I'm a Journey fan, and a fan of Steve Perry with Journey - period. I can tolerate Perry-impersonators only because Perry is missing in action, and a Journey with a Perry-emulator is better than no Journey at all in my book. The hits that Journey made with Perry will never be replicated with another singer on a new album.

A Perry impersonator is akin to having sex with a dildo.

Wow. Classy.

I thought it was funny. Why is everyone such a tight ass on here lately?

And yet classy.

And holier than thou.

You've seen his avatar, right?

Hey, I think Perry's God. I think his voice was amazing. I just don't see the animosity towards Arnel (see my post above).
And as for "Holier than Thou", well, kind of calling the kettle black there...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

You know I'm in the same boat as you. People have been fellating Perry here for years and on a level that Arnel's fans cannot match. The bottom line is that even if you're not a fan of his voice, he has been a good man to his fans and his bandmates, gracious, respectful, and happy. Perry... not so much. So if the Loons are allowed to run rampant around here, the so-called Plokkers and other Arnel fans have even more entitlement to be exuberant.

People who don't like it can kiss Saint John's ass.

Please notice, I've NEVER used the word "Loons" I don't think in any post. I get the Perry worship. I really do (as you said, look at my av). I DON'T get the Arnel hatred at all and I think it's lame of "Fans" of the band to do that because he's done more for Journey than Perry has in the last 13 years. He's also making Perry money by generating Journey interest. and selling Journey/Perry music. He's HELPING the guy (who hasn't got off his ass in years) in a way, and some fans are super crappy to him.

I love Perry, but I'm pretty pissed at how he ditched the band and the fans and kind of hid behind this "Sensitive, hurt-guy" persona. He knows EXACTLY what he did to the band. Granted, he's taken the high road in interviews, which is very cool, but the fact is, the guy really did a number on Journey.

Also, while I never thought JSS was a good fit for the band. I never came out and dumped on him like the anti-Arnelians. I pointed out when I thought he didn't do great, but I never played into all the Caveman stuff, and said he was sh*t, etc. The fact is, those guys DO come in here. You know they do. I just don't think that we should be ragging on them UNLESS THEY'RE REALLY DESERVING of it. The whole Augeri-tapegate thing- the vitriol of the fans was TOTALLY warranted during that. But dumping on Arnel seems really classless to me (sorry Nig!) because so much of it has nothing to do with what he's bringing to the party.

I'm going to go have a good cry now...

I'm not condemning Perry worship. The man is a vocal juggernaut and a defining voice of our era. But, as we've proven, he's made as many critical (if not more) mistakes than the vile Neal Schon and wretched Jonathan Cain. It's high time people stop worshipping the man but the voice. Which is what I do. Meanwhile, until he proves otherwise, Arnel wins the personality contest by miles and miles and miles and miles and miles. People are free to loathe his voice. Just don't go the extra Liam-mile and attack the person.

But not everyone does that, so I'm good.

Wait, the Historian? I read a book by that name. It was huge and about Dracula. Same one?

Having been away from this place for 10 days does a boy good, but reading some of the pure unadulterated bullshit you spew is laughable and someone needs to come here and call you out on it, so it might as well be me. Perry deserves to be fella ted in music terms. He has earned every online blowjob he gets and has coming. Look at his record. Look at what he has accomplished. Arnel's fans have to be fucking delusional and myopic.... to even compare their god to Mr. Perry is first and foremost wrong on any and every level, but they don't stop there. Arnelians said fuck perry, our guy is not only better than him, but the best ever. Pineda fans are simply put, annoying. Yeah, the Loons can get wet at the sight of a new Perry picture or walk down the street story, but like I said, the man is a proven icon, and he at least should definitely be in the rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Perhaps the Pineda fans should wait til their boy writes a top 40 song, or 20, like Perry did, before anointing him King.

First off, Pineda's voice is astounding. I am not only going to piss you off and all the Pineda fans, but the naysayers of Pineda are even worse. There is no way a detractor can say his voice isn't good. It's a superb voice and what's scary is, he is getting better. The naysayers are a bunch of wads in the Mid Atlantic who are still crying because their guy didn't get the gig. Boo fuckin hoo. That's the stupidest fucking argument I have heard from people who "don't like him."

Now as far as Pineda being gracious, respectful and happy, well, what do you expect? Aside of Pineda's fumbling of the Super Bowl show, where he didn't take it seriously, and just showed up and said "I'm here" and went out and bombed, he has been pretty damned good and deserves all the jack and a helluva lot more than he his making to be honest with you. I can tell you they are not paying him nearly enough. I have NO problem with Pineda at all. His fans though, especially the overzealous ones are quite annoying.

As to you saying Perry was not a "good man" to his fans and bandmates, just proves how sadly misinformed you really are. Steve Perry was and still is, the consummate professional, and had/has great respect amongst his peers. You can't say the same regarding Schon and Cain. Perry has class, something Schon and Cain couldn't find if it were inside their pockets. Perry respects the music(no re records), and also his fans, and I can personally attest to this. You have no idea what you speak of. You have no idea why Perry left when he did. You have no idea what was in his head at the time. You would be better off reading Monker, Jrnyman28, TNC's or even my posts here, and try learning something about the history of this band, before you spout off about being the know all of Journey.. The real bottom line is you speak matter of factly, and the only fact you get right is that you're almost always wrong.

People who don't like it can kiss Saint John's ass.

Dan and I are friends, but he is wrong on almost all his Journey takes as well. I can refute him all night long, and at the end of the night, still laugh at him or with him. I can't say the same thing about you.

No one denied that both sides lack the capacity to be annoying. But the fact of the matter is that the "Loons" have been operating this way for years; this bullshit is tolerated from them, why not from those who support Arnel Pineda? Because he's not Steve Perry and therefore doesn't deserve the unwavering loyalty of a certain percentage of the fans? Please.

First, what exactly did Steve Perry do to deserve the "online blowjobs"? You mention his record and accomplishments. Substantiate that. Sales? Please, there are many singers who have generated far more success than the great Steve Perry. If we use your patented argument, they're automatically more talented than he is. This obviously isn't the case, but you've yet to learn that success does not necessarily translate to acquired skill.

Second, how is comparing Arnel to Perry "wrong"? Perry, in his prime, was undoubtably the superior singer. But during the later stage of his career, Arnel demonstrates technical skills that are on par with Perry's own. The fact that he is Steve Perry does not warrant him the title of "peerless" for the entirety of his life.

Third, since when is writing a successful song a qualification of a fantastic vocalist?

Again, no one disputes that his fans can't reach obnoxious levels. You're the one who is excusing the actions of certain fans entirely. Perry fans. Go figure?

Yes, because you're such an objective source when it comes to Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain. Please. Even if I were to acknowledge your expertise in this area, Deano, you are wont to engage in hateful rants about how they are all less than human. You admittedly loathe them. Hate them. Where the hell is your objectivity? Why are we supposed to believe you when you make no effort to hide the fact that you can't stand these people? It doesn't take an expert in psychiatry to point out that we tend to villify those we do not like. The bottom line is that Steve Perry cracked the stone first and has demonstrated complete egomania during his tenure.

Dan and I are friends, but he is wrong on almost all his Journey takes as well. I can refute him all night long, and at the end of the night, still laugh at him or with him. I can't say the same thing about you.

That's a shame. Because I have nothing but utter respect and admiration for you.

Your opinion has been duly noted.

Take it up with the fact that Perry shitcanned two extremely talented musicians and replaced one with Randy Jackson and the other with a series of failed studio musicians and a drum machine, the fact that he shitcanned the tireless and thankless manager who handed him his career, and the fact that he cost Journey roughly a decade, despite "being dry," "burned out", "and empty" (yet he had time to record two solo albums). All of this before the TBF fiasco for which he remains accountable.

Edit: Just ended a sentence with a preposition. I can feel my English teacher's disapproval even from home.

Welcome back.

Deano wrote:Having been away from this place for 10 days does a boy good, but reading some of the pure unadulterated bullshit you spew is laughable and someone needs to come here and call you out on it, so it might as well be me.

Please.

Its because the adoration has become overkill. As I read it, that was Dean's basic point. Was there not a thread not long ago talking about a STATUE of Arnel being commissioned? A bit much for a guy who's done nothing of note besides sing on one gold record, no? He got into that band by having his video on youtube for the right person to grab and post a link to so Neal could find it. He's riding on luck at the moment. Now that he's hit the jackpot, let's see what he does with it.

As Dean said, let him become the golden boy as far as Journey goes by working for it, not by default. Ok, he can sing... we know that. Where are the top 40 hits? Where is the multi-platinum status? These things may or may not happen, but they take time. No one thought Perry was god the day he showed up and it took 2 albums to get a hit and 4 albums to really make it (by which I'm referring to achieving a #1 album).

This is the problem. You're looking at it from one angle and one angle alone. I wasn't privy to the reason why Arnel was given a statue in his honor. Was it because of his work with Journey or because of his work with charity? I don't deny that his accomplishments, musically, are relatively trivial. But he wasn't given a statue because "lulz omg he's bettar dan STEVE PERY!!1!"

He got into that band by having his video on youtube for the right person to grab and post a link to so Neal could find it. He's riding on luck at the moment. Now that he's hit the jackpot, let's see what he does with it.

You surprise me. You do realize that one could argue the case for Steve Perry? That without the approval of Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, and Herbie Herbert, the Voice wouldn't have a career at all? That his ass still might be in construction? Or that someone could make the same case for Steve Augeri, working at the Gap?

It's a thin argument and can be so easily turned against you.

As Dean said, let him become the golden boy as far as Journey goes by working for it, not by default. Ok, he can sing... we know that. Where are the top 40 hits? Where is the multi-platinum status? You're comparing them to two sets of standards. The musical climate has changed and, as I said, success is not an indicator of talent. No one sane disputes the fact that Steve Perry was more successful than Arnel Pineda, by far.

Perry's fans, the Loons anyway, are all hysterical housewives, hotel maids, nurses, food tasters, or whatever the fuck they call themselves. They are all women, and if you can't see by now, how women choose their singers, especially here at MR, well..

Perry did something. He wrote top ten songs, had a stage presence, had that fucking voice, that since day one the two dolts in this band have searched the world over for, and still haven't quite found it. Perry was a pioneer. There really wasn't that pure, polished, high tenor voice that sang the love song or the moderate tempo song until SP came on the scene.

Comparing Pineda to Perry is not only ridiculous, but simply retarded. It's like comparing or trying to anyway, Sidney Crosby to Gretzky, or King James to Michael. It's stupid to even try. It just seems to me the Pineda fans aren't happy with having their guy in a decent money making band. And yes, like i said, Perry did write those hit songs, and in fact, not only wrote them, but laid the groundwork for other singers to sing his catalog, and enable them to make money doing it. When Pineda writes a song, any song, then we can agree that he has started on his way, but so far he hasn't done anything but sing others songs. How the Hell can his fans want him anointed the best singer/entertainer in music today? Don't believe me? Look at Youtube Super Bowl clip comments. Not only did Arnel get Journey to the Super Bowl, something Perry never managed, but he should have been the Halftime performer. What? That was an eye opening to be sure.

Again, no one disputes that his fans can't reach obnoxious levels. You're the one who is excusing the actions of certain fans entirely. Perry fans. Go figure?

Well, if people want to come on here and flat out say Perry was the King, Perry was the best, etc, I have a hard time disagreeing. Look what he has done? Have you ever seen him live? Look, I love the guy, and IMO, he isn't the best ever showman/front man. I will take Elvis and Bruce over Perry every time, but Perry belongs in the conversation to be sure. Are you prepared to go to a bar and sit down, drink beer and throw Pineda in there with Elvis, Bono, Freddie and Bruce? if so, you are either stupid or drunk. I remember Augeri fans(who were the absolute worst by the way), going to all these sites and saying SA was one of the best singers in music and he could blow Steve Perry away, etc etc. It's as if they are overexpanding their enthusiasm, overspeaking their fandom of AP, in order to get him some run...He needs to pay his dues. He is that good to be sure, but it takes time.

I know these fuckers. I don't need to be objective. Go back and research this place, and see where I stood about 3 years ago. I went to bat for Journey every day, and while I can't tell the stories I want to tell, I wouldn't call any of the four guys in Journey a friend nor would I want to, and this has nothing to do with Soto either. When people here say, "they made a business decision and there was nothing wrong with that," they are misinformed as well, as Journey simply wasn't able to just fire those singers. Now, unlike that asshole, racist, uneducated, unemployed shit stirring douche Liam, I have chosen not to participate on a board where the band makes my skin crawl. I don't think the folks here who do like Journey need to be inundated with hate and negative posts, yet, when something needs to be checked, or called out, I can't sit back and let that shit happen, especially when I know better.

Yes. You miss my point. Steve recieved a hell of a break, same as Arnel. I realize this.

However, we know what Steve did once given that break. What has Arnel done besides sing all the hits that Steve wrote and made famous? Steve was given the same break, and turned it into an EPIC success, including writing and performing arguably the most popular and well known song in the world.

Arnel has yet to even come close to the same level of success. I wish him success and good fortune, by all means... but he hasn't earned the same musical fellation that Perry gets from fans and the industry for the work he did, regardless of how he parted with the band or what he's doing or not doing now.

The figures and chart numbers are there to back it up.
