Trying to like the songs, but just don't! I'll take Talisman over this any day. The only song that I liked was "21st Century". Other than that one, I wouldn't buy any songs from the album. JMHO. :(

did you read that new interview? he said 'Talisman in the future', loosely. that would be sooo cool. I've GOT to see Talisman live. in TEXAS!!! well, ok, that's pushing it maybe but at least in the US!

Sure hope so, it's my favorite too. That one kicks it whether it's live OR studio! I love 'em all, but then I'm all about the funk & soul. Great vocals! I knew these were going to be quite a departure from his heavier side and I love this stuff. :D

None of Jeff's solo stuff comes even close to Talisman . As great as Paulo is in songwriting, I think Marcel Jacob blows him away. Marcel writes songs fit for Jeff's voice. That's what's makes Talisman sound so good.

Thanks and Yep! Such soul! :D

B, not really that into the real heavy Engwie stuff, and I love Talisman! But I also love the more pop/soulful/funky side too. Best of both worlds baby!

Yngwie is not THAT much heavier than Talisman. I think the early Yngwie songs sounded heavier because Jeff had a rougher voice back then. Plus Yngwie started to write some radio-oriented songs.

I mean, wouldnt you like to hear Jeff sing some of these awesome Yngwie songs :

Ok, ya got me there. I never followed Engwie's stuff, so I thought all of it was heavier. It's never been about the shredding for me (sorry Deb2  ) that's why I like Talisman so much, more a hard rock/funky edge to them. Just give me some great vocals, bass and drums! Ok and maybe a little guitar.  And soul and lots of it, I'm much more into the motown influenced vocals!

why do we have to pit jeff's songs against each other? you like the harder stuff, deb likes more of the soul & i like my own selection of his songs. it's all good.

Talisman any day. I'd pay to see them almost anywhere in the U.S. And I'm sure Soto would be ecstatic to see me again.

I never got to see Jeff at all. I have only heard the stuff on youtube that were recorded badly. I listened to a couple of tracks and I think the man can sing quite well. Now I still like Perry more, but he is not bad. I would buy his albums. :)

Conflicted.

Postby finalfight » Sun Aug 10, 2008 5:43 am

I don't do introspective so this is really not for me this time. I'm surprised I don't like it but based purely on the samples this is in my opinion poor man's Prince content wise (not vocally, Jeff is the superior singer) and not at all what I personally expected. More than anything I don't like the lyrical content but I am sure it will find a connection with many and the songs should play well in a more intimate live setting.

To my ears Jeff's voice also sounds different here - deeper, a little road weary perhaps? Whatever it is I like the tone but personally I would love JSS to have come out with a mind blowing, vocally acrobatic AOR/Melodic album that blew Revelation out of the water. Maybe next time..?

Dare I say it the whole thing reminds me of the end of the movie Rock Star where the rocker turns his back on 'rawk' and ends up playing melancholy 'grunge' in a smokey dimly lit club. A brave departure then?

I should add that the last material I heard with JSS was (ignoring Winds of Freedom) Talisman's 7 - which I loved. :D

I also wonder if a change of image will happen to promote this album? I think it would help Jeff reach a much larger potential audience if he is dressed more appropriately for the material. Knee length shorts on 42 year old singing these more adult orientated songs just doesn't compute. I definitely feel he might be better served to get some decent marketing and image advice. Despite my own personal reservations - with the right kind of promotion this could be really big for JSS. My fingers are crossed.

I'll definitely still buy a copy to support Jeff's work and give it a fair go - that's all anyone can ask. Maybe I will find the new material to be a grower.

lol...it's an improvement for sure!!! That said, Behshad gave me a Talisman DVD that really kicks ass. :) I think Talisman would be the perfect band to open for The Scorpions.

Very different approach from Jeff Scott Soto. I am very pleased he didn't try to do the Journey CD he never got to make. The clips are really good. "Our Song" reminds me of what I have discovered from his post Malmsteen past, which is all I really knew about until stumbling across this board. The rest is kind of funk/contemporary sounding. Suits him very well and you can tell he is in his element. This music is very good, and I would give it a shot. I'm sure I will check it out when it is made available. Thanks for the link to it. Finding things like this is the reason I pop in from time to time. :)

Yngwie is not THAT much heavier than Talisman

Yngwie with Joe Lynn Turner was good too.

after have being a fan for 20 years, it's only natural for one to compare an artists different eras and projects ,Poon:) I never said anything negative about his solo stuff .also it doesn't have anything to do with hard vs. soft songs either. Talisman has released many great slower songs...I enjoy Jeff's solo stuff a lot , but I enjoy Talisman more simply because I think no one can write songs as perfectly for Jeff's voice as Marcel Jacob does,,,
Just makin sure you don't think by comparing them I'm putting Jeff's hard work down:)

INTENTIONALLY....this album is not for Yngwie, Talisman, Journey or even my past solo album fans!! Read the long interview I already did with Andrew, this board & most on this site will not like, understand or accept this album as a Jeff Scott Soto album, because it simply isn't. It's a JSS album which is aimed at a completely different market which I expected. Most fans of classic rock or their favorite artists doing classic rock want only that as much as contemporary artists today will someday be deemed 'oldies'. I'm reaching for something new, something different, something that appeals to more than my own age group or long time listeners, Talisman or any of the other bands I have ever been in won't have that chance again, all we can do is try :)

Part of the beauty in being an artist is the perogative to reinvent yourself. It's a good thing. I look forward to hearing the whole album! :)
