I'm guessing they probably gave Journey a lot of money up front for it - and it has to sell big for them to make a profit.

It didn't cost Wal Mart anything to make the record - Think about it....They buy x amount of units from Irving, already made packaged and distributed...Maybe they buy them at $6 each. They are still making a good profit when you consider they now own the master recordings and can sell them however they want (online, etc).

I think it's going to sell really well. Really, the whole thing is masterful marketing. Greatests hits disc includes DSB, following up on he Sopranos finale; people probably will give the new tunes a listen since they are in there and will find out the new guy can sing. Some folks might pop in the live DVD. Some of these will be motivated enough to go to a concert near them. Price is low; CD cover is eye-catching and obviously Journey; Wally World is every-effing-where.

WalMart is North America. They have other partners around the world, but WalMart is 100% American only.

The album has been licensed to Frontiers Records for Europe/UK and at this time there is no licensing in palce for Japan/Asia/Australia.

Andrew is correct. The distribution license to sell at a Wal-Mart store is strictly for the US (even though Wal-Mart is indeed a global retailer).

But I'll give you credit that all of the Filipino's I know are over 40 years old, have careers, kids, family's, tons of problems to deal with on a daily basis and no time at all to dick with music. So perhaps the younger, single generation of Pinoy's will make up the Journey album sales.

There are tons of Filipinos here in Nevada, I would say mostly uneducated foreigners that came over here to the US and is working at casinos. I have many that come to my business on a regular basis sending money back home. It is very hard to even communicate with them, but I would bet they have no idea who Arnel or Journey are.

The big contingency that flocked over to Vegas to see Journey is but a small sampling--when you look at the overall scheme of the population. Sure, Journey appears to have a built-in fanbase (among those Filipino's that are into music), but it is yet to be seen how that will translate into record sales and concert crowds in other parts of the country besides So Cal-Vegas commuting area.

And, not to say I know the minds of all Asians everywhere, but it seems there is a misconception that just because the Filipinos have a natural kinship and excitement over Arnel joining an "American" band, this excitement doesn't necessarily extend over to other groups of Asians in Japan, China, Korea, etc.--nor any of the other Asian-Americans here. After all, we Asians are very competitive people. History has shown that there is more bad blood among this wide diversity group of people (lumped into a 1-name classification) than outside this group.

Not so sure about the language barrier your talking about, it seems all Filipinos that I know both inside the U.S. and in the Philippines knows English well and I've never had an issue understanding and communicating with them. Remember that English is their second language in the Philippines. Yet there are hundreds of Tagalog dialect within the Philippines and not all Filipino's can understand all of them. So interestingly enough, sometimes Filipinos will speek English to communicate with others who speak a Tagalog dialect they are unfamiliar with. At least this is what I've observed at times.

And about the Asian market.....you know that Arnel has a huge following in Hong Kong and China. Plus lots of Japanese love Journey too. Even my friend who was visiting me last month from Japan, while he was visiting me last month, I showed him some recent youtube videos of Arnel with Journey and he even knew about it. The real kicker was when I whipped out some home videos of me singing with Arnel back in the 80's. My Japanese friend went ape-shit, because he knew that I was singing with someone back in the 80's when I knew him then in Japan, but had no idea it was Arnel who I was singing with when I would leave Japan to go singing in the Philippines.

So I would have to say that Japan is going to be pretty involved in selling the new Journey album too. They may even get special Japan only addition like Journey has done in the past before in Japan.

WalMart is huge and they will find a way to sell the album. They may have their issues as a company, but overall they have a pretty successful business model, and I doubt they would have wasted their time with Journey if they did not feel they could push the product. I didn't read fully all the rest of the posts, but while I am sure the folks from Arnel's homeland and those living here are extremely proud of what he has accomplised, that certainly doesn't mean everyone of them is going to be running to Walmart to buy the album.

Arnel has a great voice and the album clips sound decent, but to gauge its potential success off of the fact that there is some radio airplay of a couple songs, I wouldn't count on that. The Augeri fronted band had songs on the radio during the various releases, they certainly were not promoted as much as it looks like the new record will be, but just because it was on radio, didn't mean the masses went running to buy Arrival or Generations. While I didn't know as much about Journey then as I do now, I am sure there were the same DJs saying the same thing about those songs being potential "hits" like they say on a couple from the Youtube clips.

Hopefully it sells enough to get the band some cash, Jeremey some cash for his contribution, and Augeri some cash since he was a writer on FITH.

I apologize if my statement offended you. I was referring to the Filipino customers that come into my store. When they need help in filling out a form (in English), I would say that they are uneducated, since English is a predominate language in the Phillipines. That is not to say I don't get a equal number of Chinese immigrant customers coming into my store needing help in filling out a form to send money to China. Now I can't call them uneducated (they probably can read and write Chinese circles around me), just illiterate in English--similar to that Engrish sign thread that everybody was laughing about last week (which I did find offensive and hitting a little too close to home).

It is a fact that, in Nevada, the hotel and casino industry is the largest employer for low-paying, menial wages. It is also the #1 state, per capita, where foreign immigrants and "uneducated" Americans come to find work.

There are a lot of workers from the Philippines working in meat packing plants in places like Nebraska, I know that for a fact. So they aren't just at places like casinos. All of my family lives in Nebraska and I have a few female cousins who prefer to date Filipino guys and that's where they are all working.

A million copies isn't at all that far fetched. U.S. will sell a ton, the numbers sold in Japan will also be a surprise for us I bet. Again, it's a shame that copies are going to be made and sold illigally in places. Someone did mention something interesting in a earlier post, about how Journey never left the Philippines or something to that effect. That is a very true statement. Cover bands all made Journey songs part of their set lists and clubs continued to play the Journey greatest hits without missing a beat. I see a million copies easily by January 09'....worse case scenario by summer of that year.

Sushi Hunter, you have been abroad and in the music business. You know a lot more about what's going on than me. I was commenting on the perception that with Journey having brought in Arnel, all the Asian countries and people are now going to push them to the top again. Arnel certainly brought and will continue to bring in fans, but didn't SteveA have tons of fans, too? I recall plenty of fans talking & pushing the band out front (The Journey Street Team? Sarah will know) up until the fallout.

What's the question? Did SA have a lot of fans? Yes, but probably not as many as Arnel does.

The only thing I've ever seen the street team do officially was hand out Generations.

Well, I am limited with what I know. I only really know from my first hand experiences with where Arnel came from and what the general census was in relation to Arnel and AMO Band's performance and existance. Actually I know pretty much absolutely nothing on a level of that of the real record industry.

About SteveA, I actually didn't know a person with that name existed until getting on this board, due to Arnel being involved with Journey. Same goes with JSS. Yeah, I've been completely out of the loop for a long time now (for about ten years) after I had to get real and find myself a solid professional career. I just simply got tired of waiting and hoping for miraculous money to fall from the sky into my lap.

You bolded the statement for emphasis, what was that for? Your statement does imply that the tons of Filipinos who come to Nevada are uneducated. Is it because there were about three to six (I'd say it's a realistic estimate) who came to your store could not fill out your form in English? FYI, according to stats (https://www.cia.gov/library/publication ... nt/rp.html for example) 92.6 % Filipinos are literate. The main reason tons of Filipinos migrate to other lands to take on menial jobs despite College degrees is to send their kids to school, that is how important education is to Filipinos.

I hope you're not unfairly hitting back on the Filipinos for that Engrish post that so offended you, it wasn't a Filipino who posted it.

Not sure yet.
I have never doubted Neal and Jon's talent, or their ability to craft a hit single.
But I think many of their decisions since 98 haven't been made in the best interests of the fans or the band.
And yes, that starts with choosing Steve Augeri.

Going by this, and with the rumor that Walmart's initial buy on the Eagle's was 2.5 million pieces, 1 million units is probably Walmart's initial buy. Thus, a Platinum effort by the band would be guaranteed by RIAA standards.

I say that the band can top 1,000,000 due to the WalMart deal, extensive distribution (via WalMart and Frontiers) and the fact there will be no leak to curb advance sales.

It seems that the Arrival album sales were pretty low last time I checked... around 200k maybe? I know at one point they resorted to giving the album away at concerts to try to boost its sales.

1 million units of a 2 CD (not counting the DVD) set = Double Platinum (2 million CD's) by RIAA math.

1 million units of a 2 CD (not counting the DVD) set = Double Platinum (2 million CD's) by RIAA math.

Double Platinum (2 Mill), that would be cool but I think that may be a stretch.

I'm under the impression that the 2 CD and 1 DVD set is the only way this album is being released. Are they also going to have sets without the DVD as well?

You know with all this talk about the upcoming release, I'm sort of looking forward to going to Wal-Mart for the first time.

What I meant was 1 million packages, so yes, in this case, Double Platinum.

I bet it'll be up for download before the June date.

Little bit of quick math: There are around 3000 Wal-Mart stores in the US. It would take each store ordering 334 copies of the CD to go platinum.
