Art sucks. They should eliminate it from the public schools. It's a waste of time and money. It's a blowoff class. For the professional artist - get a job.

Ding ding ding...we have a winner!
Many of us say that Perry's success with Journey was because of Cain's writing.
(And don't forget that little curly headed guy on guitar.)

later~

Yeah, what songs previous to Cain joining do they still play? They still play "Lights", "Wheel in the Sky", and "Any Way You Want It" and that's it, right?

A lot if you may be too young to remember, but Journey was freakin huge before Cain came around...and imho would've been just fine had he stayed with the Babys (perhaps not as mega-huge,but who's to say? Guess we'll never really know...)

Along with Lights they are 2 of the worst songs in recorded history. Lights might be the worst song I've ever heard. Right up there with Hey Jude.

It's not one of my favorites but I like it a lot. Schon's tone and solo in that song are excellent.

Who better than Randy Jackson to judge Arnel Pineda, the controversial choice for new lead singer of the legendary rock band Journey?

Not only is Jackson a judge on American Idol, but for two years he also played bass for Journey.

His verdict on Pineda, who has come from relative obscurity to fill the formidable shoes of former frontman Steve Perry? A big thumbs up – with a footnote.

"The guy can sing, he's great," says Jackson. "But no one ... no one will ever be Steve Perry. He's one of the greatest singers to ever grace the microphone."

Pineda's rise is one of rock's great Cinderella stories. The Journey-loving Filipino – who grew up poor in Manila and was homeless for two years before turning professional singer – was playing cover tunes with a local band when Journey founder Neal Schon ran across extensive live-club footage of Pineda's performances on YouTube.

Because Pineda's YouTube rendition of Journey's "Faithfully" had developed an Internet cult following (given how closely it resembled Perry's own version of the classic), Schon flew in Pineda for a tryout. The singer then joined the band in time for a three-disc album, Revelation, and an international concert tour.

Jackson visited the studio during work on the album. "I heard a few songs," says Jackson. "I think they're doing really well."

As for ex-Journeyman Perry, "He's doing his thing," says Jackson. "Steve's fine. I actually had lunch with him about a month ago. He's working on hot stuff, too."

I'm pretty sure that he wrote "Oh Sherrie" and that managed to be a top 3 hit. He also had 3 additional solo top 40 hits, that nobody in Journey wrote for him!

What was the saying? School can't be just about reading and writing. If you take art and music out of education, pretty soon they'll have nothing to read and write about.

Great career move too. Same thing for Joplin and Cobain.

Add that scumbag Morrison to that list too. But I like Hendrix. Hulk Hogan's entrance rocked.

Amazing but didn't they all bite the dust at 27? Seems to be some kind of lifespan hurdle for rockers.

It doesn't change the fact that HE contributed to the writing and it was his voice, that made the songs what they became! Journey has continued touring since Perry departed, singing nothing but Perry hits (with the odd "Arrival", "Generations", or now "Revelation" track thrown in). It's an old argument that those of us on opposite sides of the fence will NEVER, EVER agree on. NOBODY will EVER convince me that Journey would have become Journey, without Perry's voice, and nobody will ever convince JoePa that Perry had half as much talent as Augeri (who couldn't win American Idol)!

I don't know. He really only had 5 good and no more than 8 years if you think about it.

Well in my mind he still sounded great in 96 - so i have about a dozen great albums with him singing on and thats more than enuff for me - except......i would like one more album - lower register husky voice - don't care just want to hear more cos he is a great songwriter as well as the best singer i ever heard...........
