I know people in unions who asked for the portion of their dues back that would be used for political purposes they didn't support (there is a law that is out there, but I can't remember what it's called) and were effectively black listed, and recieved a bunch of threats etc etc.
Nasty business. The big unions are some of the most corrupt organization in this country.
They're not any more corrupt than the companies they supply workers for. They're all in bed with each other. The union echelon are getting their pockets lined and the company is getting favorable labor contracts in return.
I look at the company I work for and my department is union and then I look at other nonunion workgroups for other companies, and we still have vastly better working conditions than them. So, for me, they're at least doing something.
If it were left up to Corporate America, we would all be earning $7.00 an hour, while they pay themselves millions and millions in bonuses.
Just after 9/11, our workgroup agreed to take a concessionary contract that reduced our pay and benefits by over 30%. All to save the company from what they called certain bankruptcy. The day after an agreement was reached, the company echelon approved for themselves millions in bonuses and a bankruptcy proof retirement. What they failed to realize, is that we hadn't formally ratified that contract yet. So we told them to go fuck themselves. It wound up being that the CEO resigned, the bonuses were rescinded, but I think they still got their bankruptcy proof retirement plan. That company is AMR. The most viciously corrupt company I've ever seen.
They tell us that their labor costs are the highest in the industry. All the while, we're one of the lowest paid. That's nothing but mismanagement.
We're under contract negotiations now, and they offered us a contract Thursday that was completely concessionary. This after they paid themselves millions in bonuses again back in the spring. It's no secret that everyone is watching as these fat asses continue to rob companies blind with outlandish wages, bonuses and stock options.
So when someone accuses labor unions of being corrupt, I laugh, because there's not a more corrupt group anywhere than those heading up the fortune 500 companies of this country. The wage disparity between management and labor continues to deteriorate. When I hired on 25 years ago, the CEO made 10X more than someone in my department that was topped out paywise. Now, the CEO makes over 100X more.
I know telling these things to Republicans just makes them snicker under their breaths, but I didn't have the ability to further my education to become a corporate thief, so I handle bags for a living.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.
