My pleasure, SJ.

I had been leaning towards having no interest in seeing this tour without Anderson, but Benoit David, the "understudy," IS pretty good. Here he is performing with Close To The Edge, the excellent Canadian Yes tribute band he's a part of:

I may have to go see a show just out of curiosity...

I wonder if these guys will get equal pay or sort of be on half salary, like they came through a temp agency?

Anderson is a unique singer and I'm a huge Yes fan (though I do really like the "Drama" album referenced in the interview). I can't imagine him not being there and it seems like he is intent on coming back once he recovers.

I didn't either at first, but then I thought about the songs they might do now that Anderson and Rick Wakeman aren't there to veto them: Stuff from Drama and Relayer, and maybe "The Ancient" off Topographic Oceans, which I know Squire and White have mentioned in interviews as having wanted to play for some time.

If they realize no "casual fans" will come to a Yes gig without Jon, they might as well go balls out and play for the diehards, and find tunes they've rarely played instead of just doing "And You And I" and "Roundabout" for the 5,000th time.

I think Anderson's voice is very impressive when you look at how old he is. I saw a clip of him on youtube and I just couldn't believe how great his voice has held up over the years. And when you say recover, what do you mean? What's going on with Anderson?

You are the only one I've ever heard put Howe down for his playing. Is there anyone else that thinks the same? Do you have quotes from other guitarists about how bad Howe is?

I see YT starting an audtions only section and charging bands a talent finder's fee. Or, some record label having their own piece of YT.

You have got to be smoking something. I've seen him play solo, with Asia, and with Yes. He is flawless. In fact, he did a one-hour acoustic set in between Asia sets at Toad's Place in New Haven in 1993 that is STILL getting talked about - and I saw it first hand. Put down the crack pipe.

Well, I couldn't care less about other guitarists. I'm not trying to establish a concensus here! LOL.

It's my personal opinion as both a music listener and a guitarist of over 22 years, that Howe is a fumble finger, arthritic dope of a guitarist with an awful execution of notes. His poor intonation, jerky vibrato, ugly note choice and lack of fluidity are all issues for me.

I will also agree that my opinion of Howe is most certainly a minority opinion. I happen to feel that Trevor Rabin (when he was in Yes, he admitedly does not play that much these days) could play circles around Howe. He probably still could, on the fact that Howe plays like he's got collosal arthritis and has sounded that way since the late 70s.

The spice girls still get talked about, So does Britany Spears and the recently reunited New Kids on the Block.

That doesn't make them good musicians.

Same applies to Howe. My opinion of him is as a guitarist from my ears as a guitarist. Musically, he is the weakest link in that band...and has been since inception. Squire, on the other hand, is one of the greatest bassists to ever play the instrument, behind Billy Sheehan alone. But Howe's playing is simply reprehensible to my listening ears.

More power to you if you like him...I think he's got the execution of a 10 year old guitarist...and has had poor execution since the mid 70s, when he seems to have developed hand-dexterity problems.

He certainly has a halting style but is it because that's the way he wants to play or just because he can't? I've heard him play with much more fluidity in some situations, such as in Asia. As far as his vibrato, I guess I've never really noticed but I'll try to remember to listen for it next time.

I will also agree that my opinion of Howe is most certainly a minority opinion. I happen to feel that Trevor Rabin (when he was in Yes, he admitedly does not play that much these days) could play circles around Howe. He probably still could...

Rabin is/was a great guitarist. I just didn't think his style fit with Yes very well at all, though there is certainly some good material, especially, in my opinion, on "90125" and "Talk".

...on the fact that Howe plays like he's got collosal arthritis and has sounded that way since the late 70s.

I have Yes' 35th anniversary DVD and I thought it sounded like the whole band had arthritis with the exception of Wakeman. Dude still sounded good there. Otherwise, it just felt like they were lumbering through most of those tunes.

Thinking about it some, yes. I guess the leverage would be there for discussing terms for the next contract.

Absolutely agreed. It would certainly give the singer a big bargaining chip for the next contract. Big, yet fair.

Granted, Steve Howe is one trippy-looking dude.

But there are plenty of guitarists (and other musicians, for that matter) who could be viewed as less than aesthetically pleasing (anyone here ever see Robin Trower make his "guitar face"?).

That said, anyone who calls themselves a "guitarist," and then refers to Howe as a "fumble finger, arthritic dope of a guitarist" might as well be the pope proclaiming that God sucks, and should be replaced.

I offer this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErI2NW18cDQ

Yeah...Howe sucks. What a hoot, lol...

My opinion, so fuck off, eat shit....and die slowly. technically he is the least 'brilliant' guitarist from the 70s....and that's being kind.

Look, you can not enjoy his playing but you can't say he sucks. That's just complete asininity. The guy is technically skilled and has maybe the most diverse background of any guitarist of his era when it comes to the influences/styles he plays. Not to mention a very unique sound.
