I hate screamers. Don't like Planty when he does it either.
I like to hear beauty, soul, a bit of skillful vibrato and control and all I hear from old Janis is a bloody horrible noise

Sorry Janis fans.
I know others will think the song on this link is soulful etc but to me it's just someone screaming. And to my ears it's very unpleasant.
I can't explain - see, Rod Stewart has a raucous voice like Janis, but I think he can sing. When he was in the Faces I thought his gravelly sound was fab.
She just makes my ears cringe.

And Alison on Idol to me is very Joplinesque but I think she sings rather than shrieks.................if that makes sense.

Thanks Susie. I like some of Janis' songs but definitely not that clip.

I wonder if this is the week we will finally hear some Queen from Adam (it's 2 songs - judges' pick and contestants pick). Adam has listed Freddie as one of his influences, and the judges are always saying how he fits the glam-rock mold so well. Should be interesting to see what they pick.

"We Are The Champions" would be a great choice for him.

Alison will do fine out of this, and as has been said she may get a better deal than what American Idol would offer the winner.

Really? (about Janis, I mean). I'd be interested to know why you think that (I think you're a fine singer and respect your insight).

As for Allison, I think she has a future (but she needs to learn how to not put a 'H' in front of her words - like in this - the word is 'NO', not 'HO' )

Perfect sense to me. I fully agree with your post. I, too, never got the big deal over Joplin's voice. I love a good rock scream in a song, but it seems most of her vocals were that and whole songs of it is too much. I really like Alison's voice, it's got a smokey edge to it, and sounds alot more soulful than screechy.

Yeh, Alison sings with a hint of a screech.
Janis just screeched. And I don't hear any soul in her voice.
I didn't care for Billy Holliday's voice very much but I get that you can hear her pain in the voice.
Janis never did anything for me.

I prefer a SINGER to a screamer.

I worked with Bryan on my first solo album. He did a great vocal duet with Kimmo Blom of Urban Tale.

Very good singer and a great guy.

Sorry. That song is one of my favorite songs ever and U2 is my favorite band of all time. I don't think Adam did it justice at all and to me was a weak performance.

I thought it was brilliant!

His own take on the song...I trust Randy Jackson, and Simon's take on this.

I understand someone changing up a favorite song of yours could annoy you...but I think you are wrong here.

Adam is one amazing performer.

I can only imagine what he could do with a Journey tune ala Departure-Frontiers era...

I think that is the key point. A lot of people can pull off a great karaoke performance once in awhile but changing the tune up is where a person can really show off their own special ability.

It wasn't the changing it up that bothered me. His voice grated on me through most of the performance or was uninspring in places. I'm a huge fan of Adam's and want him to win, but his voice did absolutely nothing for me on this song.

I'd like to see him do Standing On The Corner of the Third World - Tears for Fears
or
Lemon U2

Well, maybe SOTCOTTW would be too slow and long for the show, so instead Famous Last Words by Tears for Fears.

Adam=Brilliant (although I wasn't crazy about the U2 song, probably because I'm not a U2 fan). I think the other finalist will be Kris.

I think Adam is a very charismatic performer, but it seems that his voice especially in his rock performances is rather shrill. I'm actually finding myself getting tired of him a little. :( I do think Danny has an excellent voice and I also like Kris. What he's lacking in vocal range he makes up for in creativity and delivery. I believe they should all have successful careers.

Exactly. I agree. In certain songs his voice sounds shrill and thinner without great tone. I hate saying that b/c certain of his performances I've watched over and over. He has undeniable star quality for sure, way above the other guys. Ring of Fire and Mad World - brilliant, mesmerizing.

Adam is repetitive in how he sings....he shrills over and over and it's getting a bit tiresome. I think tonight belonged to Danny. His performance of "You Are So Beautiful" was AWESOME!!! I think Kris will go home and it will be down to Danny and Adam.....but then again we could have the shock factor and Adam leaves tomorrow night but I still think it will be Kris going.

I agree he does sound like he is screaming at time and the higher he sings the farther his tongue hangs out of his mouth. My daughter thinks he looks like a creeper.

Adam's still the best singer, by FAR. Love him or hate him, Simon is right 98% of the time.

I agree with all of you about the "Shrill" factor. I'm now to a point that I can't STAND to hear a word that comes out of that mouth. To be honest...I don't think it's all his fault. I'm agravated also because everyone (American Idol, People magazine, etc...) say he's the best thing ever to hit American Idol. That is the biggest line of bullshit ever! There have been a dozen other singers who sing him under the table. It's almost as though they're judging talen STRICTLY off of how high of a note you can hit. To me, Danny is by far the best they've had this year. He deserves to win in my book. I even think Chris (or is it Kris?) deserves the number 2 spot. Oh well...what do I know?

Oh yeah...and Kara needs to pack her crap and head to the house too! I thought she was great when the show first started, but 4 is definitely a crowd. I think I dislike her voice even more than Adams!

I agree, Kara needs to go. It dillutes the impact of what the judges say when you hear four. Too many.
Re Danny, even though I've said at times his voice is shrill and thin, he is a star and many songs he is amazing on. His Mad World performance and Ring of Fire performance were unbelievable. He held your attention the whole time in that one spot. I never tire of watching those two performance. The other singers are just not charismatic enough and will not sell enough records. The star quality isn't there, which is very important. There's a lot of people with great voices. You need that ingredient that sets you apart form the pack, and Adam has it in spades.

Hey Jana, I think you accidently called adam Danny. Danny doesn't have a shrill voice at all. His is very soulfull and raspy. He doesn't have as much stage presence as Adam, but is a HELL of a lot better singer. I personally buy albums based on vocals and arangements. I could care less about the stage presence. Have you seen the new live Winger dvd? That's the expression of Kip throughout most of the performance. He (and his band) are AWESOME musicians though, and I buy anything he puts out.

Oops.  Adam. My point though is that Adam is a great singer but he is a star also. But he needs to stay away from certain songs, and I think heavier rock songs are one of them. As far as stage presence I'm speaking in terms of American Idol. It's hard from this show to keep the momentum going and interest of the fans of the show.

I noticed a shrill a couple times on tonight's show too. But I still think he is by far the best "American Idol". He's got the charisma, the range, the pipes..........and a few hours with a good vocal coach to learn how to maximize what he's got, he could be killer! I think he went a little overboard in spots on Cryin', too much high range acrobatics.......cuz I really liked his Whole Lotta Love he did last.

I personally don't think Adam is the best singer ever on Idol - and neither do I think that any of the past winners have been the best singers. But he is a star, knows how to sell a song, and is completely different from the usual cookie-cutter pop Idol contestant/winner. That's why he's my (2nd) favorite contestant ever  .

Adam is the rocker of the group, and since I am a rocker he is my favorite. However, Kris did really good tonight. It could go either way. I'm guessing based on the performances that Danny will be voted off tomorrow, but you never know.

I gotta tell ya....I think Kris is adorable. I also think his Kanye West song was the best of the night. I love Adam, and he is usually my favorite, but for some reason tonight, he came off as really "shrieky" to me. I hope it's Adam/Kris in the final two. Danny Gokey's arrogant pick of "Dream On" last week turned me off to him forever.
