil is much more clever than that"...Also a joke. But I guess actual humor is lost on the Media Matters and Olbermann crowd.

This "I Was Only Joking" excuse has been invoked everytime his words get him in trouble.
From his on-air fantasies of strangling Michael Moore to asking a US Weekly reporter to strip to his most recent anti-Christ comment.
Everyone, including Olbermann, is well aware that Beck's delivery is more often than not tongue in cheek.
So too was Imus's, the Greaseman's, and incalcuable scores of brash-mouthed disc-jockeys whose plots now fill the talk radio graveyard

Just this week I heard Beck rejoicing over Director Anthony Minghella's death because he found The English Patient boring.
Ha..Ha...Ha?
You really defend this juvenile shit?

There are conservative talk show hosts who are not always genuine, trustworthy people, in my opinion. People like Hannity, Limbaugh, and Savage come to mind in that vein. Beck isn't one of them.

LOL.
That's why Beck came running to Rush Limbaugh's immediate defense about "phony soldiers" without ever playing the clip of Rush's own words?
That wouldn't have had anything to do with the fact that nationwide Beck and Rush are packaged together now would it?
Of the above, I will admit Beck and Savage can be more honest at times, but not by much.

There are lots on the liberal side as well. I could just as well use the same kind of arguments you've done here about the genuine liberals in talk radio if I wanted to be an overbearing ass but I'm fair enough to admit there are some who aren't all about money and making publicity for themselves.

Go ahead. Brent Bozell's Newsbusters/Media Research liberal monitoring site has been around and getting publicity alot longer than Media Matters has. Bring it on.

I'm not arguing that I am purer than the driven snow, I am positing that Beck is an uneducated sob. And also quite possibly brain-damaged.

The guise of "humor" attempted no matter how unsuccesfully is not a get out of jail free card.
We all know Beck is joking.
That does little to paper over the ignorance of the question or the race-baiting intentions lying under it's surface.

And by the way, both ThinkProgress and MediaMatters, which initially carried the story, included full transcript and video.
Something Beck failed to mention when rallying his puppets to his cause.

When the rest of the mainstream media gave Bush's eight years of law trampling a pass, Olbermann bravely took a stand.

Here's a page called Olbermann Watch that points out the stupidity of Media Matters and Keith "rip and read" Olbermann.

The sixth video down on the page deals with the whole Beck situation in which Glenn clearly shows how Media Matters and Olbermann were complicit in lying about the Antichrist comments. It also points out that Media Matters claimed that Glenn didn't ask Hagee about his controversial comments regarding Catholics and then shows how that was also completely false.

The first video on that page is interesting also because it shows yet another instance where Olbermann got it wrong regarding Fox News. Big surprise.
