I feel that Steve Perry is not a strong ROCK singer. Power Ballads? Mid Tempo? He's #1.
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS AN OPINION. IT IS NOT TO BE TAKEN AS FACT.
Your opinion is a terribly bad one.
There are 2 singers on that list that come remotely close, these being Mercury and Delp.
Plant is good, but nowhere near.
Daltry? Don't make me laff.
Tyler just screams his way through everything.
Geddy Lee, absolutely no chance.
DLR, Great frontman and that is it.
Gilmour has one level, the same as Floyd do. Boring.
Johnson, well you really must be stone freakin deaf.
Presley is not even rock. WTF.
THIS is a singer.....This is the ultimate singer.....Who else can do this? Answer...No One. This is as Smooth As Charlize Theron's asshole.

OK if we follow your thinking....
In my opinion, Plant is a screamer, therefore not a rock singer either.
And Daltrey is a shouter, therefore not a rock singer either.
Elvis Presley is rock on your list but SP is not?????
Hmmmmm.
That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it.
Won't get any flames from me.
I wasn't flaming you either.![]()
But do you really think of Elvis as a rock singer???
Check out the '68 Comeback Special. If you didn't think of Elvis as a rock singer before, you will now.

Just had a look at the DVD trailer on youtube - I don't really like the guy, but I do always try to look at things objectively. I appreciate his talent, even though he's not my cup of tea but he's still not really a ROCK singer to me.
Sorry Art.

Quick question - If the lunch was Feb 8th, why did it take this long for you two to post here about it? I would think that little bit of Perry news would have been of interest to his fans regardless of whether there was an upcoming HH interview, or pending Journey release.
Why the delay?

Well if they had logged in here right after dinner saying, "OMG we had lunch with Steve and played a demo for us and it was waaay cool....etc, etc" That would have made it more believable or plausible?
Perhaps Cindy and Lora are mature adults? Adults, who read something Herbie said based on a 15 year old performance and felt the need to set the record straight. I don't take them as liars as your post infers.
SF-Dano wrote:Hey, I just asked an honest question. RedJoe asked a similar question quite a way back in this thread. I am asking again. The fact that there is no answer speaks more than any answer that they would probably give.
I sure know that whenever there is some little blurb about Perry being seen here or Perry in the studio on this day with Pack, or whatever. That news is on this board within hours or a few days, not 6 weeks or 2 months later.
But hey, keep playing defense. No skin off my back. I've had these arguements regarding Mr. P for years on the boards. I think I 'm finally able to post once or twice and leave it at that now. My question was fair and as yet unanswered. I did not call them liars or infer as such. Why not answer the question so all the facts are out here on the board. That is all.

LOL yeah -- unfortunately not everyone expresses them as such.
Speaking of Roth, I saw him recently and I wasn't impressed. I thought he actually sounded really awful live and his face looked frozen or something.

If you had actually named singers that had talent, it'd be a different story...and i would disagree with you (and 99% of the folks here would disagree with you as well).
However, to even utter David Lee Roth, Brian Johnson, Geddy Lee, Steven Tyler as not only being in the same league as perry but a better singer than he exposes you as someone who shouldn't be taken seriously. All of the 4 above mentioned singers are not singers at all. They dont have the technical ability that Perry had. That could hold up in court.
The rest of the names, laughable. If you want to try to pull in talents other than singing, you might have a point with Freddie or Elvis. But the fact remains that this discussion was entirely on whether or not a singer was a good singer...not a good frontman, not a pioneering hip shaker, not a canadian shreaker or a bunch of drummers and/or guitarists that fell ass backwards into the role, because no one else in their band would take up the role.
Sorry, Perry, as far as vocal ability, vocal quality....trumps every one of them.
Lora wrote:After reading everyone's thoughts on the HH interview, we thought we'd add ours. As we have said before, HH gave us our start with the Journey Force which became Fan Asylum, the company we have run with Tim McQuaid for the past 24 years. HH was always good to us as fans and employees. We could (and did) sit and listen to his stories for hours and never be bored. Journey would not be Journey if it were not for HH. The interview brought back many memories of how creative & brilliant he was as a business man.
With that said, many people accept all he says as fact even when it contradicts other credible sources (Steve Lukather, Nuno Bettencourt, David Pack, Joe Benson). HH admits he has had no contact with SP in years so has not heard him sing. We had lunch with Steve a few weeks ago and he played us some recent demos he has been working on. We have heard him sing.....recently. He has definitely not lost his gift - the ability to touch the listener's heart. It is subjective as to whether or not you prefer the soaring vocals of Infinity or the timbre/texture of his voice on later albums, but he has the same amazing voice that beautifully conveys the feel and message of each song.
There are no confirmed plans for these songs, so we haven't commented on this subject before. It's up to Steve as to when/if he is ready to put new material out. After hearing the demos, we can only hope they will see the light of day sometime down the road.
We just wanted to share what we can of our experience with you guys. We have been into music for a very long time and have seen and heard just about everyone. We are not SP cheerleaders/loons. If Steve's voice wasn't up to standards, we wouldn't be making this post now.
HH seems angry because he feels that SP messed up "his formula" and his business model and feels it cost him tons of $$. As "The Force," we were part of that business model and suffered a similar loss as Journey was our primary client at the time. We moved on without bitterness and without playing the blame game. We have kept in touch with some of the Nightmare/Nocturne crew and they also seem to be puzzled by HH's anger after so many years.
We still love Journey's music and are proud of our part of Nightmare & Journey's history.

I was at that show and a high (literally) percentage of the crowd were Grateful Dead fans. I doubt many of them even knew the words to "Lights." Steve was trying so hard to get the crowd into it, but they were all too stoned to notice or care. Everyone was camped out on the lawn with their blankets and the Deadheads were there days before the concert started. We got there early that day but were all the way back to the mixing board. After Journey's set, it took us almost an hour to walk from where we were standing to the back of the crowd, stepping over coolers, blankets, bodies, etc. I actually had fleas on me by the time I got to the car. It was an amazing day and tribute to Bill Graham, but definitely not the usual Journey concert crowd.

Have you seen the video Shadow? 8Poor Steve, in addition to not having his voice, was trying to wake the dead, no pun intended. I felt bad for him. But the band sounded sad..they are that good I guess. It was a perfect tone for a memorial
Rip Rokken wrote:Larry, thanks btw. for those videos. I've heard about this show for years and have always been morbidly curious about it. Now I've finally watched it, and was totally shocked to see... Steve Perry! Hey, I was expecting something horrible, and I heard nothing close. Sure, his voice was a little rough, but he still had range and a heck of a lot of voice control. It was Steve Perry!!!
Has anyone considered the fact that maybe the reason they tuned down so much was because it was a tribute to someone who had just passed? This didn't look like the place or time for upbeat pacing.... They didn't even bring their rhythm section.
Maybe people will think I'm deaf, but I thought it was fine. Sure, his voice was rougher, but he performed like a pro IMO... The saddest thing about that video to me was a crowd who wasn't getting into singing along with "Lights". Maybe they grabbed Perry's voice right off the mixing board and we just couldn't hear them. His vocals sounded kinda isolated from the rest of the noise.
