Holy CRAP!! I think "mental issues" doesn't begin to cover it!

Something like this happened a couple years ago around here although not to this extent. A passenger stabbed a bus driver and a semi pro football player on his way into town saved the day. I rode a bus ONCE when I was 11 with my cousin to Minneapolis. It took us six hours to get there in what would have taken less then four in a car and the FREAKIEST damn people ride those buses and this was over 25 years ago! I'd never even DREAM of getting on one now!

Jeeeezuz H!!

Witnesses said the suspect was tall, large and wearing sunglasses, even though it was dark.

I'm sorry... SUSPECT?
I'm thinking its ok to go ahead and presume guilt in this situation.

So much for theory that ridding guns reduces crime. Too bad driver wasn't armed.

Absolutely chilling!

This poor guy was sitting in the seat in front of the attack. Warning: his description is graphic.

Other reports are saying there were in fact children on the bus, as young as 6 years old. I can't imagine the trauma they went through (and probably will for a long time).

You know - I realize this kind of thing could happen anywhere - but it does make me think twice about taking the Greyhound any more. I've done it a few times, between Alberta and BC since I moved here (usually to avoid having to drive through the mountains in the winter). There have been times, especially on the overnight routes, that I've felt a little uncomfortable with some of the 'clientele'. Last trip the woman behind me had a 10 hour conversation with an invisible friend next to her, and reached through the seats to poke me at just about every stop to ask 'are we in Vancouver yet'??? (After about the 3rd time I wanted to lie and tell her yes so she'd get the hell off the bus).

Anyway - pretty gruesome - poor kid was less than an hour from home.

The authorities should have shot the guy as soon as they got him off the bus. People like him don't deserve to go through the justice system.

Unfortunately Canada doesn't have the death penalty. The cops should have popped the guy though.. they've done it for less. Probably too worried about their "reputation" with all the deaths the RCMP have had to deal with this past year.

I know that I used to take the bus quite a lot when I was going to school. Many times I had to put up with drunk violent Natives which made the trips all the scarier. I guess thats what happens when you live in a community that has five Reservations around it, but still, wait until you get off the bus ok?

It doesn't help when the bus depot in Edmonton (where this poor guy got on) is a dumping ground for homeless and those that have issues with drugs and alcohol. Its not exactly in the inner city, but it is within a 20 minute walk of it.

I know this is an extreme case, but just how many fights, threats, etc have NOT been reported or have been ignored because the guy or gal was "drunk"? How many of these were laughed off?

I'm sure we will hear more stories in the following weeks of other 'ordeals'.

Funny thing is, if this would have happened in the US, more then likely the guy would haven't have made it off the bus. I'm sure he would have been shot dead as soon as he started stabbing.

RIP Tim, you didn't deserve this. May you find peace.

This case has just taken even a more bizarre turn:

A Chinese immigrant who stabbed, gutted and beheaded a fellow passenger on a bus traveling across Canada last week also cannibalized the victim and pocketed his nose, lips and ear, a court heard Tuesday.

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton faces a second-degree murder charge in the horrific case.

The victim has been identified by friends as Tim McLean, a young man of 22 years who was returning home to Winnipeg from a job as a carnival worker in Edmonton in Western Canada.

In his second court appearance, Li was overheard saying "please kill me."

Prosecutors said police observed him eating pieces of his victim when they surrounded the bus on a desolate highway about 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Winnipeg immediately following the July 30 attack.

Li had decapitated the victim, sliced off an ear and bits of flesh and was taunting police and bystanders with the head, refusing to leave the bus and screaming "I have to stay on the bus forever," the Crown said.

According to reports, McLean had been asleep, his cheek pressed against the window of the bus when his assailant struck suddenly near dusk, stabbing him repeatedly in the chest with a "big Rambo knife."

The other 34 passengers and the driver were jolted by "blood-curdling screams" and fled, bracing the door on their way out to trap the assailant inside the bus, witness Garnet Caton told public broadcaster CBC.

McLean was stabbed 20-40 times, said prosecutor Joyce Dalmyn.

After a three-hour standoff, Li tossed a knife and scissors out of a broken window of the bus, jumped out and was subdued by police, the court heard.

In his pants pocket, police found several body parts hacked from the victim's face, said Dalmyn.

According to reports, Li worked mostly solitary jobs, including delivering newspapers and as a church custodian, since his arrival in Canada in 2004.

People who knew Li said the accused had showed signs of mental health troubles in the years leading up to the attack, but refused help.

His estranged wife told police he'd once been hospitalized for four days for strange behavior, the court heard.

Li did not speak in court. He nodded yes when asked by the judge if he understood the seriousness of the charge and shook his head no when asked if he wanted a lawyer.

"He doesn't seem to want to engage in any discourse," his interim defense lawyer Randy Janis told AFP after meeting with Li to try to convince him to accept legal counsel.

"His few responses are non-verbal, there's very little eye contact. Occasionally, he'll nod or shake his head to answer," he said, describing Li as withdrawn.

The judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the accused before his next scheduled court appearance on September 8.

Someone sent me the link to the police radio clip from when they were watching his movements on the bus - I don't know if it's still out there on the internet or not (I refuse to look, don't want to hear it again). They (RCMP) knew and talked about what he was doing on that bus during the 'stand-off'. Unbelievable.

Thanks for the added info. I only hear blips on the tv about it. I guess they are afraid of copycats. They need more security. I agree alot of times normal people ride the bus, but alot of weird ones do too. If security is that lax, people need to stop riding till they make it safer.

Totally creeped that my daughter and her boyfriend took the greyhound a couple times last year between Calgary and Edmonton (daytime trip) before his family transferred back to Calgary......even though I realize this could have happened any where at any time. Freaked out at the randomness of it and his calm demeaner in such a grissly act. It's like something out of a horror movie. The poor people on that bus and the victims family are going to live with that for the rest of their life. :(

I don't know, that Garnet kid is a hero in my books, along with the bus driver and the trucker that stopped to help. Anybody's first instinct would be to flee.....when you see a guy that crazy wielding a rambo knife. Sounds like that Garnet kid tried to get the guy beside him to help but he froze. At least Garnet got everybody off the bus and locked the killer in until RCMP arrived........there could have been more victims?
