Tree, in 1998, McCain made a joke: Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno. It was at a GOP fundraiser and was insinuating Hillary was a lesbian and was a cut to Chelsea's looks.

RossValoryRocks, there was an opinion piece written by Maureen Dowd regarding the inappropriate joke about Chelsea Clinton being ugly and McCain's apology. He ADMITTED he said it. It was in the New York Times.

The title of the article is: Liberties; The Joke's On Him.

There is no video of the Chelsea remark.
It is accepted as common knowledge, just like McCain calling his wife a "see you next tuesday."
I always thought McCain was famous for his ribald sense of humor and that it added to his overall maverickyness.

LOL...dude, I'm not level headed. At times I can be down-right explosively uncompromising. However, I'm no longer looking to get into verbal fistacuffs with people online anymore. I've traded rounds with almost everyone here and I do find, at the end of the day...all it does is boil the bile up to the base of the throat and make dinner go down less easy. So arguing over things with attacking the people arguing isn't fun. So to that end, people here should notice that while my usually filthy mouth is no less vulgar...I rarely if ever direct it towards anyone on the forums.

Regarding politics....I find it hard to believe that there are still republicans that feel the party is solid anymore. Yes...I'm a republican....but to people that are republicans for the sake of the party are morons. Voting for the guy with an R after his last name doesn't ensure anything other that either the continued execution of failed government or election of people not beholden to their party's ideals. If you think about it, that's exactly what has happened these days. We have a current leader of the republican party who has been a failure in all senses of the word....and the RNC looks to replace him with someone that's worse.

I've had this argument with a handful of friends IRL. One in particular has ridden my ass hard for not voting for McCain in an effort to prevent Obama from getting into office. My response to him is that a vote for McCain emboldens the RNC to continue failed policies and backing of poor politicians. He will get frustrated and ultimately complain that I'm not a true conservative...lol...as if that's going to scratch my guilt.

I retort that as a conservative, it is he who's got the issue, not I...as conservatives are believers of capitalism and free markets. The democratic process is the GRANDEST example of a capitalist free market. Your vote is your exercise of purchase. By voting for a sub-par piss-poor excuse of a republican as McCain, you are essentially forfeiting your *right* to exercising capitalism in the market of politics. You're taking the crap the seller is force feeding you and buying it, because you've been given shit for alternatives. I'm sorry. That doesn't fly anymore with me. I think true republican/conservatives (and some have gone this way, thankfully) should resist their party's urge to swallow a stinky load from the RNC in the form of John DisDain. Only through the act of NOT BUYING will the next offering be a better choice.

Once I came to the above solution, I enabled and freed myself to look at the political process with an open mind. My wife and I both took a LONG hard look at both Obama's platforms and McPain's platforms...relative to the issues that matter to us most. The economy is one of those issues. This "two countries to the left" mistake of a war is another issue. In both cases, McShame's plan represents zero improvement/change on Bush's failed policies. Sorry, I can't live with casting a vote to a guy that's not going to right the ship.

There are other conservatives that feel this way. It's not just me....

Strangegrey, nice post. But in my neighborhood they look at you funny if you say your're for Obama. My sister is voting, like me, for Obama/Biden, but her husband always votes the Republican party line. But a neighbor mentioned how frightened she and her husband were of Obama. She asked why, thinking they would mention policies or issues they disagreed with him on. The neighbor instead said, he hangs out with terrorists and I'm really afraid of him with a look of fear on her face. And the neighbor's husband is a lawyer. My sister was stunned.

Even my sister's husband, who would never vote Democrat (and actually defends Bush at times) rolled his eyes and couldn't believe intelligent people thought that way. He admires Obama as a person, but doesn't agree with him on the issues. She can't believe all the people who are resorting to such inflammatory statements, such as "Obama" Bin Laden, to try to convince her to change her mind. To equate this fine man running for president with the person who instigated the 9/11 attacks blows our minds. She's now a registered Democrat, like I changed to. But no sign in the yard for her. She's afraid of the reaction.

people i talk to are afraid to show support for mccain in public.

i actually got yelled at by one of my co-workers cuz i went to a mccain rally a few weeks ago. who does that? it is crazy. i don't talk politics irl... too scary. especially since i find myself mostly surrounded by dems/libs. they scare me. }:C| i only ask for them to not believe what they read... do your own research. if i hear them saying something that is just so out there i might speak up. it's usually during lunch. sometimes it turns into "the view"... i try hard to change the subject when people talk politics. doesn't matter what... just change the topic of conversation quickly!! }:C))

i really don't have a prob with obama... it's more the media. i have big issues with dem/lib media & the people that just believe whatever they are told.

i had this conversation with this lady i work with. she was saying some crazy stuff. came to find out she got this bit of news from access hollywood. wtf? what she was watching was one of the tiny fey snl skits but she thought she was watching the real sarah palin. i tried talking some sense into her but it didn't work. just the other day this other co-worker & i were discussing prop 2. she buts in & starts saying "don't believe what you read"... that was too funny cuz that is my motto & one i am always telling her! LOL!!

Around my parts it seems to be a crime to be a McCain supporter as well. 90% of the people in my general age bracket are blinded by Obamamania, and when confronted with questions on their stances, they either cannot explain or answer.... OR say something like "I'm a Democrat" and leave it at that.

I wonder how many of these kids actually bother to watch/read the news, do any research, form their own opinions.... or if they just believe the hype that's spreading among the young voters and don't even think to do any research on McCain, Nader, Barr, etc..

It shocked my friends when I began to throw McCain stuff up on my van, my yard, my MySpace, so on. Some were angry, others are very surprised. Many of my friends (most of whom are very liberal and thought I was too) have been BADGERING me over my McCain support since I "came out" a week ago.

And yet none of them can say why they support Obama other than "He'll end the war!" or "He's not Republican!"

I'm a registered Democrat, man, and voted for Obama in the primaries... is it such a damn crime not to stick to the party line 24/7, and to actually formulate an opinion on my own, and vote for what I think is best for the country?

It's a wonder I try to NEVER engage in political discussions, people usually know way too much or way too little.... and all of them are right. :roll:

Fred, with all due respect, that's total garbage. He was not badgered and, if you were honest, you know that TNC consistently attacks and defames without any badgering at all.
