God forbid we ever stop giving money to those that do refuse to work. And they really need to end these fucking unemployment benefits soon. 99 weeks?!?! That's fucking ridiculous. 6 months is plenty.
I don't know. I have a lot of friends that have been out of work a while. Of course, I also have friends that aren't looking because they get such a long benefit. How do you protect the truly hurting and yet still encourage people to get back to work if they can? I personally have no answer.
It's a double-edged sword for sure, but you're more likely to see people
really hit the pavement and
truly look for (and accept) jobs if they know the benefit is finite. *I* have seen far more abuses than I have people simply unable to find work. Sometimes you just have to accept that your pay is going to be cut as much as in half. I think it would go a long way in teaching people to save for a rainy day. Most people in this country live way beyond their means and then expect unemployment benefits to float them forever. Fuck that. You should be able to survive for at least a year with no pay by the time you're 40. That doesn't seem to be asking too much.
Especially since the first 6 months are "on the house!"
How about an unemployment system that actually works for the people? The problem that I'm seeing now is that it isn't really designed to help those unemployed continue to make ends meet. Sure, every little bit helps, but I wonder how many of those unemployed are losing their homes because even in the short-term they aren't able to pay their mortgages on their unemployment benefits. I think we should definitely look at reducing the length of time someone is able to receive benefits, because there are those out there taking advantage of the system, but how about a 'graduated' payment system whereby recipients get a much larger amount initially (closer to their own incomes perhaps) that is reduced each month until the benefits exhaust. I think everyone would benefit from this - it is a real help to those who are not professionally unemployed and will be a kick in the pants for those that become complacent and just sit around waiting for the check to show up. Hell, back in the day people had to actually get out an LOOK for work - now it's done in the comfort of your home sitting in front of the computer between soap operas.
Someone close to me is getting ready to lose his home because he cannot meet his mortgage - he's only been unemployed for a few months but what he gets isn't even close to meeting his daily living expenses. It's really sad to see this for someone who has worked VERY hard his entire life, but due to the construction downturn (those shovel ready jobs, schools, etc...

) there wasn't another project for him after his last one finished. We should be taking care of THESE people first - the ones who have actually contributed to our society. As a vietnam war vet, little league coach, church deacon, and loving family man, he deserves the benefits that should be coming his way. Unfortunately those benefits are being diverted to things like the 'dream act' - now you tell me, where are the fucked up principals???
