And you could say that Jimi Hendrix had three good years...and Jimmy Page five....but that doesn't make them any less extraordinary as guitarists...
From what I've read of your posts Tito it seems you belong to that 'corporate rock' sub-group of fan one often finds in these forums. You prize punctuality, team spirit and a level head above anything else and have no time for any nonsense about 'troubled genius' or mavericks or rock star egomania. As long as a workaday musician shows up when they're meant to and put in some honest- to-goodness hard graft for years on end you're happy. And the fact that no great art ever comes from those types bothers you not one bit....
Or have I got you wrong here Tito?

Art sucks. They should eliminate it from the public schools. It's a waste of time and money. It's a blowoff class. For the professional artist - get a job.

Great career move too. Same thing for Joplin and Cobain.

By art I didn't literally mean paint and brushes Tito...but the philistinism of this reply certainly confirms my theory.

But they were huge stars while they were alive too.

For only a few years. THe thing that makes them icons is their "final act."

But they were huge stars while they were alive too. And the fact that they had troubled personalities helped to give their music real depth and edge. Same with Perry. For all the whining that goes on here about the thousands of days off he's taken and his decision to ride in a limousine alone and that time he was nasty to Smitty and everything else he did that marks him out as different from us ordinary, 9 to 5 schlubs....what made him so fucked up also made him one of the most emotive and soulful singers the world has ever seen.
If Perry had been well-adjusted and contented and as well-behaved as a gold star-winning corporate employee...Journey would never have made it big, I reckon.

Well, even allowing for your claim that Perry only had five good years...those years were a quarter of a century ago..and the music he co-wrote and sang is alive and well...and on tour this summer headlining the nostalgia show with Heart...which you'll presumably be attending.
Say what you like about Perry...but the longevity of his appeal really isn't one of is problems.

Who better than Randy Jackson to judge Arnel Pineda, the controversial choice for new lead singer of the legendary rock band Journey?
Not only is Jackson a judge on American Idol, but for two years he also played bass for Journey.
His verdict on Pineda, who has come from relative obscurity to fill the formidable shoes of former frontman Steve Perry? A big thumbs up – with a footnote.
"The guy can sing, he's great," says Jackson. "But no one ... no one will ever be Steve Perry. He's one of the greatest singers to ever grace the microphone."
Pineda's rise is one of rock's great Cinderella stories. The Journey-loving Filipino – who grew up poor in Manila and was homeless for two years before turning professional singer – was playing cover tunes with a local band when Journey founder Neal Schon ran across extensive live-club footage of Pineda's performances on YouTube.
Because Pineda's YouTube rendition of Journey's "Faithfully" had developed an Internet cult following (given how closely it resembled Perry's own version of the classic), Schon flew in Pineda for a tryout. The singer then joined the band in time for a three-disc album, Revelation, and an international concert tour.
Jackson visited the studio during work on the album. "I heard a few songs," says Jackson. "I think they're doing really well."
As for ex-Journeyman Perry, "He's doing his thing," says Jackson. "Steve's fine. I actually had lunch with him about a month ago. He's working on hot stuff, too."

You, my friend, are a MORON! It is only because of Perry's "5 good and no more than 8 years" that these guys are even making a living, off of songs he wrote and made famous with his voice!

I'm not denying those weren't 5 or 8 great years. However, let's not forget to give the other guys a ton of credit. Also, a bulk of the music they still play is during the Cain Era.
