The Obama administration is engulfed in a full-blown foreign policy crisis just two months before the presidential election with the two campaigns trading angry accusations over events in Libya, Egypt and Israel.
Footage of the body of Christopher Stevens, United States ambassador to Libya, slung over the back of a protester, was reminiscent of the 1993 'Black Hawk Down' incident in Somalia in 1993 when militia fighters lynched American aircrew in the streets of Mogadishu.
President Barack Obama's staff will also be mindful that a shadow was cast over Jimmy Carter's presidency by the Iranian hostage crisis after the US embassy in Tehran was stormed by Islamist extremists following the Iranian revolution.
A year after the 52 Americans were taken hostage, Carter lost the 1980 election. The hostages were released just as President Ronald Reagan, who defeated Carter, was sworn in.

here we go.
Comparing this to the hostage situation in 1980 ?

Well, if the shoe fits and all that. O has one upped Carter. Carter gave one country to the Islamist nutbags, O gave them two.
What a bunch of bullshit.
The entire W mid-East policy was to bring 'democray' to the middle east and use Iraq as an example...and you Republicans and conservatives ate it up.
What the fuck do you think is going to happen when a population of Muslims that has been kept under the thumb of a dictator for decades votes in a democratic election? Morons.
And, hypocrites. What was a good thing for W to do in Iraq is now somehow flipped into a demonic policy. You were OK with bringing democracy to Iraq, but not Egypt and Libya?
It's obvious for anybody paying attention that your opinion is swayed by what party is in the WH.
the people of Libya and Egypt wanted democracy. Any American President, regardless of party, would have supported that effort. We were not in the wrong to do that...and those that say we were are just playing politics and spinning current events to their advantage. How cowardly it is to do that and not admit that if any Republican were in charge, he'she would do the exact same thing.
Egypt and Libya are dealing with the same radical Muslims that the US did during 9/11...and we are caught in the middle of it as the target to attack. The bottom line is these new governments need to respond...and the US should partner with them in that response. I doubt very much that we have seen the end of it from our side.
And, yes, that film should be universally condemned and those who voice support for it should be asked to shut the fuck up. How ironic that when national security is involved when a Republican is in office, that we are supposed to do and say, and not do or say, whatever the President asks, to the point where critiquing his decisions emboldens our enemies and effects national security. But, when a general makes a cal to a radical Christian to stop supporting a film that has sparked the murder of Americans, it is a violate ion of the Constitution and deserves critique. Grow up....and stop being so partisan.
And, finally, I find it ironic that a party that considers itself so patriotic can be so unpatriotic during the anniversary of 9/11. Nothing posted here seemed to celebrate the day with even the slightest amount of patriotism. You all should be embarrassed. A friend of mine posted this to Facebook, and I find it to be exactly what 9/11 should be remember for:
"Sure I remember the confusion, the sadness, the uncertainty - the terror. But what I remember most, out of anything, was the overwhelming sense of community and kindness in the days after. Strangers opened doors for one another, smiled at each other in the street, went out of their way to help anyone in the slightest need. Flags were everywhere. The Pledge of Allegiance and Star Spangled Banner took on a whole new significance. That's what I choose to remember. An event as horrible and tragic as 9/11 resulted in an overwhelming tide of good."
