Neal Asking Arnel to write songs for next album

Postby pineda1 » Mon Apr 21, 2008 8:13 am

Am new here. I thought this is an interesting interview. Arnel talked about his voice collapsing during the Monterey Ca concert and Neal asking him to co write songs for the next album. :)

Welcome to the Journey board - thanks for posting the link!

Sounds like Arnel has his feet on the ground - this is certainly a huge step for him. You never imagine what goes on backstage - he was so scared!

He'll do fine.

But this was interesting:

De Leon, who was present at the interview, says Pineda’s contract with Journey is for three years, with mutual renewal options. The time frame was based on the three-year working visa that the US Immigration and Naturalization Service gave Pineda.

Mutual renewal options? That's interesting! Are all working visas for three years?

Sounds like his vocal cords just fatigued out and lost the ability to vibrate as rapidly as they could.
Here's a fuller translation of what he said happened:

“Bigla na lang siyang bumaba, hindi ko maabot ’yung right key,” he recounts.
“Unti-unti ko lang siyang naibalik after four more songs pero kung baga, pilay na ako.
Dinaan ko sa showmanship. Nagustuhan pa rin ng tao. Ang nanood sa ’min mga 300 people lang,
pero top dealers of Chevrolet cars. It was a corporate show.”

"Suddenly it (my voice) went low on me. I couldn't reach the right key," he recounts
"Little by little I got it back after four more songs, but it was as if I was already playing hurt.
I just carried it off with showmanship, and the audience seemed to enjoy it. They were a crowd of just 300,
top dealers of Chevrolet cars. It was a corporate show."

BTW, anyone who regularly goes to the NEPA-Q wet market has my respect.
Gotta be extra agile, and extra alert down there, especially in the Fish section.
Good prices and great quality though.

As for the "white" comment: that was Arnel.
It really wasn't racist in the the way you think.

It was more like he was saying Neal, Deen, etc. WEREN'T racist, even though they're "white".
because that's unfortunately how most Filipinos view foreign Caucasoids, and particularly Americans:
That such "whites" often mean well and are kind, but by nature consider themeselves superior.
Arnel was only saying he got none of that superiority vibe from his bandmates.

EDITED to ADD:
Uncomfortable to read, yes, but it's better than sweeping racially-based conceptions/misconceptions under the rug.
Arnel was happy to see the sterotype disproven (and after some of the comments online about HIM, it must've been a relief).
The article/interview may help Filipino readers realize that the "white" stereotype and its very racial basis are grossly unfair
and fully deserve to be discarded.

Cheers.

Nice article. They played a corporate gig at Monterey? Must have been kept low key. Nothing leaked out, unlike the ReMax gig.
Arnel has kids from 3 different relationships? Must be the rnr lifestyle, certainly not typical of the Asian culture.

I'm thinking similar to this. They're not on a heavy touring schedule and he's having a problem? Maybe it was random but not a good sign.

All the more reason to catch a few shows while it lasts. :D

Probably not... From all the posts I've read of yours today, you're definatly riding the Neg Wagon when it involves ANYTHING Arnel or Journey. You're looking for Anything you can find to put him or the band down...

How can Arnel hurt? Neal and John have done nothing of substance in the writing department since Perry left.

Agreed. It reads like he's complimenting them and throws out a joke. I doubt he'd bite the hand that's feeding him.

Having gone past the star-struck phase, Pineda has discovered that his new bandmates are regular guys who talk about simple things and have their own dreams. He felt right at home with them, “kahit puti sila.” (even if they are white).

Yeah, it's ok for Arnel to make racist comments....but how dare anyone mention valid concerns about diction or his lack of shared heritage with the band he's fronting!!!

Sorry, given the circumstances, such a comment can't be simply dismissed as poor word choice.

You seem to reek of hatred for Arnel - bashing him everywhere (including leaving malicious comment/s addressed to Arnel himself on youtube) as if it has become you're life ambition to discredit him. These direct personal attacks makes me think you're issue is no longer about your opinion of him being the wrong frontman for Journey, but about his race (the fact that you brought up the issue of racism makes me think so, or where did that come from?). What has he done to you dude? Does being a non-white frontman of Journey stir the much offended resident KKK spirit in you? Admit it (and it's because you're so blinded with prejudice if you don't), the guy's talents as a performer is exceptional, and it is for these that the guy was offered HIS dream job by music/business-smart JOURNEY itself - it's only logical to accept this as the truth noh? But then, for you, it was obviously a crime eh?

C'mon now dude, get a life and channel your energies towards more positive, broad-minded pursuits, life's much better that way ....

Well, in fairness, the racism card was thrown at a number of people here earlier on for even questioning the fact that Arnel was going to be the right choice for Journey.

I see. so being bitter got you fixated on him !
I'm sure AP would be extremely happy that you dedicate your time giving comments (which are mostly unneccessary) on him rather than promoting or saying good things about yo daddy. well, if I was yo daddy, I would be really jealous of the attention you're giving to the other guy.
