Actually it's playoff ball that are usually well matched games and usually come down to the nitty gritty. Why do you think you see teams gearing up to play THEIR way when it comes to January football (grind it out teams like the Steelers, Giants, or Bears are said to be great "January" teams because of the cold and their style in those elements and the ability to win those close, physical games)?
I disagree that the scrappers fall short in the playoffs. Usually, it's the teams in the middle of the season that are annihilating people & then "peak too early" in the season, only to bow out in the playoffs (Chargers & Colts are a perfect example of that.) Also, how many #1 seeds win a Super Bowl? Exactly.
