big blow for denver.....

elvis dumervil, the Broncos' top pass rusher, suffered a torn pectoral muscle during Wednesday's practice.

A torn pectoral muscle is usually a season-ending injury. Schefter reports that Dumervil is expected to miss about four months, which means he might be able to return for the final few weeks of the regular season.

coming off a 17-sack season in 2009, is a huge blow to the Broncos. The injury comes just two weeks after Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract that guarantees him $43 million.

For some reason, I've always liked Campbell and thought he showed great upside in Washington and on a bad football team as it was. He was never handled fairly but always showed he was an upright pro and always performed well under the circumstance. I think with his style that Oakland can win a couple more games with Campbell under center since he gives them a bigger and accurate arm to threaten downfield. I'm bumping up Oakland's 6-10 to 8-8.

i think they'll definitely be better with campbell and the defense looks pretty good too.i see the chargers and raiders as top two teams in the AFC west.

Roethlisberger 4 games MINIMUM? I'm telling you, I go to Latrobe Training Camp every year, and to see Ben this year and the ways he's acting is like a whole entire different person. He's actually smiling and having a good time with other teammates and with the people around him in general. He's treating the fans like gold, signing his cleats, his jersey and accessories and even staying an hour and a half after practice to pose for pictures and making sure he doesn't leave anyone out. He's been very big in the community and is sponsoring extravaganza's around Pittsburgh. He's really made strides and beams as human being right now.

Goodell talks to quarterback, reporters

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, right, talks with former coach John Madden, center, and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger Thursday morning at Steelers training camp.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to reporters this morning at Steelers training camp and appeared to leave the door open that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's suspension could be fewer than four games. But a spokesman from the NFL in New York later clarified that the suspension will be four games at minimum.

Roethlisberger was suspended for the first six games of the regular season with the possibility that it could be reduced to four after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year old Georgia woman in March. Roethlisberger was not prosecuted after the district attorney in Milledgeville, Ga. determined that there was not enough evidence to pursue the case.

When asked if there was any chance Roethlisberger's suspension could be reduced to fewer than four games, Goodell responded: "I'll make that decision later this month, but that's the way it was designed. We'll evaluate all of that at the end of the month."

When he was asked to clarify whether the suspension could be fewer than four games, Goodell was vague: "No, we'll make that decision on what the suspension is going to be at the end of the month."

Goodell said Roethlisberger has gone above and beyond what the commissioner asked him to do when he was suspended, but he will not let the Steelers know until later in the preseason if the suspension will be reduced. He said he has been encouraged by what he has seen from Roethlisberger thus far.

"He is doing great," Goodell said. "I had a chance to chat with him briefly and hopefully we'll talk again later today. I've been encouraged by what I have seen. He's understanding the seriousness of the issue. I think that's a very positive development."

Goodell's authority has come into question because of his inconsistencies when doling out suspensions to players. Roethlisberger was not arrested or charged with a crime, but others who have been arrested have not been suspended.

Several high-profile players have escaped punishment in recent months. Cincinnati running back Cedric Benson was not suspended for his role in a Texas bar fight in May. He previously was arrested twice for driving under the influence.

Tennessee quarterback Vince Young also did not receive a suspension after getting into a fight at a Dallas strip club in June. He was given a misdemeanor assault citation.

"The circumstances are a lot different [in those cases]," Goodell said. "You have to look at the facts of each one. You have to look at the facts and make the decision that is in the best interests of the indivdual. It's always a challenge because you're dealing with someone's future. And obviously the team. But you're really looking at the long term. What's going to change the behavior?"
--**Bullshit. Call it like it is, Commish. So it's okay to fight fans at a strip club, be behind the wheel under the influence, and be apart of a shooting outside of a nightclub in Michael Vicks case, yet no punishment? That's fucked up**

Reserve quarterback Charlie Batch, who is an executive member of the player's association and the Steelers union representative, was asked whether the players want more clarity concerning Goodell's rules for suspension.

"No. 1, don't do anything that will make you see the commissioner," Batch said. "So then you don't have to deal with that. If you do, what is that process? We don't know. I can't speak from experience. Is there a lot of gray area in his personal conduct policy? Absolutely there is. If you need to appeal your suspension you have to see the same person who gave you the suspension. Is that right? No. But the bottom line is don't do anything so you don't have to deal with the consequences."

But Batch said Goodell's handling of suspensions is only a minor issue in the union's negotiations with the owners for a new collective bargaining agreement. This is the final year of a deal between the owners and players, and the owners have threatened to lock out the players next year if a new agreement is not reached.

"I'm sure that will be talked about [in negotiations], but I think that's farther down the line," Batch said. "I think everyone wants to see a deal get done and then iron out the wrinkles at the end because there are other major issues besides the personal conduct policy."

Goodell said his personal conduct policy "is always a discussion point" with the player's union.

Roethlisberger has been allowed to take part in training camp with teammates, but when the regular season begins he will not be allowed to be around the team. Goodell said he hopes Roethlisberger continues on a good path during his exile from the team.

"I hope he'll continue to focus on himself, continue to work on what his advisors are suggesting he needs to focus on and use it as a productive period for him."

NAPA, Calif. -- In the early stages of a physical Oakland Raiders training camp practice Thursday, there were stark differences from a year ago.

Jason Campbell broke the huddle with the Raiders' offense, moved a receiver over another yard and barked his quarterback cadence to initiate a play.

"Yeah, I know the difference because I've been around him awhile," said former Redskins teammate Rock Cartwright, now a Raiders running back. "He's more vocal … it's a fresh start. It was tough for him in Washington, especially the past year or two because there were always rumors about them bringing in someone else."

The Redskins did bring in someone else -- Donovan McNabb from the Eagles, which set up a draft-day trade in which the Raiders acquired Campbell for a fourth-round choice in 2012.

There also is a huge contrast for the Raiders, who released disappointing quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a former No. 1 overall pick, in May.

"I would say Jason Campbell, from a player standpoint, is probably the biggest difference on our team," All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said. "He's just an automatic leader. He didn't have to get pushed into that role. Once he was in the huddle, you could see guys standing at attention. He's quick to put the guys in their right place, offense or defense, and that's something we really needed from that position."

Campbell admitted to feeling rejuvenated.........

The Broncos have endured the worst luck thus far in training camp.

Just minutes after we made a post chronicling their troubles, the Denver Post reports that linebacker Jarvis Moss broke his hand. Right guard Chris Kuper and running back LenDale White also left practice with injuries on Friday.

Kuper will miss "some practice time" while Moss should be out at least two weeks following surgery. With Elvis Dumervil gone for 4-6 months, the Broncos need Moss and last year's first-round pick Robert Ayers to step up their pass rushing production.

just happy to have the NFL back next week... YEAH... it will be interesting as the year goes on about the talk of the lock out that owners are thinking about after the Super Bowl... It seems like that is the reason in the contracts this year, why all the guaranted money for the players right away.

What in the HELL is the matter with you, Maui!? The pre-seaon might be overdone and in some ways, a borefest but I love seeing the progress of the young guys out there trying to make a team plus the works of high prolific player who may have been traded in the off-season in other colors. Agreed. On that note, I can't believe the Redskins cut Colt Brennan. Saw him play in a couple of pre-season games last year and thought he looked like the real deal. I'd like to see the Raiders cut Kyle Boler and sign Colt!

NFL ref admits mistakes in Super Bowl

Postby Don » Sat Aug 07, 2010 6:01 pm

Why wait Four years before talking, did his non-disclosure agreement with Vegas finally expire?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5444048

RENTON, Wash. -- NFL referee Bill Leavy acknowledged he made mistakes in the Seattle Seahawks' 2006 Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The veteran official began an annual training-camp rules interpretation session with the Seattle media after practice on Friday by bringing up the subject without being asked.

"It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that," said the veteran of 15 NFL seasons and two Super Bowls.

"It left me with a lot of sleepless nights, and I think about it constantly," Leavy said of the game in February 2006. "I'll go to my grave wishing that I'd been better."

Several calls went against the Seahawks in their 21-10 loss to the Steelers. It was Seattle's only Super Bowl appearance.

This week is the first time since that game Leavy has been in Seattle with the Seahawks. He and a mini-crew arrived Thursday to help with the team's practices and give it a rules presentation.

Leavy didn't specify which plays he "kicked" that day in Detroit.

Early in the fourth quarter, tackle Sean Locklear was called for holding on a pass completion that would have put the Seahawks at the Pittsburgh 1, in position for the go-ahead touchdown. After the penalty, Matt Hasselbeck threw an interception, and then was called for a low block on a play that ended with him tackling Pittsburgh's Ike Taylor on the defensive back's return.

The penalty moved the Steelers from their 29 to the 44. Pittsburgh used its better field position to score the clinching touchdown four plays later.

The next day, then-Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren told fans at a civic gathering at Qwest Field, "I knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts, as well."

Holmgren, now a top executive with the Cleveland Browns, has since said he's gotten over that game.

But Leavy hasn't.

"I know that I did my best at that time, but it wasn't good enough," said the retired police officer and firefighter in San Jose, Calif., who became an NFL referee in 2001. "When we make mistakes, you got to step up and own them. It's something that all officials have to deal with, but unfortunately when you have to deal with it in the Super Bowl it's difficult."

When high-profile referee Ed Hochuli visited the Seahawks' training camp in the months after that Super Bowl, he and his crew took good-natured ribbing from players.

"The Super Bowl was one of those games where it seemed the big calls went against Seattle," Hochuli said in August 2006. "And that was just fortuitous -- bad fortuitous for Seattle.

"The league felt, actually, that the Super Bowl was well officiated. Now, that doesn't mean there were no mistakes. There are always mistakes, but it was a well-officiated game."

Not this shit again. Lets round up the whole entire league of officials and cry, bitch and moan about every "bad call" they think they've cost teams over the years in big games. There wouldn't be a single credible ref out there, so lets stop the bullshit. Officiating and human error is needed in the game and they will continue to be used. Can't change the history book after EVERY blown call known to man.

Early in the fourth quarter, tackle Sean Locklear was called for holding
(It WAS holding for Christ sake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcTm9PPdT3I. THAT-IS-HOLDING.)

After the penalty, Matt Hasselbeck threw an interception, and then was called for a low block on a play that ended with him tackling Pittsburgh's Ike Taylor on the defensive back's return.

(How about lets not throw the interception and not chop block a defender on the pick? So that holding call, which it was, made Hasselback throw a pick the next play? Bullshit.)
The penalty moved the Steelers from their 29 to the 44. Pittsburgh used its better field position to score the clinching touchdown four plays later.

(How about the defense showing up and stopping us. That year, Pittsburgh's defense was the best defending inside the 20 yard line. It could of been done for Seattle to stop the Steelers offensive attack. They couldn't. We still executed our plays, esp the play from Randle EL to Ward. Not our fault OR the refs that Seattle couldn't stop it.)

The next day, then-Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren told fans at a civic gathering at Qwest Field, "I knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts, as well."

"The league felt, actually, that the Super Bowl was well officiated. Now, that doesn't mean there were no mistakes. There are always mistakes, but it was a well-officiated game.

It wasn't the Seahawk fans whining this time. It was a ref who, for whatever reason decided to bring up a dead issue four years after the fact. If he did something that bothered him so badly that he had t odrag it out of the closet on his own half a decade after the game was over, then why shouldn't people question it?

If anything the league should be on this guy asking why he's digging this up again, when everyone has already let it pass.

If anything the league should be on this guy asking why he's digging this up again, when everyone has already let it pass.

The pre-seaon might be overdone and in some ways, a borefest but I love seeing the progress of the young guys out there trying to make a team plus the works of high prolific player who may have been traded in the off-season in other colors. Gymnastics? COME ON MAN!

Agreed. On that note, I can't believe the Redskins cut Colt Brennan. Saw him play in a couple of pre-season games last year and thought he looked like the real deal. I'd like to see the Raiders cut Kyle Boler and sign Colt!

Yes!!!!

NAPA -- The Raiders announced the signing of former University of Hawaii star quarterback Colt Brennan on Saturday afternoon.

Brennan, who was cut earlier this week by the Washington Redskins, was brought after Raiders backup Charlie Frye injured his wrist. Brennan, a sixth-round draft pick by the Redskins in 2008, joins Bruce Gradkowski, Kyle Boller and Frye as backups to Raiders starter Jason Campbell.

You know it and I know it, Seattle deserved to win that game. I always say the scoreboard never lies, but this game it did. The fact referee openly admits he fucked up is telling. Whatever, I don't expect you to be open to argument here, and frankly don't blame you either. You 'won' the game, but also, Seattle was robbed too.

Both teams didn't play well. The Steelers didn't record a first down until the second qrt. The score would of been even more of a blowout if Ben doesn't throw a pick on the 5 yard line. Regardless, I don't want to rehash the Super Bowl that happened 5 years ago. Did you NOT watch Seattle's 2 minute drill before halftime? It was atrocious. My mighty might 10 year old pop warner team could of run a better 2 min drill and their greed cost them to go into the locker room 7-3 (they missed the FG anyhow, but their greed could of took the field position rather than heaving the ball 3 times in the endzone.)

Judging the holding call, the push off, and the td scored by Ben, I just don't see the argument as I saw how the refs saw it.

Seattle had many opportunities to win the game. We just put them away with splash plays that they couldn't stop. Give Seattle the TD on that drive anyway, and Pittsburgh stills wins 14-10.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcTm9PPdT3I- That's holding by the book.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Tlqtif6 ... e=related- That's a pushoff by the book
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N93VaUyt ... e=related- Ball breaks the plain. The initial ruling on the field was a TD. No conclusive evidence to over-turn a T.D that broke the plain. I don't understand the gripe or how Seattle got fucked. Both teams still lined up head to head with each other after all calls were made.. Seattle couldn't stop Pittsburgh when it counted nor could they attack when it counted.

More importantly, did anyone NOT love Emmitt Smith's H.O.F speech last night? How awesome was it when he thanks Moose Johnson for sacrificing himself so he could be standing up on the H.O.F stage? What a class act and an all around humbling statement to make. That's rare for an athelete to do that so it was nice to see the acknowledgment of his teammate that busted his skull play after play. Awesome stuff.

Five months after the Bengals signed free agent wide receiver Antonio Bryant, talk continues that Bryant will never play a down in Cincinnati.

The latest news comes from Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, who reports that the Bengals could reach an injury settlement with Bryant, who practiced on the first day of training camp but has been sidelined since because of his lingering left knee injury.

The Bengals already have paid Bryant $7.85 million in signing, roster, and workout bonuses. It's not clear what the financial terms of the injury settlement would be.

But it is clear that the Bengals are starting to regret signing Bryant to that four-year, $28 million contract. In the months since Bryant signed, Terrell Owens has arrived to play alongside Chad Ochocinco, and rookies Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham looked good in the preseason opener.

There may not be any room for Bryant in Cincinnati.

My Jets' backups looked TERRIBLE a couple nights ago. They think their team is good enough to win the Super Bowl, but it's gonna be a LONG season for them if their starters start going down.

...and how about that Jim Sorgi? Once called the 'Maytag Repair Man of the NFL' for being the backup to Peyton Manning, now he's playing to back up Eli Manning...and dare I say he performed better than Eli on that night?
