Georgia congressman warns of Obama dictatorship

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation's foreign service.

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

The Obama transition team declined to comment on Broun's remarks. But spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama was referring in the speech to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure — an idea endorsed by the Bush administration.

Broun said he believes Obama would move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national security force.

Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road."

What does "civilian" in this context mean. Especially if they'll be "just as strong and just as well funded".

What's your point?
The Democrats in power are no more shining examples of the left than the majority of Republicans are of Conservatism.
Like the bailout, real liberals and conservatives found common cause opposing the wiretapping (i.e. Feingold, Kucinich, Ron Paul)

The CCCorps, was one of the best things that happened to this country. I spend time in the park they helped built 4 times a year ,and it thrives on it own.Check out Skyline Drive in Va.and see what the CCC did no one would have the balls or smarts do do anything like that now

Bush recalls moments he regrets


US President George W Bush has said he regrets some of the blunter statements he made over the last eight years.

As his presidency draws to an end, he told CNN that some remarks on Osama Bin Laden and the Iraqi insurgency would have been better left unsaid.

Mr Bush also said he regretted speaking in front of a "mission accomplished" banner only a month after troops were deployed in Iraq.

Separately he said President-elect Barack Obama would be good for the US.

Mr Bush said he regretted using phrases like "dead or alive" or "bring 'em on".

Shortly after the 11 September attacks in 2001, he said of Osama bin Laden: "I want justice. There's an old poster out West that said: 'Wanted, dead or alive.'"

Mr Bush was criticised in 2003 for comments he made about the insurgency in Iraq.

"There are some who feel like the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring 'em on," he said.

The US president also referred to an interview in 2003 aboard the USS Intrepid in New York.

"They had a sign that said 'Mission Accomplished'," he said.

"It was a sign aimed at the sailors on the ship, but it conveyed a broader knowledge. To some it said, well, Bush thinks the war in Iraq is over, when I didn't think that. But nonetheless, it conveyed the wrong message."

Mr Bush went on to talk about his meeting with Mr Obama and described it as relaxed and said he thought he would "bring a sense of family to the White House".

He said that Barack Obama's victory was "good for our country" but expressed disappointment that Republican nominee John McCain did not win the election.

Mr Bush talked about his future plans and said he was heading home to Texas after he leaves office and might write a book.

I've never heard of Kathleen or even know what state you're from. I don't believe that Obama will be selecting any state's governor as Secretary Of State. That's usually a position that calls for more foreign policy experience, which governors don't typically have. I honestly can't stand Hillary, but believe she would be a VERY good choice for Secretary of State.
