Going to Vegas, any suggestions where to stay?

Postby cheekymonkey » Thu Feb 19, 2009 12:26 pm

I am going to Vegas in May for a wedding and that part of the trip is paid for and the party is staying at the Luxor. I am going 4 days early, and I want to stay somewhere else. Anyone have suggestions, good or bad? Same with shows, I open to what people have to say. Everyone's opinion is welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I can tell you where NOT to stay....the Imperial Palace. That place used to be a great deal. Located right in the center of the strip. But I've noticed over the past 2 years or so, it's become a dump. I stayed there last month and the room was awful.

So are you planning do some serious gambling, sightseeing or a little of both? If I'm going just to gamble, I like to stay at the Gold Nugget downtown and I don't even bother going to the Strip. If you're planning to do both I still like Caesars Palace on the Strip. It's centrally located and is a great hotel & casino.

That's where we stayed last March, and I guess it depends on what room you get, because ours was not bad at all. The place overall is old and getting run down, but it was cheap. It's a long walk from there to the Luxor though.

I've stayed at the IP the last 4 or 5 times I've been to Vegas. And it's steadily gotten worse each time. We got stuck in the building behind the main building. First and last time I'll ever do that.

I just got home from Vegas Monday. Still one of the better deals down near the Luxor is Excalibur. Only downfall if your a woman is no tubs just showers. But still clean and a tram to Luxor and Mandalay so when you change hotels you are close. Stay away from the Tropicana, it is on the verge on going under and is a dump from what everyone says. As far as that end of town it will be your best deal I bet.

If you go the other way there are cheaper, but they are cheaper and older. The stratosphere is on a bad end and neighborhood.

Go see Donny and Marie or Cher. Elton has been there we went to tournament of kings and almost made the Fab Four. kATY Perry was at Hard Rock we just missed seeing her by a couple hours. SHIT! She even played there that night. SHIT!

I've stayed on the strip before, but I was thinking about the old part and the Nugget is one of my top choices. Thanks.

I was there last May and we stayed at The Orleans. It's off the strip, but they have shuttles back and forth to the strip all day. Some friends stayed at The Harrah, which was nice also, but on the strip. The Orleans had great rates and atmosphere and very clean. Has 3 pools (jucuzzi, kiddy, big fun pool) and a waterfall where live bands play some nights. It's huge and fully self contained, the lights inside and out were fabulous, all decorated like Mardi Gras. The price was right (probably half of what you would pay on the strip) and I would definitely stay there again. LOL, some pics......

I agree. IMO you can never go wrong with any Cirque show. Everything they do is amazing.

I lived in Vegas for a year, but that was back in 1988-89. So much has changed now. My best friend lives there still. Be careful, there is so much crime now. :D

That was the only one I've ever seen, and loved the water aspect of it. Would love to see another cirque show.

I don't know if she will be there in May, but if she is I would recommend going to see Bette Midler. Not only can she sing her ass off... she puts on a fabulous show.

We get over there alot. If you like the strip, Paris REALLY treats you well. They double booked our room once and gave us a HUGE suite and a credit on our bill to make up for it. Have a lunch or dinner on the patio at Mon Ami Gambi (sp?) and you can watch the fountains at the Bellagio across the street. But anything in that block, Bally's, Planet Hollywood, MGM, and on the other side of the street New York-New York, or we really like the Monte Carlo (coldest beer in town). We'll be staying there for a week next month. That part of the strip is centrally located. And there are UNBELIEVABLE deals right now.
The Golden Nugget is nice downtown, but IMO the best-kept secret down there is Main Street Station. REALLY nice and clean.
As for shows, LOVE, the cirque du soleil show at the Mirage, is the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen! I've seen it twice, and I'm sure I'll be back again. Fantastic!
Have fun! (Which is damned near automatic in Vegas!)

Last time I went I stayed at the MGM Grand and everything was fine there. Must see shows are Cirque and the Blue Man Group...when I was there the show was hilariously funny. If you're a thrill seeker then do the rides on top of Stratosphere. Go to Fremont Street for the light show and to get around rent a limo..it's less expensive then taking a cab any distance and more fun. I rented one to take us out to Hoover Dam one morning and had mimosas on the way. If you want something to do that's more relaxed and to get away from the hustle and bustle for a little while then there is horse back riding out in the desert. I went and we road till after sunset and had a great time. There are also helicopter rides at night over the town or longer trips flying over the Grand Canyon. Tons of things to do besides gambling. Have fun on your trip. :)
Oh..and best wishes to the bride and groom. Will Elvis be performing the wedding?
