A person's budget:

• Annual income: $21,700
• Money spent: $38,200
• New debt on the credit card: $16,500
• Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
• Total budget cuts: $385

Think he/she is headed toward bankruptcy?

Now add 8 zeros to those numbers.

Welcome to the USA!! Yeah, the above really looks like a "revenue" problem and not a spending problem.

It's interesting to me that Boner said the GOP got "more than 80% of what they wanted" in the bill - that, in other words, the deficit plan (as is the commonly held thought) was a Republican rout - and that, in the end, his inability to sell the broader, $4 trillion package he agreed to with President Gumby, led to the credit rating reduction. It's fascinating to the point of absurdity how the Tea Baggers fail to acknowledge this, or that without an increase in revenue, there's no way out.

Obama's very fortunate as a very weak candidate that the GOP field is so weak. Otherwise, you could already concede 2012 to the right.

Agreed. Of all the terrible Republican ideas Democrats have let themselves get bullied into advocating over the years, this was one of the worst.

But, the problem remains...what to do with all the people (who otherwise would have had basic coverage of some kind) who come into the ER, and the taxpayer winds up footing the bill? That was the idea behind the mandate, and it was pretty conservative to begin with. This is why there needs to be a single payor OPTION.

S&P BLAMES THE GOP FOR THEIR U.S. CREDIT DOWNGRADE!

Put this in your corn cob pipes and smoke it. There is NO WAY around this one. S&P lowered our credit rating - something that could potentially jeopardize the global economy and lead to another international recession - entirely because the Tea Party stood in the way of the Obama-Bohner agreement that would have ended the Bush tax cuts and increased revenue.

You can't pretty this one up, GOP. It's squarely on your shoulders. 110%.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/05/national/main20088952.shtml

Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012, remain in place. We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.

It continues:

The outlook on the long-term rating is negative. As our downside alternate fiscal scenario illustrates, a higher public debt trajectory than we currently assume could lead us to lower the long-term rating again. On the other hand, as our upside scenario highlights, if the recommendations of the Congressional Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction--independently or coupled with other initiatives, such as the lapsing of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for high earners (my emphasis)--lead to fiscal consolidation measures beyond the minimum mandated, and we believe they are likely to slow the deterioration of the government's debt dynamics, the long-term rating could stabilize at 'AA+'.

The fact remains that the deficit is there because we spend more than we bring in. That is not a revenue problem and has nothing to do with revenue. If Standard and Poors wants to downgrade us based on the fact that the right didn't want to unfairly discriminate against people that are higher income earners than others in this country, that's their right. But the problem stems from reckless spending and the answer can't just always fucking be "Tax them rich motherfuckers more!!!" That attitude and the dolts that parrot that bullshit are simply envious. I have no more money than the average Joe, probably far less, but I don't want anyone paying more or less in taxes than me. Tax each earned dollar the same, let's encourage success upward and end the dependent, slavish lifestyle that is welfare and entitlements.

Your example above is silly, Dan. It just makes no sense. S&P are stating why the downgrade was made, but that doesn't mean it's the root or cause of the problem/dilemma. The taxes on higher income earners in this country are unequal, unfair and simply un-American. When we break it down and look at it, this country runs on their taxes, and only because of their taxes. Let's give them a fucking break and for once, just once, take away some of the free shit that clingers-on of this country have come to expect. Tax everyone the same, figure out those numbers, appropriate an amount that will pay the deficit down in X amount of years (probably 10-15 years) and use the rest of the leftover money, and only the leftover money (not a cent more), to fund the remaining programs. This isn't rocket science, man.

You get this bent when S&P lowers the US from AAA to AA+... which is like going from a Ferrari to a Maseratti...

Yet the Chinese Dagong Global Credit Rating Company:

  1. Lowered the United States to A+ ... LAST NOVEMBER, after the U.S. Federal Reserve decided to continue loosening its monetary policy, AND
  2. Just announced a FURTHER DOWNGRADE to A, for the VERY SAME REASONS the S&P downgraded the US...

...and they did their second downgrade BEFORE the recent the S&P announcement.. who BTW need to shore up their credibility with their European customers... this is about the S&P saving face and doing business overseas...

The S&P owns ZERO US debt.. how much do the Chinese own? The Chinese downgrade increases the likelihood it becomes more expensive for the US to borrow from it's largest creditor..... the Chinese.. and can easily translate into economic slowdown MUCH faster than any bullshit the S&P does... WHY? Foreign buyers of US debt are going to pay way more attention to the Chinese downgrade the the S&P one.... because the Chinese have way more to lose by making it harder for the US to borrow... yet they STILL downgraded...

Why weren't you howling last year?

Meh. Anyway, politicians are all assholes.

Coming to Charlotte this year? Which shows are you catching?

Anyway, it's standard-issue now for everyone to blame everyone else.

Where was YOUR party when Bush was spending like a drunken sorority chick with her CEO daddy's credit card?

No shows toward Charlotte this year, but I sure wish I could make it out that way! Hey, I hammered Bush and hated his reckless spending. He was far too entitlement happy for my tastes. He gave minorities far more than even Clinton did and was still labeled a racist. But I can, at the very least, admire the compassion in that, because it sure as fuck didn't get him any votes. The guy was guided by principles, for better or worse, and didn't give a fuck about polls.

He also spent far more money in Africa than any other President, something Bono gave him a lot of credit for. Personally, I think the guy spent far too much not only on that but domestically also. The prescription drug fiasco being the worst.
