For me, he had a significant impact. My first Journey show was with JSS, and through there I was inspired to delve through most of JSS's back catalogue with Talisman, solo, and various other projects. JSS's solo work and Talisman are among my favorite rock groups to this day, and several songs have touched me in the way that many famous Journey songs have as well.

Whilst the public at large would likely stare at you blankly at the mention of JSS you will no doubt find a number of posters here who have been influenced by his work - most likely after he joined Journey. Whilst I am not one of them I did like Talisman 7 and look forward to future works. A solid singer and charismatic showman.

The Augeri fronted Journey was the first version of the band I ever heard (via Arrival). Boy was it a nice surprise to discover Steve Perry soon afterward!

Hardly the public at large though good word of mouth is how many good artists that might slip under the radar gain often deserved recognition. I've lost count of how many bands of discovered through recommendations.

I didn't vote yet, but I've been listening to JSS since Prog was sh*tting his diapers, perhaps longer, going back to his (his = JSS, not Prog) days singing for Yngwie. Take a look at my MR screen name. I was one of the few Journey fans that I personally knew who had heard of him before his stint with Journey.

Already had all his work with Yngwie (on vinyl!), and loved his cover of "Shot in the Dark" from some Ozzy tribute album. Had Soul SirkUS also. Also had some of his solo stuff. Since then, have picked up a bit of Talisman and all of Gary Schutt's work.

I also think it's bullsh*t how Yngwie hosed him and had Boals lip-synch to his vocals in promo videos, not once, but twice. JSS should have unleashed the fury on Yngwie, like Yngwie did on his drunken airline rampage.

Nothing against JSS not a basher at all. I personally just don't care for his music much. That being said, I can appreciate the fact that a lot of people really like it.

I hadn't heard of him until he stepped in to sing last year. I am not ashamed of that, he just had not appeared on my radar until then.
I enjoyed the shows very much last year. I was motivated by his energy and I was interested to see what Journey music would sound like with him singing.
I enjoyed reading the posts he made on here.
He seems like a good bloke.
Therefore I was disappointed when he was let go, and I did not like the way he was let go. I have forgiven, but not forgotten that episode.
I listened to the audio clips on his website and I bought the Essential Ballads CD. I love it and play it every day.
That's about it really.
I think he's cool.

But he didn't impact or influence me really. I just enjoyed his live performance and I love the album I have.

Musically, it didn't impact me any differently than anything else I listen to. He is a great frontman and has the kind of show you can take your girlfriend to. I didn't come away floored like I have to buy his album, but I love music and I give him major props for keeping his nose to the wheel all these years and not being bitter about any bad breaks that have come his way. He does appear to have an effect on chics that makes them want to drop their panties which gives him major points in the Rockstar category but since I'm not a woman I can't claim any impact from that other than the insight that he may have some Tom Jones lineage down the line somewhere.

It ws nice to meet some of the peeps here which made for an enjoyable experience.

A good bit, ages ago. I picked up a couple of the Takara albums (most notable Taste of Heaven) that he was on. I know it's not his favorite point in his career now - but it did get me hunting out more of his stuff and more of bands like them - music I thought prior to that stopped existing 5 or 6 years prior.

I went to the chiropractor (also a body builder) and he starts EVERY workout with STAND UP AND SHOUT. long before he met me. EVERYONE I say Jeff Scott Soto to knows ROCKSTAR and STAND UP AND SHOUT. i'm just sayin.

I waited a long long time to find the vocalist that sang what I wanted to hear, or scream, as it were I wanted Steve Perry/Sammy Hagar. Steve can't scream and Sammy can't smooze. JSS is the total package. for me. Neal and JSS together was a dream come true--I listen to Journey to hear Neal shred--that has NEVER been a secret. Soul SirkUS was the ultimate. Journey/JSS came in a close 2nd but we still had to endure the sappy ballads. So, future Journey with JSS would have been heaven. But, alas, not to be. I found it very comforting to discover Howie--a guitarist, other than Neal, who can hold my interest and play what I want to hear. I LOVE the guitar sound on LOST IN THE TRANSLATION. I envisioned that future Journey with JSS would have this same raw guitar sound, like Soul SirkUS, which, IMHO, is where Neal really really shines--on the gritter side.

I don't think JSS influences my musical taste--JSS embodies the vocal music that is in my head.

My 2 cents...

Jeff is no doubt a talented singer and an engaging preformer, as well as being extremely accommodating and accessible to his fans. I haven't seen him live, but the word is that his shows are always a lot of fun.

However, I don't feel that he was the best long-term choice for Journey. If not for his association with Neal via SoulSirkus, it's highly doubtful he would have been the one called in to cover for Augeri. Again, by most accounts, he did a very admirable job filling in the live dates, especially considering the very short notice and time frame he was given.

Now, here's where things get murky: Did Journey ever intend him to be a long term replacement, press releases to that end notwithstanding? Only Journey truly knows. I'm aware several here claim insider info, but really, unless you were present for every conversation the band had, as well as privy to each member's private thoughts, no one outside of the band, and probably really only Neal and Jon, truly know.

What is clear is that when Journey decided to let him go, most here where very unhappy with the way it was handled. A fair number seemed to feel that maybe he wasn't the best long term solution, but were still upset that he appeared to have been used, then simply tossed aside.

It was at this point that the bashing of Neal and Jon reached all time highs (or lows), and as a result, Jeff's accolades began to soar into the stratosphere. I realize Jeff won some people over at the live shows, but with the bulk of the praise coming after he was let go from Journey, it gave the appearance that much of it was a backhanded slap at Journey - fair or not.

In the end, Jeff should be judged solely on his performances, on record and on stage. How he was treated by Journey (or even Yngwie for that matter), should earn him no extra points.

I would say seeing him with Journey, and attending the many concerts I did sort of rekindled my love for rock music. I hadn't seen a concert in about 20 years before I attended my first Journey/Def Lep concert. And initially I was there to see Def Leppard. His energy on the stage just had me wanting to see them again. I think I personally kind of put music on hold for a lot of years, busy when my kids were little. Seeing Jeff and Journey reminded me how important music always was to me in the past and it has been responsible for me getting to know a great little group of friends who enjoy the same music. That year was such a fun ride for all of us. So I will give him credit for at least influencing my desire to listen to music, some that I NEVER would have listened to before that and for re-introducing me to Journey, who I always loved in the Steve Perry years. That has just pushed me into wanting to attend as many nostalgia concerts as I can and has made me love and appreciate live rock more now, than I ever have in my life.

True that, was great to hear Eyes of Love a couple of weekends ago. EOL kicks ass LIVE!
From what I recall the only cover at these shows was Crazy (which is fine by me, much much prefer JSS' rocked up version to Seal's mellow one), and of course the funky medley. Hmmm, maybe he does read peoples opinions, etc.

There is not too many artists I'll cross the border to catch a live show of, but JSS is definitely 1 of only 3!

I liked his soulful delivery (much like Perry's, ya you heard that right Dan) but he had his own unique style instead of trying to sound just like Perry. Never got the chance to see him w/Journey, except for a few boots from that tour. Then I started looking into his catalogue of work, lots of gems in that vast catalogue. Lost In The Translation and Talisman 7 are two of very few cds I have that I let play all the way through without skipping any. I guess like the other Deb I like that you can get both hard rockin' and soulful from JSS. And unlike Texafana, I like that his catalogue is diverse and not pigeon-holed in one genre. I think too many people see JSS as mainly just metal or hard rockin and haven't delved into his catalogue to see he's got a major soulful and funky side too.

As far as impacting my musical tastes.........not really. As much as I like his soulful, motown, rock and funky sides I still can't much get into the metal Yngwie and Redlist stuff......save for maybe a couple Yngwie songs. Love his Talisman and solo stuff though. My musical tastes have always been the same.....if I'm not hearing a ballad delivered with soul or a rocker delivered with passion.......it just doesn't hold my interest.

As much respect as I lost for the Journey guys with the way they handled things......I can't hate on them......they introduced me to the talents of one of my top 3 vocalists.

And after reading Andrew mention that JSS' new cd is a real singer's cd, I'm REALLY looking forward to it. When it comes to opinions/reviews, I put a lot of stock in Andrew's opinions......cuz I know darn will he's got stellar taste in vocalists. I agree with so many of his reviews......LOL I found myself repeatedly saying "yes" while reading his TMG one.

Perry was the real deal and moved them from the obscure to top sellers. I saw Augeri once and said this is awful in comparison. Then comes Jeff. A real musician & writer . Maybe that was too much talent for the band. Now I will not pay anymore for another sound alike . It has nothing to do with Arnel, but his bosses and their credibility at this point as posing as Journey!
