Saint John's review of Lukather's show in Palatine

Postby Tito » Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:03 am

Tito and I decided to go see Steve Lukather and his band last night. I have to start by saying that I was a bit apprehensive and had thoughts of Soul Sirkus running through my head. That band was utter shit and I was hoping that history wouldn't be repeating itself. A nice crowd of about 200+ settled in and watched the opening act...a local guitarist whose set we ate through. I give the appetizers 2 dongs down. Laughing

On to the show. Luke and his band came out and I must start by saying that I knew one song all night. It was a Tubes song that he wrote or co-wrote. Didn't matter. Lukather's band delivered big time. They jammed all night, were very tight and had some really cool grooves. He abvoided turning it into the Styeve Lukather show and jammed within the framework of the band. The guy is an amazing guitarist. He was clearly not as melodic as Neal and probably not as fast, but he did seem to be a better fit than Neal at playing heavier music. He seemed more comfortable and had some kick-ass jams. His band was fucking outstanding...these guys could really jam. Steve really seemed to enjoy what they were accomplishing out there.

There were a few people of interest there. I saw Joe vana and his nice looking family walk in with Frankie Sullivan of Survivor. Tito and I thought about going up to Joe, but he was with his family and a friend or two so we decided to leave him alone. Joe seemed to be enjoying the show as did his family. Frankie didn't stick around too long or he went backstage, I don't know. My guess is he got pissed about something   :P Another cool person to see was Andrew Blake the former lead singer of 7th Heaven. He was there with a few guys from his band and a few nice looking ladies...per usual. I had a few questions I wanted to ask him, but again decided that he looked busy enough.

The real highlight of the evening was the whacked out retard next to Tito. This guy looked like he just escaped from the asylum. He was out of rhythm, sweating profusely and clapped at the oddest times. I cracked up more than a few times at this fool. He did one of the loudest drum fills on his stomach I've ever heard, and ironically it was actually quite good!!! Other than that the guy was generally an obnoxious asshole that would probably best serve humanity locked up in a really dark place.

On to lipping...and believe me I was looking for it!!! Luke had cancelled 3 shows because of an illness and he admitted he was pretty beat up last night. His vocals were great...surprisingly good singer. I wanted so badly to belt out a "Lipkather!!!" but the guy kicked ass up there on vocals. These guys were what Soul Sirkus wasn't. They had direction, a variety of songs and sounds, and had chemistry. Soul Sirkus had none of those. Soto is a better vocalist than Lukather, but Lukather's band wins easily in every other category. Now, that's not to say they were more talented. It's just that Lukather's band seemed to have an identity and chemistry that SS never seemed to find. If you're into some really deep grooves, awesome guitar playing, heavy rhthym sections and some Rolie-like keyboard playing (at times), these are your guys.

Closing out the show, Luke admitted he was apprehensive about attendance and was glad to see the 200+ people there. He had to come out for 2 encores when it seemed like he only was prepared to do one. The crowd just kept screaming for more. He had some really hardcore fans there and had to wipe a tear from his eye the second time he came out. He said "I gotta admit. I wasn't expecting this. You guys are great, man." Very cool moment and you could tell it was sincere. I'm glad I went to the show. I had a great time, saw some fabulous musicians and one heck of a band. Luke stuck to his guns, too...no Toto songs (unless they were deep cuts that I didn't recognize). He also said that he loves the guys in Toto and the ending of their band was on GOOD terms. He respects them all and had a blast the 30 years he was with them. Called them his brothers and said he loved them. Again...seemed very genuine. I'd see these guys again in a second.

Saint John's overall score is 89 out a 100...a solid B+. These guys rocked.

Sounds like they stuck to their stuff only and didn't load up with covers. Props to Luke.

My personal review:

Dave Uhrich opened the show. We were tardy getting there so we unfortunately missed a good chunk of his set. The guy is an outstanding guitarist, I actually like him more than Luke. I haven't seen him perform in probably 7 years. SUGGESTION FOR ANDREW: Book him for MR Fest 2.

When Luke took the stage, I was surprised by the attendance, I would say somewhere in the 180-200 range (more than Soto drew in his last 15 domestic dates, sorry I had to throw that in there). I think Luke was impressed by the turnout as well. We actually finished eating during the first song as we couldn't get any service from the waitresses forever. I thought this was a conspriacy of some sort.

Although I wasn't familiar with any of the songs, except Talk to Ya Later by the Tubes, it was a good time. I enjoyed most of the songs, I believe "Ever Changing Times" was the best song (I think that's the title). The band was very good. The drummer (Valentine?) was good, the keyboard player and bass player did their job well, and the other guitarist (Zee?) did his job and could sing very well. As Saint John stated yes they were live as can be. No lipping. Lukather even made a crack early on about pro-tools in the back.

As far as the fans, yes the guy next to me helped make the show entertaining. The drum fill on the stomach was impressive. I had to leave the area I was laughing so hard. The other problem, this was a total sausage fest. I am not exaggerating when I say, there were only 10 females (at most) in the crowd. So much for Toto (Lukather) being a chick band. It's a guy band apparently.

I don't know why Saint John made the comparasion to Soul Sirkus, but SS was good and I still liked THAT show better. However, a piece of advice for Luke, don't do it! Don't do any projects with Soto. You're fine by yourself.

If you're a fan of Lukather, you will love the show. If you're not necessarily a big fan and just want to see a good show, I would recommend it for the price.

I'm seeing Luke friday... hopefully he's healthy by then. You say you only knew one song all night. I'm assuming this means you're not familiar with Ever Changing Times then? I'm really hoping for a lot of cuts from that album. I'll be posting my own review Friday night.

Here's the setlist and a short review from another poster (LtVanish) in the Toto forum:

I went to the show last night in Palatine and boy oh boy was it excellent. I was a little nervous a few days ago when I heard that the last 3 shows were cancelled due to Luke coming down with a throat infection. During the show you could tell he was still a little under the weather, but he was in good spirits. His band is excellent and you can tell they were all having a blast. "Hold on a sec while I go backstage and set all the pro-tools" Luke joked....."As you can see everything but my prosthetic penis is real up here on stage" Luke also cleared up all the Toto stuff by saying that he wishes nothing but the best for everyone and that those days were the best of times. He compared it to having a child at the age of 50 being different than having a child at 20. As for everything else that was going on it still hasn't completely sunk in, I was in awe last night watching Luke tear it up. He seemed very touched with the crowd that showed up, and after chanting Luke Luke Luke for 3-4 mins he came back out for a second Encore, this time by himself and finished the night with "The Road Goes On" Here is the set list for the night

Drive A Crooked Road
Twist The Knife
Ever Changing Times
Live for Today
How Many Zeros
Stab in the Back
Hate Everything About You
Song For Jeff
Fall Into Velvet
Never Walk Alone
Talk to Ya Later (Tubes)
Tell Me What You Want
Party in Simon's Pants (with dedication to Simon Phillips)
Jammin' with Jesus
Wings of Time
Hero With 1000 Eyes

Encore:
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Road Goes On

Glad you guys had a good time! I was looking for Joe Vana there, but once the show started I was dialed in to Luke's playing. He did do 2 Toto songs 'Live for Today' from Turn Back and "The Road Goes On" from Tambu. I posted the set list on the Toto forum.

Also if you haven't picked up "Ever Changing Times" i would highly recommend doing so. It is by far his best solo album.

Thanks!

I enjoyed Luke at Paradiso.
Sort of a bluesy eclectic jazzy meld.
