Remember Gene's sports team analogy...the Green Bay Packers will always be the Green Bay Packers no matter who's under the helmets.

Interesting notion.

Yes and no. There's a built-in assumption that sports teams are going to have different members at some point in time, but not so much with music. Gene really shit his pants with that comment. Try commemorating the Cowboys back-to-back Super Bowl winning teams by running out the 2010 Cowboys during haftime and see how his "no matter who's under the helmets" comment goes over with the folks in Dallas. He's comparing apples and oranges, really.

Your debating skills are tremendous. Where the hell are you now days? Last I heard was near KC?

I'm about 40 miles north of Kansas City, MO. I love it out here, Rick. :) Ironically, Journey is playing here Wednesday night and it just happens to be my 40th birthday. We have ILAA. Second time I've ever been voluntarily raped. The first was also with ILAA. lol

Jesus, man, you're in Nebraska.

Have fun at the show, if your asshole heals enough.

I totally agree w/GS ...folks who love their sports teams love
them no matter whose head the helmet sits on. Sure they
may prefer one era to another, but true fans of the music
will live on... 'tis a great analogy!!

No it really isn't.

Gene Simmons is justifying all these aging rock stars finding karaoke replacements so they can continue cashing in. The American Idolization of rock is the worst thing that has ever happened to classic rock/melodicrock. I have nothing against tribute bands whatsoever as long as I'm paying $10 bucks to see them at a local bar. I also have nothing against having a new FRONTMAN - meaning not just a parrot like Tommy DeCarlo creepily imitating Brad Delp's vocals with both hands down his pants doing God knows what? (maybe fastening his tool belt?)

For years I have been making fun of my parents' bands like The Platters touring with no original members. Well the joke is on me now isn't it?

These bands ABSOLUTELY have the right to do what they want. I'm not saying that at all. I just fucking hate it. I listen to the legacy bands of my childhood less and less these days.

Ya, count me in as viewing the sports analogy as not only inapposite, but also painfully off the mark.

Right, you don't rewatch the same Peyton Manning pass over and over again from a moment in time like you would listen to Steve Perry sing Winds of March.

In sports, each game is different and no single play is ingrained in your head for the rest of your life like a recorded song.

Technically, he doesn't give a shit about anyone but Kiss...he said that to justify putting different people in Peter & Ace makeup.

I hate American Idol too.

But consider this: if large amounts of people are still willing to pay money to go see classic bands even with new singers, why would the bands not do it? Why leave money on the table? Like you said, tribute bands are going to pop up anyway. If a tribute band can do it, why can't the real band replace a key member and keep going? If it's all about the music and all about the songs, and people don't seem to mind a different person singing them as long as they are sung how they remember, what's the problem?

The problem is my own personal hatred of it which I'm just as entitled to as these bands are to do as they wish with their careers.

But one does continue watching the Colts, if they're a fan ...just
like one continues going to Journey shows without Perry.

As I stated earlier, I'm not interested in KISS without the main
players, but it is a fabulous way to keep KISS alive for future
generations. SOMEONE is going to be covering KISS ...
If I had spent my life nurturing and building a successful business,
why would I not be the one to prosper from it?!

You are using heart~strings ...this is business!!

Marc Martel on Ellen last week - much better indication of what he can do than the YT audition. Nice guy too:

Brian May should be ashamed of himself. Remember this quote:

Option 2: They go out on tour with a 'replacement' for the legendary singer - someone who looks and sounds like Steve Perry; in this case they find themselves in a stale situation, where they are stuck in the past. I was always against this in our case - I could not stand being a fossil, going out there and effectively saying, "We can't improve on what is past - we have nothing more to say".

Really sad when the new discoveries are clones who croon on shows like Ellen.

I'm too lazy to research this myself, but I was thinking isn't this Extravaganza Roger Taylor's brainchild? Is Brian May actually involved in this thing?

This Martel guy is NOWHERE close to Mercury. He's about as Freddie as Hugo is Steve Perry.

BTW, how lame is that "Ooooohhh this is the guitar solo" adlib he tries to put in? Terrible.

I haven't seen much at all about Brian's involvement with this contest - it's all Roger. And I don't think the intention is to find a replacement singer - it's everyone on the Internet that's screaming for Marc Martel to be the new lead singer. If they want to put on a show with different players showcasing Queen's music, that's one thing - starting up again with another replacement singer is another.

Theyre not trying to find a replacement singer. This is to create a tribute show to queen. Completely different than Journey. or is it ? :?

Marc Martel's round 2 audition:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qmFEh5z ... re=related

His brother David is in the competition also:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSD9PeMZ ... re=related

(like Marc, a talented singer and musician with his own music/band, before anyone jumps in with the usual crap comments)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TPTNxQdsXQ

They sure look alike

The guy singing Queen is Marc Martel and plays piano, too. I saw him months ago on Ellen,I think. He has several songs on YouTube.. I hope he didn't sign with Ellen's record company. I still prefer Adam Lambert.
