The Official "Revelation" Discussion Thread

Postby venomnation » Sun Jun 01, 2008 10:19 am

Since it's VERY obvious that there will be MANY MANY opinions on this....let's just start a thread to get it all out there in one shot.

What's everyone think of "Revelation" (those of you who, like me, have heard it).

I might be crazy...but I have gone back and listened...and listened...and listened again...then BROKE DOWN the track - and I swear to you..I'm hearing Augeri's voice as a backing vocal on "Faith In The Heartland" - even when I break down the track...it shows up by itself...and sure sounds like him..

Anyone else?

Haven't listened... but don't rule it out being Deen!

My opinion...If I'm using an Andrew McNiece-type scale, I'd give it a 90 out of 100.

Never Walk Away, What it Takes to Win, and After All These Years are all classics, in my opinion. The rest of the tunes are above average except the remake of "Faith in the Heartland" and the instrumental at the end. Arnel's vocals on FITH sound like he was just reciting them off a sheet. The instrumental is boring and I hate the African-style intro. Other than those two, "Like a Sunshower" is perhaps average but the rest of the album is excellent.

I thought about that.

That's why I stuck it into Audition and started hitting it with pass filters...it's not Deen....I can't tell exactly WHAT it is...but I'm VERY MUCH leaning towards them using the original Augeri vocals for backups...and I wouldn't put it PAST them...

I'm convinced... It IS augeri. And it'll take one HELL of a scientific explanation to tell me otherwise - now I'm not saying it's Augeri exclusively...but maybe they didn't re-record the bg vox...maybe they just used the canned stuff from generations.....

I am in love with "What I Needed". Arnel's vocals there are truly amazing. It's a gorgeous song and very Evolutiony. Like a Sunshower and After All These Years are my 2nd favorites. I pretty much love them all.

It's my favorite. I can almost imagine an orchestra playing behind that one. Someone here described it as theatrical, I agree. It's well written music.

I listened to the whole CD 4 or 5 times this morning...from the radio station link that's since been removed. Of course I'll be buying it Tuesday.

Is it pirating to listen to the live stream? I haven't downloaded it, but Journey mgmt. did request them to remove it. I was going to wait until the following weekend to buy it, but after hearing it, I'm going to get it Tuesday. It's that damn good.

Can anyone with a physical copy clarify just how many tracks are included on the dvd?
Would love for "Wildest Dream" and "FITH" to have been included, but am doubtful.

Wildest Dream has to be on there, man. Deen just fucking destroys the drum set at the end of that song. I was pretty smashed, though.

I think you're forgetting about AP's incredible vocal abilities and his ability to vocalize almost any vocalist.

Yep, at times there was definitely an Augeri tone to his vocals on the new release.

Okay, decided to listen to the songs that I've already listened to in some way already (NWA, AATY, WD, FITH). Avoiding the others for sure though.

First song: Faith in the Heartland.

UGH UGH UGH. The original is superior by far. Don't like that Cain's fruity piano is elevated in the mix now, and is plastered over Neal and Deen's prog jam at the end of the song. This is a big Friga-Fried mess! It's like a cut-and-pasted version of the original with some good (but very dry) Arnel vocals slapped on top. The extended intro and amazing end-of-song jam MADE the song for me. DO like Deen's drumming on this one though... very rich and clear. LOVE it. Hate most of the rest, love the original alot though.

Next song: Never Walk Away.

Yummy Neal guitar intro. Arnel's vocals are nice and clear.. I actually hear more Augeri than Perry in his tone too.

STILL sounds like "three tiny Deens singing into a single mic" as another poster eloquently put it, for the background vox. Pretty much my only qualm with the song, right there.

This is definitely one of those put-you-in-a-good-mood type of Journey songs. If I didn't know about Arnel and listened to this song I'd have no clue he was Asian, honestly.

Vintage Neal solo... melodic with a neat tone.. I think he's overdone the "mini shredfest" characteristic of his solos over the past few years though. Still decent.

I like!

Now for: Wildest Dream.

LOVE the riff. Annoyed by the piano though... jeez Frig not every song needs you, okay?

The chorus is definitely unusual. It's wanting to soar but is being held back by something... I like that feel though. Throughout the whole song it just feels like a monster jam wanting to erupt!

Some changes in the music and vocal inflections from verse to verse.. I like. Doesn't have the "copy and paste" feeling alot of songs have from verse to verse and chorus to chorus.

The guitar solo would've been AWESOME had it not been for Friga pawing away doing a rockabilly riff on the keys beneath.

And a big WTF goes out to the distorted vocals. That absolutely ruined the song for me right there. What were they thinking? Could've been an awesome tune without that little robot voice. Ugh. Sounded like they were recording Friga while he was pleasuring himself for that.

DEEN CASTRONOVO ON THE DOUBLE BASS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! and damnit Friga ruins it with keyboards again, i wish he'd stop interposing his gayness over some awesome rock moments in this album....

After All These Years will be my final review for the day.

Finally, the first of these four songs where Cain has fit in seamlessly. Like Neal's weeping atmospheric play over the first part of the song, and Cain is a genius when playing ballads. This is a good choice for a Journey ballad single. Neal's little riff is an earworm... and holy Deen batman! Shades of Steve Smith!

Arnel sounds nothing like Perry... honestly.. it has the legacy sound without being a giant Perry aping. And it actually sounded like "Dixie Highways" to me, not "gypsy highways"! I know it's not, but that would be awesome.

This song sounds like a good country ballad re-done by consummate musical performers. I could hear Lonestar doing this, or someone like that.

Neal is God. 'nuff said. chilling solo..

Arnel's voice is HUGE.. and did I mention I like Neal's trademark lick for this song? nice.

my favorite of the album thus far. AND I HATE BALLADS! :P

I'm sorry, but would Queen get away with a note-by-note rerecord of their classics with a sound-alike singer?

Like the new stuff, but the cover album isn't an "honor" it's an insult.
