Fact Finder wrote:Earth may be headed into a mini Ice Age within a decade

Physicists say sunspot cycle is 'going into hibernation'

What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening, as heavyweight US solar physicists announce that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth – far from facing a global warming problem – is actually headed into a mini Ice Age.

The announcement made on 14 June (18:00 UK time) comes from scientists at the US National Solar Observatory (NSO) and US Air Force Research Laboratory. Three different analyses of the Sun's recent behaviour all indicate that a period of unusually low solar activity may be about to begin.

The Sun normally follows an 11-year cycle of activity. The current cycle, Cycle 24, is now supposed to be ramping up towards maximum strength. Increased numbers of sunspots and other indications ought to be happening: but in fact results so far are most disappointing. Scientists at the NSO now suspect, based on data showing decades-long trends leading to this point, that Cycle 25 may not happen at all.

This could have major implications for the Earth's climate. According to a statement issued by the NSO, announcing the research:

An immediate question is whether this slowdown presages a second Maunder Minimum, a 70-year period with virtually no sunspots [which occurred] during 1645-1715.

As NASA notes:

Early records of sunspots indicate that the Sun went through a period of inactivity in the late 17th century. Very few sunspots were seen on the Sun from about 1645 to 1715. Although the observations were not as extensive as in later years, the Sun was in fact well observed during this time and this lack of sunspots is well documented. This period of solar inactivity also corresponds to a climatic period called the "Little Ice Age" when rivers that are normally ice-free froze and snow fields remained year-round at lower altitudes. There is evidence that the Sun has had similar periods of inactivity in the more distant past.

During the Maunder Minimum and for periods either side of it, many European rivers which are ice-free today – including the Thames – routinely froze over, allowing ice skating and even for armies to march across them in some cases.

"This is highly unusual and unexpected," says Dr Frank Hill of the NSO. "But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation."

According to the collective wisdom of the NSO, another Maunder Minimum may very well be on the cards.

"If we are right," summarises Hill, "this could be the last solar maximum we'll see for a few decades. That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth's climate."

The big consequences of a major solar calm spell, however, would be climatic. The next few generations of humanity might not find themselves trying to cope with global warming but rather with a significant cooling. This could overturn decades of received wisdom on such things as CO2 emissions, and lead to radical shifts in government policy worldwide.

all i can tell you is if the climate is getting warmer, then why change the name? the entire "global warming" crisis panders to those who have terminal ADD and those who want to create a "green" business model to make money off of.

if you keep changing the name of what you consider to be so bad, then it really tells me you don't know what it is.

In all fairness, "global warming" was a moniker used by the media, but never by mainstream, peer-reviewed climatologists.

The notion that the data was manipulated in any way has been thoroughly debunked beyond refute. It's a right wing propagandist lie. I've provided several links to that effect in the past few weeks.

all i know is if the global warming crowd was around when the continents started shifting, they'd say man was at fault because of their silly tribal dances jacking with the plates and start demanding we drill iron rods 30 miles down to keep it from happening.

The continents have always moved, and continues to do so; it's called continental drift. It's called global warming because of the earth's rise in temperature. It's the media that is making it out to be that the scientists are really split on this, but they're not; the consensus is that the rise in temperature comes form human made emission of green gases (deforestation and burning of fossil fuel). Some of it can be attribute to solar activity, sure, but it's undeniable that it's mostly man made.

Increase in sea temperature (water's density depends on its temperature) and deglacing, will be catastrophic for cities like London or for the millions of people living in shore communities in Asia and Africa.

So for next time: stop spreading nonsensical jibberjabber and get your facts straight.

It's projected to have risen 30 cm (around 12 inches) by 2050. The mean rate is 1.8 mm per year. Myrtle beach is according to wikipedia 8 m over sea level. So you need at least a required rise of 8000 mm - and that'll take 4444 years with the current projections. You need to vacate in 6455 - so you can rock out with your cock out a while longer. However, most of New Orleans will be flooded in a matter of centuries, the same will London. The Maldives will be gone by 2100.

The problem is for many that this don't seem like much; 1,8 mm. When in fact, it's a fucking shitload. Not to mention that this great increase in water temperature will have a profound effect on water life. When the temperature changes, so does the density, and as an effect movement of the water too. Since the earth's is not in equilibrium, absorbing more than it is emitting, in turn warms the atmosphere. Most of it which is stored in the sea, because of its great heat absorbing capacity. When the equilibrium is reached, the evaporation of water will increase, in turn increasing the density of the atmosphere, which will result in increased overall temperature.

You simply don't mess with the sea.

There's overwhelming evidence to the fact that it's human made and very, very serious. Maybe not for your generation, mine or the next ones, but it's coming. This is somewhat reminiscent of the evolutionary debate in the states. There's also in that case, overwhelming evidence for it - but it's still not approved by the general public. But that really doesn't matter.

It's not based on hunches or a masterplan by Toyota to sell Prius', but years of data collected and calculated on by physicists and geologists. The people in the west will manage, but most Asians and Africans just don't have the kind of money to buy a boat and sail away.

Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.

The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.

There will be always a small part of the scientific community which believes different from the majority, but again; the consensus is simply overwhelming. Believe what you want, seriously.

You still have scientists that believe the earth is 6000 years old - but them believing it doesn't make it right. Get it?

Nice deflection...No one said the scientists themselves receive the trillions, dimwit. All that money goes to fund studies, projects, and the many organizations (many of which are corrupt) that work those studies and projects. So while the scientists doing the actual legwork may not be getting independently wealthy from those funds, the projects they work on do in a major way. Al Gore has basically enriched himself at the expense of the "scientific world" and many of the world's governments that he's duped in to believing faux-science.

BTW...Scientists do not earn piss-poor wages. There are scientists I know who don't bring in a ton of bank but they aren't hurting for it, either.
