That album was called Raised On Radio. Unless you'd like another smoke and mirrors job that can't be performed live a la TBF you're out of luck!

Great career move too. Same thing for Joplin and Cobain.

But they were huge stars while they were alive too. And the fact that they had troubled personalities helped to give their music real depth and edge. Same with Perry. For all the whining that goes on here about the thousands of days off he's taken and his decision to ride in a limousine alone and that time he was nasty to Smitty and everything else he did that marks him out as different from us ordinary, 9 to 5 schlubs....what made him so fucked up also made him one of the most emotive and soulful singers the world has ever seen.

If Perry had been well-adjusted and contented and as well-behaved as a gold star-winning corporate employee...Journey would never have made it big, I reckon.

Way to excuse a guy for being a complete asshole at times. I guess guys like Bon Jovi, Bono (even though I can't stand him), Lou Gramm, Jack Blades, and Paul Stanley are "corporate employees" void of artistic ability because they choose to be great bandmates, take care of themselves, tour and continue to create new music. Go put your face in a fucking wood chipper, dude.

 You an be such an ignoramus, Saint John. The relationship between Lou Gramm and Mick Jones makes the one betwen Perry and Schon look like sweetness and light. Foreigner are no strangers to diva-ish behaviour....

And I love Paul Stanley but KISS have long had a corporate mentality - and their golden era of creativity came when the band was at its most dysfunctional back in the 1970s. Also - Bono is the biggest egomaniac who ever walked the earth.

Jovi? The consumate professional - right up you and Tito's street - and as utterly, grindingly corporate as it gets. And finally Jack Blades...well, if you prefer B-list artists like that to Perry then you really have lost your mind.

Anyway...if you can look beyond your self-righteousness for just a second you'd see that conflict is usually an essential aspect of creativity - and in Journey's case it helped them to produce extraordinary music even if it all imploded in the end.

It doesn't change the fact that HE contributed to the writing and it was his voice, that made the songs what they became! Journey has continued touring since Perry departed, singing nothing but Perry hits (with the odd "Arrival", "Generations", or now "Revelation" track thrown in). It's an old argument that those of us on opposite sides of the fence will NEVER, EVER agree on. NOBODY will EVER convince me that Journey would have become Journey, without Perry's voice, and nobody will ever convince JoePa that Perry had half as much talent as Augeri (who couldn't win American Idol)!

John from Boston

Perry DEFINITELY has something to do with Journey's success. He took them to a new level. Just like Jon Cain did.

Journey's biggest success came when they were essentially one big happy family (1981-83). The vast majority of the turmoil, down time, and excuses not to tour and/or record happened after that.

Matthew- You kick ass dude. I find myself agreeing with SO many of your points. Keep fighting the good fight.

Tito- Dude, you need to WAKE THE FUCK UP, broaden your horizons, and learn to express and explore in life a litle more. It's for your own good. Take art and music out of schools?! How ignorant. I for one WISH I would've taken art and music in school (I didn't) in retrospect.

I regret alot of things that I either did, or didn't do, in my young life.

One of those is getting (or not getting) involved in the arts. I was a closed-minded individual throughout most of school and by the time I actually got into artistic things, it was too late in my development and formation for me to develop a committed interest in much beyond music. I truly, truly wish I could go back and re-do all the elementary art and music classes I coasted through, and take art/music classes in high school.

To me now life is dull without art, and art is dull without life...

You're fucking 20!!! Jesus, quit thinking you're old as dirt... I did that and all it got me was to a point in life at 22 that most people don't think about getting to until they're 30. Please for the love of God enjoy these days... you have all the time in the world to take art & music classes... plenty of time to fuck up and fix it. Plenty of time. Sorry for the preaching rant, but I see that "grow up too fast" gene in you. :)

Hahah. Thanks for keeping me in line. I can't help but feel old sometimes with alot of the crap I've went through and all the stuff I've missed out on. Believe me, every day I live it like my last when I can... BUT... I can't help but stress over my future/past/present alot.

It's depressing me bigtime seeing people my age accomplishing big things and progressing in their lives while I'm still in the same rut I was in a year ago. SUCKS.

It's proven through countless research studies that children exposed to the arts are better all around students. Arts develop the right side of the brain, the creative side. Not all kids are athletes, some of them are gifted in other ways and the arts offers them a chance to excel.

Unplugging the artistic part of yourself also allows for a completely new outlook on life: More things can be enjoyed, partaken of, discussed, created, and beheld. It just makes life, well, better....

I've been there. When I had to leave college to take care of my Mom after a car wreck and was working at my Aunt's carwash for a scrappy $200/week I would get pissed to think that all of my friends were at school, traveling abroad, writing theses, and there I was in Po-Dunk scrubbing cow shit off a tire. I had to grow up fast, I moved out for the first time at 16 when I graduated high school. Long story short... it gets better. I kept chasing what everyone called "pipe dreams" and failed a LOT. But a few years later, here I am with exactly what I want and I wouldn't change a thing.

Advice: go after everything you want with everything you have. And every time you hit rock bottom (which you will), just keep going. Like I said, you have plenty of time... and fortunately that means plenty of time to fail while you get it right. You're still figuring it out... trust me, you're better off than your peers. That path can lead to a jaded cookie-cutter existence. You'll see it. Chin up, grasshopper.
