My thoughts exactly. His last show was Friday night and than he must have flown all night (4-5 hour flight+3 hour time change. I'm sure he was tired, but you should be prepared for national TV especially something like the superbowl. I've seen him a lot live and he can do so much better. :? :?

IF that is the case , that he was too tired from traveling, couldnt be bothered to come a few days early to practice, be ready to do his job with Journey in front of a national televison audience and do it 100%, then thats just not right. And I would assume that if the rest of the band saw that level of dedictaion, there would be some whispering behind his back. The rest of the band seemed ready.

The law of diminishing returns...

Postby finalfight » Mon Feb 02, 2009 8:22 am

Here's a thought -

As Arnel used to copy the original recordings practically note for note do you think his performance has suffered now that he is on original recordings and takes his inspiration from those instead?

And he looked very uncomfortable. Emotionally he was flat, which is the opposite of the Perry version of the song. It seemed like it was too staged or something.

I think we pretty much treat AP like a kid anymore. Everyone is so afraid of being called a racist, it's mostly PG humor we use regarding him, even though we tend to go full speed on the other members. I didn't have any problem with Rip defending him. Rokken was the one that started the thread on AP's own site about his past demons. My problem is with the people that get offended if you joke even a little about Arnel. He's just another famous person and gets treated like the rest of the celebrities around here. The thread title was fucked up but it is fixed so no big deal to me. I'm just here having fun, I really don't judge anyone I meet on the net as we know so many people act differently when the don't have the cloak of cyberspace anonymity to hide behind. Myself, pretty much what you read is what you get. I am what I am. I don't go to other forums and use a different User ID or any of that other pussified shit, because of what I say here. I is who I is.

Contrary to what you said, I think Arnel has been treated the worst among the Journey band members. Like the other band members, Arnel's physical attributes, talent, and personal life have been discussed and laughed at. What is unique to Arnel though is that in the not so distant past, some people made scathing remarks about his accent, ethnicity, culture, and even the country where he came from. Personally, I don't mind if members of this board attack Arnel; IMO, he is fair game as he is a public personality and is at least getting paid and living a life that most of us just fantasize about. What irked me though were instances when people posed annoying comments about our culture, our country, and how we do things back home. It's probably because I don't post anything that I know nothing about or don't understand so I tend to expect the same thing from other people.

As for Arnel's fans getting offended, I don't see where the fuss is as we regularly tear down people to pieces here and it's not the first time a person is offended by somebody on this board. We decided to participate on this board so we are fair game too.

I don't have the slightest idea how you even remotely get that opinion out of the performance. :?
Just an opinion in the first few lines of the song he looked a little out of it to me but like I said, its just an opinion

Fair enough. I just don't know how that meant he wanted to go home.
Well to me he looked tired and his vocals sounded strained. But then what do I know im definetly not a singer so Ill shut up now.

Personally I think he hasn't been speaking much English lately and has lost some of his diction improvements that he displayed on tour. When he sang, his accent was really obvious.

Also, I think the rest of the band needs less practice since they've been playing most of these songs for at least 25 years.

he sounded very strained... I heard gravel in his voice throughout the song, not that clear tenor tone he should have... look at him singing the held notes... you can see his facial and neck muscles... he's straining to get the notes... which he didn't appear to do while on tour.

All is a clear sign of either bad technique OR a strained voice. Methinks he's forgetting his technique.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I don't think so. Certain people call Friga gay around here, and no one says that about Arnel. I think that Arnel would have caught some flack no matter what because he is Journey's third Steve Perry replacement. When you step into Steve friggin Perry's shoes, you'd better have some serious pipes - and some thick skin too, because you are comparing yourself to The Voice. People are automatically going to scrutinize whoever takes on that role. Steve Augeri caught his share of rejection. He caught a lot of hate from hardcore Perry fans.

I've said that about his diction recently in the phils doing shows, that I noticed it and felt it was from being back in the Phils and regressed a bit. But I"m telling you, I absolutely heard no accent at all. Am I the only one?

I think the accent people are referring to is when he says "Detroit-a", etc. Not a big deal to me but whatever.

Thought the same thing. My wife also said the same. While his voice is way above average. I failed to hear that "legacy" sound. Was not impressed with the vocals. The band sounds great but not sold on the vocals .

I think he started out a little harsh, but I think he is trying to sing the words a little differently than Perry......and I like that. He knows he's not Perry, so I like that he changes it up a little and puts his own spin on it.....one of the reasons I liked JSS fronting Journey. Arnel looked nervous as hell for the first part. Oh and Deen's spiky 'do kicks ass!! As much as I would rather a Perry or JSS fronted Journey, I think it is cool as hell to see Journey playing the SuperBowl all these years later. :)
